It's true that with a quantum computer you could easily break today's implementation of encryption but in theory quantum encryption will be unbreakable, even by other quantum computers, because of the nature of state in quantum mechanics. Although surely after the first quantum VPN it will only take a century or so to create some radically new type of computing that will break it. That is the nature of technology. Thank goodness for job security.
I was laid off from Compaq, along with my entire team, when the word of the HP / Compaq merger came out and I had to do a bunch of short-term jobs while being mostly unemployed for nearly a year. I took a 6 month contract in San Antonio that I had to relocate for, at my own expense, and they just offered me to go full time making nearly $55K/year less than what I was making at my contract rate so I had to decline. I heard through full time employees that they stated in an all hands meeting that they were going to try and pick up contractors at rock bottom prices due to the state of the IT market. They have extended my contract, open ended, but I expect to get a call any day.
Lucky for me I used the money from the 7 months I have been on this contract to become debt free so it opens up my options such as going back to school and pursuing a masters. Heck I might stay in school for as long as it takes for the market to improve.
I have a ton of great experience but there are a lot of people looking for jobs so job searching is very competitive. I suggest if you have a job try hanging on to it. If you want to go the military route then go Air Force that way you won't see combat. I might look at this as an option but am too old for enlistment.
Please feel free to take a look at my resume at http://www.nickpowers.info (html, MS Word, and text versions available there) and pass it along to anyone you think might be interested. I am willing to relocate anywhere for the right position.
If I remember in Aliens the automated sentries had dual 50 caliber guns mounted on them. I've always wanted a few of these along with neet little signs showing a guy being shot a killed because you never know if the person wandering onto your property can read. *lol*
This makes sense because they are loosing such market share in their dial up business splitting their company up makes it easier to keep the profitable entities alive while looking for somewhere to dump the unprofitable ones.
I use an Apple bluetooth keyboard on my Mac and love it. I don't use their mouse as it is still a one button jobby. Instead I use a non bluetooth optical wireless logitech mouse. When will apple learn that one button isn't enough. Their operating system allready supports a 3 button mouse with a scroll wheel.. duh!
So, now we have a President / Commander in Chief during wartime. He has a Republican House and Senate and does not have to worry about pleasing the American people because he cannot run again.
If I were George W Bush I would activate ALL military reservists, enact the draft, and send mass troops to Iraq to disarm their entire nation and impose martial law. Oh, and by the way build the Marine base right over there. Set the price of oil about $5 a barrel and start loading up the tankers.
I doubt he will be SO harsh, there is a reason I am not a presidential candidate. But, I wouldn't be surprised if the gloves come off and he actually wields the force required to conquer Iraq.
They should FIRE you and HIRE someone that has the proper skills. There are so many unemployed people out there just waiting for a job like yours. Heck they could most likely hire in someone for less than you are being paid. I have seen way too many people jump on the IT BOOM era with MCSE in hand screaming Yahoooo all the way. Problem is many of those people that truly need to be displaced into another industry have miraculously hung onto their jobs taking away from the people that have real skills. If you have been in IT for 5 years and all you know is Microsoft Windows you might think of working in the fast food industry or retail sales. I hear Home Depot is hiring. Any Linux Administrator could do your MS Windows Admin job with one hand tied behind his back. I got MCSE certified in 3 days and I didn't know any more about windows when I went in than after I came out. I learned how use a keyboard with DOS and a mouse with win 3.1 and those are truely the only skills you need to be a MS Windows Admin.
If I need to bang out a script I use bash. If I need to write a simple cgi I use perl. If I am writing a full program then it is going to be writting in some variation of C (C,C++,Objective-C,etc). Java is OK for stuff on web pages but for that stuff I would prefer Macromedia flash.
Flame me if you want but I don't consider Java a real language. Esp since MS corupted it.
Compact Flash is already IDE. It's just that the pinouts are different. You can buy an adapter for ~ $20. The previous poster was correct about the maximum number of writes though. I have a system that I use compact flash to boot off of in RO mode. My system boots fast and I don't write to the disk.
A child is born with a birth defect that makes it's eyes useless. If an eye transplant could be done right away then the child could have normal vision. If the same child got an eye transplant at say age 10 then it would still be blind for life. This is because the region of the brain that processes sight would have not developed. After a certain point you loose the ability to learn how to process the information.

Truely, when in Wifi range I shouldn't have to pay for voice minutes. Instead it should use VOIP like Vonage softphone. I think that is why it has taken so long for a Pocket PC Phone to come out with built in WiFi or even WiFi capable slots because they know there will be VOIP apps developed for it thus reducing minute usage. Also, I hope that AT&T adopts this as I am not a big T-Mobile fan.
Several companies paid up when they were told that they had to pay SCO licensing fees if they were using Linux. Was SCO in violation of the GPL when the companies paid? Do the companies get their money back? What are the penalties of violating the GPL license?
As a person working in the network security arena for nearly 15 years the problem is divulging your internal topology. Now this might not bother you at home for corporations that deal with real data (see $$$) are very concerned about this.
I have worked with the air fortress and it encrypts at the layer 2 level so no network topology can be determined.
Very nice but it would be even better is it didn't require a client or that the client was ubiquitous with the driver.
When you get to the core of windows you are still talking about MS DOS. And for all of you that will say that the MS DOS has been phased out I would argue that MS DOS is still the primary CLI for windows.
If I were bill gates I would pull and old trick out of the bag and copy a successful move that apple has made. That trick would be to copy what apple has done with BSD.
MS could make BSD the main operating system and make windows the GUI. Some people will say Linux but the reason Linux was not Apple's choice is because of it's license. The BSD license is so much more commercial friendly.
They could take Apache and make include a ton of proprietary code that makes it work just like IIS but more secure for just one example. This could produce one of the most powerful Unix O/S in the world.

I think a great movie, if not series, would be all about the Borg. How the first nanobytes took control of the first specieis (species 001) and how the collective was created. No Federeation, no Vulcans, etc.. just BORG.
I belive that if it was not for MS illegal business practices we would all be running java on netscape and have software that we can not even dream of.
MS philosophy is to to compete with products that you can defeat. Out of the rest buy those that will sell. And for the remaining destroy them by corupting their technology.
MS stinks and I only use it when I HAVE to (work, etc).

The GPL license is so restrictive to what you can and cannot do as opposed to the BSD license that says here do what you will.
Though, I imagine it will be some NEW sun open source license that makes it so you can contribute all you want but you cannot take anything from it.

I quote from the article:
"This was thoroughly discouraging; no out-of-the-box NVIDIA support for the largest (or at least second largest) 64-bit operating system."
The Power Mac G5 is 64-bit and ships with NVIDIA cards. This would make Mac OS X the largest 64-bit operating system.
I know this review was on AMD but at least qualify a statement when it is so alarmingly wrong.
