If you have Microsoft Office, go that way and get him to do some VBA with Excel for his maths skills, that's especially good to get the graphs and pie charts and the algebra. That being said, ASP (not the .net) version is available as part of the personal web server that comes with XP, so, VB comes to play again, he can leverage that as a fun introduction to web page. Finally, get some Javascript to further his web programming skills and since JavaScript's core roots are in C/C++, eventually, you can jump to C/C++ to show him where all this high-level stuff comes from. I think Canada needs to rethink this strategy. First, there should be a way to establishing credibility in the identity of a person going online. It may be time for governments of countries like Canada, the US, etc... to get on board with a "internet based age verification system" which all web based social networks must use in order to access their servers. The porn sites have it easy, have a credit card, then you're of age. If this was done upfront and in an honest fashion, this issue simply wouldn't be. As it is, many websites either keep this info in a generic way or just plain omit it. 9. Where is common sense when you need it? on Visually Impaired Gamer Sues Sony · · Score: 1

Video Games are for the most part, a combination of visual animation, manual dexterity and audio cues all orchestrated and arranged in such a way to deliver a plot and purpose in order to play the game. If I were to become blind, I would not be able to play a video
Now, if we could make games accessible, it would require the User Interface to be adaptable to the impaired..

    That means the following:.

if you can plug "video" information in the brain directly, bypassing the eyes for the blind.

If you can do the same for "sound" information for the deaf..

If you can somehow make controls "brain" operated for the manually impaired....

    .

We aren't quite yet there, although there are people out there trying to find ways to overcome these obstacles..

At the moment, with the current technology, it is simply impossible for all the games to be accessible..

And, I can't see why game console manufacturers as well as game designers would have to limit their designs strictly for the impaired..

Suing Sony for this, well, why not sue the music industry for not making their products available to the hearing impaired and the deaf?.

Not all people are born the same, some have limitations that others dont. .

Sure, whoever can somehow come up with the technologies to bridge these limitations will certainly gain a huge market..

Yes, it would be great, for anyone with limitations to have new options..

    But gaming isn't a priviliege, it's entertainment. .

Access to information, I can understand, which is why I'm a strong believe in the W3C accessibility guidelines..

But entertainment is very subjective and the reality is, not all are born equal, that's the truth..

  11. the context is missing here... on RIAA Says "Don't Expect DRMed Music To Work Forever" · · Score: 1

Reading the original article, I can't help but think about how greedy the RIAA truly is and how this organization simply doesn't understand the basic nature of internet-based music content delivery. If you purchase a DRM encrypted song, to me, it's like purchasing an encrypted DVD. it's a purchase. As long as you can play it, no problem. Shouldn't be any device that stops you from playing it or any expiry date. Now, I know I'm not taking into aspect the technical nature of DRM'ed music, but again, the issue at first shouldn't be technical, but conceptual and.. ethical. In my honest opinion, instead of "selling" DRM music, the model should be to lease DRM access to music. As long as you pay your "periodic" fee, you access this "selection" of music. Company goes out of business, the music stops working. The RIAA goes for the most aggressive tactics, like someone who would throw tons of shit to the wall, eventually, some of it will stick. The RIAA does the same thing with their tactics. Instead of trying to control everything at a granular level, they should think in terms of bulk access. In the end, selling music online isn't the way to go, but giving subscription based access to music based on various criteria, such as types of music (blues, disco, etc..), by bands, and any other form of grouping would be more profitable and it's "access" based on duration, therefore, nothing permanent and constant streams of revenues.

The only time one can complain about used games, especially PC based ones, is when they sell a game which offers no DRM. When I leave Windows Messenger running idle on my cell phone, the battery life goes down to 3 hrs.. If I close it, I last a full day. Ironic, because that's the behavior for all battery powered devices. 15. Why did they bother? on Vista Capable Lawsuit Loses Class-Action Status · · Score: 2, Insightful

This lawsuit was a joke. For once I have to say I'm happy Microsoft won.

    Why?

    Simple.

There is nothing wrong with advertising a PC as "Vista Capable".

Even if it only runs Basic Home Edition of Vista, certainly it doesn't contradicted its ability as being "Vista Capable".

Furthermore, retailers and manufacturers who have been pushing Vista with their products (PCs, laptops, notebooks, etc...) have usually also made sure that they recommended their products with words such as "runs best with (insert flavor of Vista)".

This is one of those times where clearly, greed was the only reason for this lawsuit.

On another note, the cost of a laptop being "Vista Capable" and how much they overpaid? Oye Vay! Are they retarded? Even I know there are no collation between a product being branded as "Vista Capable" and a higher cost of purchase. If anything, I recall laptops being sold for like 400$ with Vista Basic. Dirt Cheap.

Now, let's not think I like Vista, heck no, in my honest opinion, it's a crappy product, but, this isn't about what I like, it's just about being fair.

Again, this lawsuit and the people behind it are just trying to make a quick buck on Microsoft by conning the system.

At face value, it seems to be the right choice.

But the issue here isn't about which phone offers a better platform to develop, but which phone will be better as a phone!

Will the Google phone be a really good phone?

For the most of us, we want great reception, we want quality transmission and voice. And of course, great rates.

So, if the Google phone is as good or better than the iPhone as an actual phone, and their marketing makes it more appealing to users than the iPhone, then, anyone wanting to develop apps for a phone, would be getting a better chance at success with the Google phone.

This is where Android kicks ass, because of it's open sourceness and the fact that if Google phone is to be more popular, it will mean a larger client based to sell these apps.

Also have a nice JVC DVD/VHS Combo and a Philips DivX / DVD Recorder.

Now I know that the newer Blue Ray format, with the newer high Def TV give much crisper details, but the truth is, I don't care.

The view I get from my TV is great, for me anyways, and for anyone who has been watching movies with me at home. If the movie sucks, it's not because it's in DVD or Blue-Ray format.

Justifying the investment for this new tech is hard when you have bills to pay.

Sony would have to almost give out the players next to nothing and make their Blue-Ray discs the same cost as normal DVDs in order to make us cross over.

But still, I have over 600 DVDs in my collection, so, I've already spent a lot of money, I can't see myself repurchasing any of the movies I have in Blue Ray def.

Technically, Blue-Ray is better than DVD, but in the end, for most of us, it just doesn't justify the extra cost and bother. DVD movies are just as fun to watch, the minute image detail that you get from Blue-Ray, isn't for most of us, worth the investment.
