    1) I don't think he was joking. If the man hadn't been black he wouldn't be dead.

(aaargh)I'm not talking about the perpetrators or motivations in this case, just the act itself. Just because they killed him because he was black does not make it more or less of a murder. What if James Byrd had been a white man who was murdered for stealing the killers' car? Would the fact that he was not of a different racial makeup somehow make his murder less of a crime? It shouldn't.

    2) There is a long history in the US of killing minority group members - especially blacks. In many parts of the country it was not even considered to be a crime (at least it wasn't prosecuted). The "hate-crime" laws send a message that it is illegal and that we, as a society, are going to make a special effort of prosecuting the perpetrators. In short, it is a break with some rather vile traditional values.

I agree with the first part. There is a long history of this type of behavior, and yes, it is pretty reprehensible. However, the second part is where I beg to differ. We have plenty of existing laws that can be enforced more effectively to achieve the same effect. There is no need to enact more legislation just to satisfy the PC crowd. And that, at its root, is all that "hate-crime" legislation is.

The flipside to that is that with all the information floating around on the 'net these days, the really smart kids won't even *need* a kit to be able to do the experiments. They can just get the chemicals and do it themselves (albeit, probably way more dangerously than with a kit).

  12. Re:Have "hate-crimes" laws ever helped anyone? on House OKs Life Sentences For Hackers · · Score: 1

Funny. My point is, does the act itself become more of a crime because the perpetrators and the victim don't share the same skin color? I think not. Murder is murder is murder, no matter who commits it or who is the victim, and it should be dealt with accordingly.

  13. Have "hate-crimes" laws ever helped anyone? on House OKs Life Sentences For Hackers · · Score: 1

Would James Byrd be any less dead if he were not black? Would James Byrd be any less dead if his killers were not white?

The answer to both of these questions is no. He would still be dead, and the crime that was committed on him would be equally as heinous.

We don't need a "hate crimes" law that will do nothing but give lawyers, activists, and politicians who harbor agendas an excuse to declare that some [murders|assaults|whatever] are more important than other [murders|assaults|whatever].

Wal-Mart workers make an average of $3 per hour less than union supermarket jobs, $2 per hour less than all supermarket jobs, and $1 per hour less than the average retail wage...

So, if the supermarket (or whatever) pays better, why don't they quit their Wal-Mart jobs and go work in the supermarket? I mean, seriously, this was my whole point in the first place: that Wal-Mart is not *forcing* these people to work there. They do it by choice.

...my real problem is that Americans as a whole since the Reagan era seemed to have tossed their social consciousness out the window...

I'm not even going to get into the whole "Blame Reagan" mantra. It's old, tired and overdone, as far as I'm concerned. What are you defining as "social consciousness", anyway? It's usually a nice, pretty, PC-sanitized way of saying "socialism". Correct me if I'm wrong here.

America is about to experience another harsh lesson in economic reality...

I suppose this "harsh economic reality" will be the "lesson we learn" for all the "irresponsibility", "greed", and "consumerism" committed by the "rich white suburbans" who don't "care about the future" of (here's the old standby, are you ready?) "our children".

I just love buzzwords, don't you? They make great soundbites on the evening news, and make people like [Tom Daschle|Al Gore|Hillary Clinton|Just about any Democrat, take your pick]'s job easy.

Yes, I'm being sarcastic here, but still, how far off the mark am I, really? It's like these people have a script they pass around and read from.

And finally its now becoming painfully obvious to all that the boom years of the 90s were fueled by the irrational exuberance of foolish consumer spending habits...

Well, yes, people did do this, but just how is that Wal-Mart's fault? Don't give me a line of "they enabled this behavior" crap, either. Boom or no, Wal-Mart would have been Wal-Mart. It's not the fault of you, me, or Wal-Mart that these people don't know how to manage their finances.

I guess that iconization and demonization ("SUVs": see "buzzwords" above) are more convenient tactics for the left, though.

Indeed Wal-Mart is now number #1 on the Fortune 500 and is the largest private employer in the U.S. providing over one million low paying service jobs. 5 of the 10 richest people in the world are heirs of Sam Walton. S. Robson Walton, with an estimated new worth more than $65 billion, surpassed Bill Gates in 2001 as the richest man in the world.

So, what's your point? Did someone put a gun to the holders of these "low paying service jobs", as you put it, and force them to work at Wal-Mart? No. As for the people who *do* work there, if the job is so horrible, well, there's nothing stopping them from quitting, is there?

What makes you think that a locally-owned shop would be willing to pay workers more than Wal-Mart does?

Or is your real problem with Wal-Mart the fact that Robson Walton is rich, and it's just not fair?

Yeah, maybe this is a troll, but so be it. I always get a kick out of the oh-so-PC "[America|corporations|capitalism|globalism] is [evil|racist|unfair|killing our precious mother earth]" crowd.
