Don't see how it matters. As long as the hackers want to play with it, it will be hacked. And I don't know too many hackers who would pass over playing around with new tech.
Depends on the laptop. If the laptop doesn't go in sleep mode properly and you put it in a bag, blocking free air flow, it will probably overheat (depending on how good the cooling is, and how much heat the components generate).
I'm sorry, but that must be the most overrated post in the history of/.
Since when is pure ranting regarded as interesting? This is one man's opinion presented as fact. It's not even close to my perception of what it it like to be Norwegian (or what I consider to be the general opinion on the matter). Not to mention the contradictions (Norwegians are full of themselves, yet they embrace the Jante Law? Oh really?). Norway might be a nation wealthy from the oil in the North Sea, but I don't see how protecting the weaker in our society is supposed to be a bad thing. It has contributed to a high life expectancy, high literacy rate, high PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) per capita, higher standards of education etc. I can honestly say that I do not recognize anything parent says about the country.
As for whether or not Norway is the best country in the world to live in... It might be ranked as #1 according to the Human Development Index, but a variation of 0.08 to the 30th best according to the list, is not enough to draw the conclusion that Norway is best, since there is more to well-being than the HDI. In that respect, I agree with parent, but the rant he presents is not in any way representative to what Norway is really like.
PS: Norway is not a socialist state. I don't know how parent or grandparent have gotten that into their heads, but a high tax rate doesn't automatically mean socialism. Norway still adheres to reasonably free market values. If anything, it would be more accurate to call Norway a social democracy.
The Speed jump was fake?
Next I suppose they'll try to tell us that you can't really fly into the sun with a spaceship the size of Manhattan either. Phooey!
Flawed analogy. It seems simple enough, but driving a car is not comparable to having an HIV infection.
First of all, transportation is not a burden in the same way a lifethreatning infection is.
Second, there is a substantially larger ammount of people driving cars than getting HIV.
Third, a magic gas tank would be beneficial, but not lifesaving in the same way a vaccine for HIV would be.
Personally, I don't think the pharmaceutical companies could ever stand in the way of a vaccine being produced. It's far to important. Somebody out there would produce the vaccine even though it might be in small ammounts, and it would inevitably live on. After that it would only be a matter of time before it would be mass-produced. They could probably limit it's availablity (Like the cheap and less efficient drugs vs. expensive and better drugs being offered to the third world) for profit. And I think nobody in here can afford to be so naive that they think the pharmacos wouldn't do this.
Sure, you need a permit to buy explosives, but you can still make explosives yourself.
Homemade bombs can be quite effective.
Who's to stop someone from blowing up a gas canister?
People with farming backgrounds could be able to get hold of ammonium nitrate, and mixed with fuel oil, that can be enormously devastating. Just ask Terry Nichols.
But hey, I guess as long as these kids SWEAR (Cross their heart and hope to die!) not to use their newfound knowledge about explosives maliciously, it's ok.
Indeed.
There are people who work that don't get insurance.
Therefore, the argument that you pay for "slackers" is flawed, because you pay for yourself and your family as well.
In that respect, it's irrelevant if someone works or not.
Whether someone works or not does not necissarily mean that they will/will not get insurance. So the argument I quoted is flawed as parent points out.
I might not have made myself clear in the first post and it was probably easy to misunderstand. For that, I apologise.
"Don't you feel like you're being ripped off paying for the health care of jobless people when you're busting a gut earning a living?"
As long as there are people who work that are not eligible for health insurance, then the people who don't work are irrelevant. A health system shouldn't ignore large groups of people because they cannot pay for themselves. Aren't homeless people worth saving? Are they somehow worth less than the rest?
The question itself is flawed, because it assumes that the only people who benefit from socialized health care are the people who don't work, when in fact, there is a vast ammount of people who do work, and who have a fairly good income, but who just don't have health insurance. Say for example that you have a wife who's not eligible for health insurance because a previous run-in with a serious ailment. Would you then be opposed to her getting "free" health care, because a hobo down the street would also get free health care?
The fear and scepticism american politicians have towards socialized health care is completely unfounded, and an unfortunate result of this is that millions don't get the help they need and deserve.
GB isn't a communist state and they still make the NHS work for everyone.
There are morons of every age. I've played with people who make the "ICH WILL UNREAL TOURNAMENT SPIELEN!!!" kid seem like a choirboy, and they were well over 11.
The worst is people who use shitty microphones and crappy in-game voice chat and don't realize that they're just bothering everyone. Especially in games where one cannot ignore these morons.
While I agree that for instance sonars are exclusively bad, I must say that whaling in general is relatively misunderstood.
Whaling today is generally targeted towards species with relatively high numbers, and the quotas are usually small. For instance, there's an estimated 110,000 Minke Whales in the North-East Atlantic, but the Norwegian quota is limited to a little over 500 a year.
