I do have to say though that this isn't just our community who does this. My brother and I were forced out of business b/c our "customers" wouldn't pay up either and we had no recourse that we could afford at that point to collect from them, contracts or no contracts. It costs money to sue in Canada.

I'll just say this about my experience: never take on accountants and real estate companies as clients they are the worst.

My sympathies to Chris. I've been there. It sucks, especially when your own community has pulled the shaft on you. If that's what you like doing though Chris take what you've learned and start again. This time though screen you customers and get payment in advance. If they don't pay you take their site off line within a couple days of their payment being overdue. You have to play tough. Put it in the contract. I'd also say charge a late fee on payments, or if they continue not to pay have a clause where you can confiscate their stuff. You want to be nice but you have to stick up for yourself too.

I'd follow the admonishment of one of the other posters. Post a list of the dead-beats on the web for all to see. I'd like to know who to throw the rocks at.

Whenever there is a paradigm shift in technology (i.e. technological revolution) there are people that are unable, for whatever the circumstances, to adapt. Any time there exists something that offers an advantage to people it will always create a disparity between people who can adapt to it and those who can't; and that disparity will widen and the lines will constantly be redrawn.

It's happened before (industrial revolution) and it will continue to happen. It's a natural process and no matter how much we want to remove the disparity, you can't save everyone.

    Unfortunatly you are right.

I come from a sales background dealing with the
average "joe user." (I worked sales while getting
my comp-sci degree). The only way to successfully
make a sale and compete against you competitors is
    to

    1) Find out the persons "needs" (read *wants*)
    2) Tie down the customer to those "needs" that
map to a feature set in your product. Then
hammer on the features that are unique to your
    product over the competition.
    3) Explain each feature, the benefit of it to the
customer, and then tie down (i.e. get him to
agree with you) and then close.

    It goes like this.

    Qualify,
    Feature -> Advantage -> Benefit -> TieDown
    Feature -> Advantage -> Benefit -> TieDown
    Feature -> Advantage -> Benefit -> TieDown

    .....
    close
    close
    close
    (i.e. close the sale)

In the mainstream world of computing (joe user),
it's features that sell. The feature of stability
is hard to sell to the average user b/c they
    a) expect it to be stable (and if you try to
push this too much they'll lose confidence in
you and your product and go somewhere else
where your competitor will tell them all
their products are stable and get the sale).
    b) It's not glamorous.

The "feature" of not being bloated doesn't sell
because it has much less "features" compared to
the "bloated software" (which normal people
really care very little about until they have
to upgrade). The software industry read *MS* has
done a good job of ingraining people with the
mentality that they NEED the latest bloat.

High tech, enterprise companies are different
b/c they have IT staff. But small businesses are
the same as joe user b/c usually the suits are
    dumber than stumps.

Oh, of coure, I forgot. All us white middle class
folk are part of a conspiracy to oppress everyone

do with race or class (I'm 1/2 chinese myself).
Don't peg people with race or class labels.
Only the small minded do that. I'm not saying
that there aren't minority groups and that they
don't get oppressed sure they do. BUT, you can't
define a "minority" group by race and class

type of thinking that labels and classifys others
and then pre-judges them based on YOUR arbitrary
classifications is EXACTLY like that of those other
small minded bigots who I image, and you insinuate,
persecuted and oppressed you. We need to realise
that people are people no matter where you go.
We all have the same wants and needs, hopes and

black, hispanic, asian, whatever. Judge people
on the merit of WHO THEY ARE, not where they
come from, what they look like or how much money
    they make.

The pity is that she has failed to realise that
she has become just like those "racist bigots"
that she hates so much. Poisoning yourself with
bitterness will not make you a better person.
I sympathise but we all have issues. Ever had to
deal with the extreme loneliness of being from
a bi-racial family? (man I hate using this
terminology, but it's probably the only thing
you'll understand). You're of two different
cultures but belong to none, not accepted by
either side. Until you stop looking at everything
through the glasses of race and start drawing
on the strength that your unique background
gives you. Same thing for anyone from a single
minority. But you can't get to that point in
your personal growth without letting go of the
bitterness, hate and frustration that you've
accumulated. It starts with forgivness. Sounds
    cheesy but it's true.

  21. This goes ties in with the Colorado Shootings on Students Opting Away from high-tech Degrees? · · Score: 1

It was interesting to see in the article how the number of high-tech degrees has fallen since 1990. You can directly link that with the situation in schools that brought about the Colorado Shootings, and the treatment of geeks in society. In North American culture being athletically skilled is more important that being scientifically skilled. Most people especially middle and low class families (the men in them particularly), go to sports bars, games, sit at home watching ESPN with a "Bud" (I think "Bud" is popular b/c it's one syllable). Fathers are proudest when their sons make the football team. We see this behaviour reinforced through TV, Media, and within families and schools. It's cool the be the captain of the football team. And if you are you chances of getting the best looking girl(s) in school are the highest.(I sense a warped evolution, natural selection impact here). If you are a geek, nerd, whatever your intelligence is not paraded or reinforced. It's not cool and it's not a social focus. Further, geeks and nerds have been the center of ridicule in the media for a long time. Just look at the show Family Matters. The main character Steve Earkle is very smart but protrayed in a fasicious manner, always the brunt of jokes, always the problem, always the looser.

Hmm. I wonder why kids aren't flocking to the sciences.

However, this is not true of other cultures. Take a look at the Chinese (which I am) or East Indian cultures (both of which are not very cool in the US). Their cultures heavily emphasise academic achievement, especially in the sciences. Math, Physics, Computer Science, Medicine, are all fields that are held in high esteem in these societies and cultures. You have more status not less if you choose one of these fields, and less status not more if you are focused on sports. Actually focusing on sports is discouraged. They also encourage going all the way in school, not just high school or a bachelors.

Interesting on how this shows up in the numbers. 45% of all doctoral graduates are foreign. Hmm. Wonder why.

I can't begin to describe the overwhelming emotions of fear, anger, hurt and bitterness that consume me when I think back on them. I learned to harden myself and I pushed all of those emotions down deep. It never affected me and I didn't think it would because, like I told everyone "I don't care what people think about me." After such a long time of keeping that burden pushed down inside of me I thought nothing of it.

However, after reading all of the postings and the hellmouth articles it finally started to hit me. Those emotions finally rose up and I can honestly say I shed a few tears. In post after post I found people I could finally relate to and who were feeling what I was/had felt. Call it geek therapy, or whatever, but it was nice to not feel like an outcast.

The part that hurt the most is that my wife and I don't see eye to eye on this issue. She bought into the media hype and fanatacism and not only tries to justify it but defends it too. So I printed out the two articles and some of the comments and took them home for her to read. I really needed her to understand. First of all I had to almost force her to read it, secondly she got only past the first page and a half and said that that was too much reading for her for one day. I felt like saying "What not enough pictures for you?" She promised to read more of it later, but I doubt that she will. That made me feel even worse.

I guess that's what you get when Mr.Geek marries Ms.Popularity.

Anyone have their familiy not get it or actually turn on you for telling them the truth?
