Well then, I guess I'm just not an engineer. Not by your definition, anyway. Never mind that I hold an engineering degree. Nor that I graduated top of the class at a prestigious university. Nor that if you have a PC, firmware that I designed and wrote is probably running on it. No, you've defined what an engineer is. I guess I'll have to accept it.

From your link to the definition of irony:

"5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected. "

I think this is the definition of irony that people actually use correctly quite often, and applies in this case of a man buying what he thought was a great product, and then driving it off a cliff.

Still sad, however. From the little bit that I read online, he seemed like a nice, charitable individual.

The politicians sold you on the "driving is privilege, not a right" bullcrap. They did that to make it easier to take your rights away from you. Given the need to commute to earn a living, and the lack of viable public transit (think SoCal), it's absolutely a right to drive, don't let them tell you otherwise, even if you did sign a contract that says otherwise.

It's not as trivial to change external interfaces as you may think. I've worked on hdd firmware, so I can say that the abstractions aren't as clean as you may hope. Performance is everything. Performance over ATA, that is. ATA specifies how to handle internal cache, for example, so you may need to do some ATA-specific tricks further down then you would like. Otherwise your latest drive may not make it onto that new Dell system. Keeping things clean and abstract so that you can just pop on another interface isn't always the highest priority.
