Oh, and the trailer (what I could make out of it) looks pretty damned good.

From what I could see, it looks decent. There are a lot of characters from the comics making an appearance, including gambit and what looks like juggernaut. Wolverine's origin is one of the better comics that I've read, and they got Hugh Jackman back.

The things that worry me are Gavin Hood directing and how badly they messed up the last movie. From his imdb page, it looks like he's extremely inexperienced.

I'm going to go ahead and call bullshit. My dad was an electrical engineer and raised a very large family on that one salary. We never suffered for lack of money and my mom got to stay at home and pay attention to the kids. I've got three siblings that are raising families on a single income and when I have children, I'll do it too.

It's just a matter of priorities. If someone wants to raise children on a single income while the other parent stays at home, it's entirely possible to do so as long as they're willing to cut back on luxuries. Maybe they'll have to stay in tents instead of staying in hotels during vacations, and maybe they'll eat out with the family only once a year, but they can do it. It's all about priorities, and nowadays it doesn't seem like family's as much of a priority as it used to be.

Check out some of the things that they're rating it on, too. A lot of their complaints and ratings come from communication and support issues, where most open source software fails. That's why there's a service industry being built up around open source software. You'll also notice that they didn't rate any software that has a big company behind it, like RHEL or MySQL or anything like that.

That being said, these are valid complaints, and if external support is going to be an issue with your company, then you need to think very carefully about whether open source software is right for you.

  15. Re:more numbers on Wii Is the New US Console Leader · · Score: 4, Interesting

For the US, there are still twice as many xboxs that have been sold than ps3s. If you include Europe, it's 1.5x as many. Japan, of course, skews those numbers worldwide, but there's still a wide gulf between the xbox and ps3 in terms of how many are actually in homes. Game makers are hesitant to release games for the ps3 exclusively, even when Sony offers a lot of money for that exclusivity. Hell, even Final Fantasy 13 isn't going to be exclusive, and their main line has been exclusive to the playstation since the ps1.

I expect that sales of the ps3 will continue to be high simply because it's a great blu ray player that gets most of the games that the xbox gets, but I doubt that they're going to sell games as fast as the xbox does and their hardware sales will fall dramatically this holiday season when a really good, relatively cheap blu-ray player comes out. The ps3 won't die or reach the levels of irrelevancy that the gamecube ever reached, but I doubt that it'll pass the 360.

This would be as stupid as saying that WoW proves more people want to play on their PCs than want to play on a console; after all, there are more people on WoW than own a Wii or DS, and that's not even counting the number of housewives and others who are playing Zuma or similar casual games. PC gaming isn't dead, consoles are just entering their golden age.

Kids aren't full grown adults and they shouldn't be treated as such. If you raise them properly they'll be able to understand the differences between home and government and act accordingly. So, hardware-wise, they only sell high end stuff. The thing with the high end is that you start getting diminishing returns. I build moderate towers for half what the high end computers would cost and get 75% of the performance at least, although often it's closer to 80% or 90%. From what I've seen, macs tend to fall later on the curve than I (and most people I know) like to hit, after the performance-per-dollar starts declining.
