  1. Re:computer? on Computer Software to Predict the Unpredictable · · Score: 1

What worries me most is that people seem to lose their common sense when it comes to computers. I can just imagine a scenario where the human intelligence gathering pointing to an event is dismissed because the "computer" didn't predict it.

  2. Re:computer? on Computer Software to Predict the Unpredictable · · Score: 1

When I read stuff like this it always amazes me that people actually think such things can be predicted for any degree of usefulness. Pick up a book on chaos theory and complex systems and you will see that for large interconnected systems a small change in the starting conditions results in a completely different result. No computer could have predicted 9/11 and yet it has had a massive change in how the world works - same thing if some crazy tomorrow assassinates the president.

Even if we assume these random events not to occur you would need *all* the data to get a result approaching reality.

You cant pretend like you need massive infrastructure to get a legit music market to develop - this band did exactly what the computer community wanted and unfortunately the doubters where right - more people downloaded it from illegal sources then pay the measly minimum of $1 (or pound I forget which) to get it legally.

The problem in my opinion is that people fail to understand there are people who download not because they are unwilling to pay for stuff they want but because they only slightly want what they download - not enough to pay for it if that was the only way to obtain it. Hence if tomorrow all the illegal sources where silenced - what we would see is not so much of a rise in sales as a drop in total consumption of a product (illegal + legal).

Actually chief - what happened was that the surge detector got wanged by the condensation and so sent a "oh noes switch off now" to all three computers. Hence why the bypass cable worked. The problem in the design was that there was a way to kill all three at once which should have been impossible.

The UN is not not a coherent entity. So the UN doesn't want anything - its member states do. In this case China is holding up proceedings for tougher action whereas the US is pushing for more action. However given that UN resolutions have no power to bind nations to do its will all that can happen is the issuing of a statement or sanctions (again only if all relevant states actively participate in them). When the UN was set up it was filled with idealistic people and if the UN had real power then something might have become of it - but by now most good people within the UN would have been dissolutioned by their impotence to actually make the world a better place.
