from the happy-where-they-are dept. Shouldn't that be "from the less-miserable-than-where-they'd-be-with-Vista dept."? :) I hear a lot of people bitching about XP every day, but they'd all be loathe to switch to Vista. In fact, they'd have a good chuckle at the very notion. I'm actually impressed that relatively many are considering an alternate OS....
Yes. See the Jargon file. The term "hacker" has a long and distinguished history, before it was hijacked by the asshats who are "crackers". Yes, but therein lies the problem I've always seen with the term that the tech community would prefer people use, i.e. that "cracker" already has a slang definition, and most people in the world will have reactions ranging from confusion to effrontery at the notion that their computer system was compromised by a bunch of rednecks.
Conventional wisdom: they'll never get away with it, think of all the corporate proprietary data stored on M$ machines all over the place, there'll be a huge uproar from the private business sector alone.
Experiential wisdom, based on M$ track record: they'll probably try, eventually.
Anyone know anything about the cost of these things? The cynic in me is imagining lawyers feverishly rewriting health insurance coverage clauses. I hope that as it becomes widespread, that "joe war-amputee" can afford it.
I would guess that this would really put some terror into the enemy because their attacker can't die, while they can. They can't terrorize their attacker with roadside bombs or anything. They "kill" it, well, another one just rolls off the assembly line. That is, until they capture one and infect it with a virus, or discover some of the technological goodies inside. I know, there are probably safeguards and auto-destructs and other necessary implements of military paranoia installed, but the enemy the military is currently engaging has shown an absolutely amazing capability for adaptive warfare.
You know, I don't *like* it, and yes, I'd like to be able to rip a stream so that I can store the file and listen to it later to decide if I want to buy it, but it seems to me that the only onus on the radio stations under this "catch" is to stay vaguely abreast of those who are breaking their systems. Apple did this, quietly mending their DRM when it was broken to keep the RIAA off their back. When it comes down to it, if the RIAA and record companies are so lame that they feel they need these types of nominal assurances (and there's *always* going to be a way to get around them), then, well, I don't like it, but I'd much rather not say goodbye to Pandora and Last.fm, where I've been exposed to most of the great music I've *legally bought* in the last couple of years. On a slightly related note, I hope that Apple, with the digital distribution leverage that it has, is able to prove with its DRM-free tracks, that the old model doesn't work, but that may be too much to ask from the RIAA.
Time to bone up on a little philosophy homework....
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but only malware hurts me....
Throw me a bone (let me steal that album)....
I'm a kid with ADHD, addicted to gaming and the Internet, with restless leg syndrome. I'd like to get some more uppers to paradoxically take care of my attention problems, some downers to counteract the uppers, and some sleeping pills to help me stop checking my mail late into the night. My parents don't care what I do in my free time as long as I'm still going to school, and you'll never believe some of the stuff I've found online. I want to quit gaming so much, but I may need drugs to do that too....
My friend, my friend, though I agree with much of what you say, do you not realize that./ will now tear you to shreds as a rabid Mac "advertisement-in-a-post" fanboi? What? You're posting anonymously, you say? Oh, carry on, and don't look back at the carnage you left here... ;)
Couple of points on your post: 1. How right you are about the no-bid, money-wasting thing--it's happening right now in Iraq, where millions have been wasted and in many cases, little reconstruction to show for it (sorry about the Coastal Post link--it was in major news publications a couple of weeks ago, but this is the most relevant recent hit in a Google News "Bechtel Iraq" search). 2. Isn't it sad that you have to say "probably," because in so many cases, it seems like these huge taxpayer decisions are made without anyone knowing about them?

They just don't want Linux on an Acer.
Not a troll, just saying.

No. You're wrong. Now I'm ordering YOUR brain impounded and destroyed.
Dear brain processor dude: this is God. Cease and desist. I own the patent on brains. Have a nice day.

Can't they nominate a better rack?
I forgot:
Ewetube, you sick sonofabitch (R)!
"Mr. or Mrs. presidential hopeful, from which tube do you think this video question came?"
Potential answers:
The tube connected to your house (R).
The tube down which our country has gone (D).
Why, YouTube, of course (I)!
In Soviet Intel, Linux Beowulf clusters of these bit you 64 times!

Hahahaha!! And I make fun of people for doing that--that's outstanding!
Soooo, is this seriously studied there as the site would have one believe?
(This may seem like a troll, but it's not--I'm genuinely curious.)

OK, uh, that's kinda messed up...

Julius Levinson: You don't actually think they spend $20,000.00 on a hammer, $30,000.00 on a toilet seat do you?
They're testing their new "-1000000000000 Offtopic" rating designator. But now it's for stories instead.
