  2. take a shovel and.. on Ask Slashdot: Am I Too Old To Learn New Programming Languages? · · Score: 2

Seriously, if you are asking the question, then you need to take a shovel and dig yourself a nice lil' hole and go for a dirt nap. I'm a practical idealist. Sounds like an oxymoron, I know, but yeah, I'm 45 yrs old and I keep learning new stuff everything. I'm a developer, an instructor and I do believe that the day I stop learning, the day I think I know enough, that's the day I should just kill myself. Do you like programming? do you like a challenge? That's what you should be asking yourself. You claim to have 25 yrs of experience, have you not learned anything yet? what's so freakin' challenging about a new programming language when you got all of the other ones under your belt? I have a basic, c, c++ and assembler background. You seem to have a similar one, with even more including cobol. What's out there that you wouldn't be able to conquer? So, it's not if you are too old, but rather, do you give a crap. If you do, go for it, it's always useful and it won't be a waste of time especially\ if it's a hot commodity to learn. Unless you are kinda mediocre as a programmer to begin with, but hey, that's a story between you and your previous projects/employer. And yeah, there are a lot of young ones out there in the market and they don't charge as much or work twice or three times the amount of hours to get it done. I laugh my ass off when I see that. Because for me, I can get the job done in half the time, and it's done right. Why? it's called experience. Every project I've ever done has been a lesson learned in trial and errors. Even in success, I learned that it could have been done better and basically applied this knowledge to my future projects. By now, having myself 20+ yrs of experience in the field, I've yet seen anything which doesn't relate in some ways to something I've done in the past. How you sell yourself is how you define the relevancy of you as a person, a resource and then skills you have to offer. Keeping with the current trends and lingo of the industry is all about learning, nothing different than learning a new programming language. So, do you give a crap? do this industry still make you excited? Those are the questions you need to ask and you are the only one to provide the answer. Cheers! Claude

If more money can't be given, then extra hours could be compensated in free time in the down times or some other perks. In the long run, however, programmers burn out. If all the player was doing his using the interface as intended, then the fault is the casino, not the player. There are no "sequences" which can be determined as cheating unless these were instructed. It's really that simple. It's gambling. And it's an automated system. Don't put it out there if it's defective. The rationale here could be the reverse. How many people, because the system has glitches, could have won, but never did. Casinos can be sore losers.. The players won their monies.. End of story. If there is a glitch.. Take the machines out, fix them and get over it. If I were the players I would sue the casinos for wasting their times. These casinos are designed to take your money. If they get to lose some.. tooo bad.. All part of the game.

  10. to answer your question on How Do You Prove Software Testing Saves Money? · · Score: 1

If I were to try and find out if software testing is worth, think of the following questions to ask:

    Recurring bugs?
how long does it take to fix? (programmer time)
how much productivity was lost because of it? (user time)
Did the bug fix initiate a cascade of other fixes in other modules?
Did the recurring bug fix cause database changes?

    New Bugs?
Same questions, but, with the added, how did it get introduced?

Now, Software testing, should be done first and foremost based on establish scenarios which the feature you are coding is design to perform..
This means that once a programmer has implemented new code, there should be a set of X scenarios, which accomplishes specific tasks, which the app should be run against in order to see if the new feature will behave accordingly and existing features are not impaired.
    That is software testing 101.
Selenium framework do this type of testing.
If you need to know that you aren't mucking with your existing code, then you need actual unit testing, jUnit, jsUnit, etc..
Bad code practices tend to be hard to unit test thoroughly.
when code is well designed, the unit test code is easy to write
\ The heavy cost of designing unit test, is when you must refactor your existing code base for unit testability.
Still, for the most part, "software testing" as usability/goal oriented tests, that should always be done.
For the most part, the question is how to implement this?
Depending on the complexity of the application, I would recommend that tests are designed around the more heavily used features first, then the areas where bugs are found. There should be no areas untested, but prioritizing the work helps greatly.

  11. Selenium Testing and jsUnit testing on How Do You Prove Software Testing Saves Money? · · Score: 1

I've written Selenium and jsUnit test suites and unit test frameworks in the past. All I can say is that when designed correctly, these unit test save deployment headaches. When an app evolves with new features and/or the modification of existing features, unit testing is a must in order to catch bugs before you head for production. Does it save money? well, yes, because, once a piece of software is in production, the people who depend on it are using it. Introducing new bugs because of bad software implementation will disrupt the app, causing hours of user time. That is money saved. But even in development phase, good unit testing are a solid way of ensuring your code is robust. It really becomes vital as you work with a large amount of developers.

Try and get him to do something cool in JavaScript at least, as a starting point, tons of online tutorials, all free! :) Assuming he truly is interested in programming, then then let his ambitions dictate which path he should take. Once you know what it is, then research to see the best way to get there (meaning the topics to learn and the order in which he must learn them). But they are not real, they are drawings.

Now, real sex offenders are the ones producing actual pedophilia and/or pornographic material which is NOT made by consenting adults (rape, etc..)

Think of the Iraq war, where Iraqi women were raped by US soldiers or in Afghanistan, were Afghan Soldiers and interpreters are raping young boys. That is sick, that is real, and these are sex offenders.

But viewing these cartoons, to me, well, as long as you don't show them to children, who cares!!

To each his/her own I say. Personally, I don't think they are funny, but that's my opinion, certainly, I wouldn't enforce this onto others.

In my honest opinion, this type of content should be placed in sites restricted to adults. No one should be able to "google" this stuff so easily, should be restricted. Again, to repeat myself, this is my opinion.

As far as labelling anyone a "sex offender" for viewing these things, all this does is make this society one step closer where soon you will be arrested if you have naughty, angry thoughts.

Anybody remembering the "Minority Report" movie?

When a judge at the Supreme Court, decides that viewing these types of cartoons makes one a "sex offender", it's time for that judge to visit ye ol' "Funny Farm" and take a long vacation in a very round room with lots of padding and and have this judge wear one of these shirts where your arms are tied to your sides.
