We assume that democracy, individual freedoms, humanism, and material comfort will make us into ideal people like metal poured into a mold, stamped and assembled by machines. Yet machines do not have personality or the different mental abilities that define human individuals.
Our society judges us not by who we are, but by what roles we play. It rewards not higher behavior but obedience and conformity, and a willingness to respond in Pavlovian twitches to the rewards of money and social prestige. This is the false reality created by our theory; it is what our best thinkers call thin or partial intelligence, which is the ability to focus well on details while being ignorant of the system at large.
This system at large cannot be perceived by attention to details, or even context, but can be analyzed by its design: how the whole fits together so that it functions. To look at civilization on the level of design is to see its actual motivations, behind the facade of smiling faces on television or grand speeches full of positive-sounding words like "freedom" and "progress." When we look at design, we see that by denying our inner world, we have made the external world a cloak for corruption at our core.
Speaking for myself only, I'd like to see Linux get wider adoption but not become some kind of corporate product. Large corporations tend to take grassroots ideas and turn them into the Same Old Thing by applying the same old metrics to them, in short, in doing what corporations do. Remember how blogs used to be an alternative form of media, and now every newspaper is a blog and every blog links to a newspaper? Hint: it's not the guys in front of the screen, but the guys behind the screen that you must pay attention to.

The linksys brand was solid, until their routers started using broadcom chipsets, and immediately began to suck. Millions of people who would have bought linksys if their "computer literate" neighbor had been able to recommend it thus did not buy linksys. Cisco, being smart MBAs with the souls of paperclips, have now decided to use a brand everyone still trusts before they pump up sales and ditch the company to toolish shareholders before retiring to Cuba.
Microsoft will have to offer more than upgraded versions, but it's caught in a conundrum. It can't charge for patches since its near-monopoly means that not offering patches free creates a disaster of socialized cost. But it can't make money just charging for upgrades. Look for support contracts and subscriptions to merge soon!
They are now legally bound to do nothing but offer support for a third-party's software, aka Linux. They will do this, make huge profits, all while claiming the evil FOSS movement forced them to do it. And then curious people will come to FOSS sites and see exchanges like this one... the decorum of angry rioters at a lynching, and all crying for Microsoft's head, as if they did something that much better.
What FOSS should do to steal Microsoft's thunder is to find some way to offer for-profit support for Linux, at a lower rate. That will actually deprive Microsoft of revenue, where the GPLv3 is depriving them of a costly proposition while still enabling them to sell support for something they now don't have to own, and are not negligent when/if it fails.

Just like kids with emo bands, you can compare how witty or clever you were, and socialize (something you couldn't do otherwise) in awkward ways disgused by your agenda. You can wage drama upon all others, screaming out that you need attention, because your lives lack direction or real satisfaction. You are the parasite of the human soul, bloggers.

Increasingly, they're opting to move to the Midwest and become underappreciated, starving artists, instead of putting up with the bullshit of corporate life to develop physics theorems that become the groundwork for the next superweapon.

Once every year, I spend a month (or more, if I'm on contract) in the hills and valleys of the Texas panhandle. There's a phone -- in town. There's electricity, so I could bring gadgets if I wanted to. But i relish these vacations. Just me, my mortality, and my thoughts. Most people would think it would kill them, but it does me a world of good, and I think it would do the same for them.
Since the first of these experiences, I've de-gadgetized. I have a computer, a stereo, and a phone. No TV, no video games, no iPod. My mind is clearer. My budget is saner. And now that I've faced my mortality, I have less of the gaping hole within my soul that is filled with garbage and entertainment. I feel whole again.
Now the only thing left to do is overthrow civilization, and return us to a primal past... albeit one with Ubuntu for those tasks a typewriter or shotgun can't handle!