But whaling of endangered species is of course a major concern. There's appearently still a lot of illegal whale meat on the Japanese market and Russia are hunting Grey Whales which are not as abundant as they should be.
As for the news that another whale was killed, only about 50 Bowhead Whales are killed off the coast of Alaska.
The thing is, the sight of a whale being prepared is quite frightening to some people, and many just cannot bring themselves to think that it is natural. Most hunted whales are big animals, and naturally when they're slaughtered, it gets messy. An interesting note is that it was the whaling industry itself who started to use explosive harpoons in order to kill the whale instantly, despite the fact that a lot of meat is wasted.
1. Pirate Bay, one of the flagships of the anti-copyright movement, makes thousands of euros from advertising on its site, while maintaining its anti-establishment "free music" rhetoric.
I like their inability to differentiate the users of file-sharing services and the people who run it and make money on it. Good stuff!
2. AllOfMP3.com, the well-known Russian web site, has not been licensed by a single IFPI member, has been disowned by right holder groups worldwide and is facing criminal proceedings in Russia.
Well, since they're so concerned about filesharing, perhaps they should stick to argumenting against filesharing. As far as I know, AllOfMP3.com doesn't provide a filesharing service, but is an unlicensed store.
3. Organized criminal gangs and even terrorist groups use the sale of counterfeit CDs to raise revenue and launder money.
If you download music, YOU SUPPORT TERRORISM!
4. Illegal file-sharers dont care whether the copyright-infringing work they distribute is from a major or independent label.
That may be so, but that's just a statement. It says nothing about whether or not it is benificial or negative. Hence, this doesn't debunk anything.
5. Reduced revenues for record companies mean less money available to take a risk on "underground" artists and more inclination to invest in "bankers" like American Idol stars.
Yes, because underground artists are so prominent on major record lables. Give me a break. They'll chose bankers even if they're making tons of cash. The music is irrelevant to them. The business is relevant.
6. ISPs often advertise music as a benefit of signing up to their service, but facilitate the illegal swapping on copyright infringing music on a grand scale.
Yes, and car manufacturers encourage speeding by stating the maximum speed their vehicles are capable of.
7. The anti-copyright movement does not create jobs, exports, tax revenues and economic growthit largely consists of people pontificating on a commercial world about which they know little.
Forgetting the first point in the list, are we? Didn't they say that The Pirate Bay are raking in cash? In addition, they ignore simple principles like the incredible ammount of free publicity that is provided with filesharing. If it wasn't for illegal filesharing, I would never have learned about artists like Devin Townsend, Battles, Don Caballero, God is an Astronaut, Neurosis etc., and I would not have bought their music.
8. Piracy is not caused by poverty. Professor Zhang of Nanjing University found the Chinese citizens who bought pirate products were mainly middle- or higher-income earners.
Interesting fact, but alas, it has nothing to do with whether or not filesharing is bad.
9. Most people know it is wrong to file-share copyright infringing material but won't stop till the law makes them, according to a recent study by the Australian anti-piracy group MIPI.
Oh my, what an inconvenient truth. Next they'll be telling us that people who smoke pot know it's illegal! Seriously. Law and morals are two completely different thing, and only inderectly influence eachother.
10. P2P networks are not hotbeds for discovering new music. It is popular music that is illegally file-shared most frequently.
That's funny. I swear I read that it was irrelevant whether or not music was from a major label(popular) or from an independant label(not quite so popular) in the third point in the list. In any case it doesn't matter. Just because there's more popular music being shared doesn't mean there isn't plenty of lesser known artists work being shared.
Linus Torvalds lecturing other people on wanking with their opinions. That's almost as funny as George Bush talking about education and literacy.
See, now I'm curious. Is there anything else you don't know?
Don't see how it matters. As long as the hackers want to play with it, it will be hacked. And I don't know too many hackers who would pass over playing around with new tech.
I was under the impression that this has been known for a long time. Or perhaps it was just suspected. Can anyone clarify?
Depends on the laptop. If the laptop doesn't go in sleep mode properly and you put it in a bag, blocking free air flow, it will probably overheat (depending on how good the cooling is, and how much heat the components generate).
Whoa! Read that comment and logged straight in to facebook! Was it one of those "Don't think of a black cat" moments?
If you want to further edit torrent functionality, take a look at opera:config.
Uuuh... what?

Doesn't matter. There are adblock plugins for IE and Opera as well.
So they are worried about ad-blocking and recommend installing Opera which has an excellent content blocker built in. Seems odd.
The Speed jump was fake? Next I suppose they'll try to tell us that you can't really fly into the sun with a spaceship the size of Manhattan either. Phooey!
Agreed. All hail RMS!

A journalist's job is to report, regardless of whether or not it's the truth.
I might add that the bigges threat to whales today is a reduction of habitat and food, not hunting.
