My year 10 computing teacher told us a story about how in the 60s they used a single number to store the year, and when they got to 1970 they were like "wait a sec!" - it all came down to space - what was the point of storing two or four numbers if you only needed one? it doesnt take much to extend the idea to 2000 for programs written in 1970, except they needed the space and why would their code last so long?
we are now rather spoilt with storage space/bandwidth/etc
no nut-gripping involved (except for what they charge, which is peanuts)

I agree that large song libraries are not well dealt with (and not to do with scrolling/speed).
Sure, the search function is *the best* when you want to find the artist/genre/album you want to play
wouldnt it be great, though, if you could have your whole library visible and be able to group via artist/genre/album/whatever - as in choose the field you want to group by, then have a collapsable group (think finder list-view directories with the arrows or those little +/- boxses) formed for each matching group
the problem with search is if u cant remember all the stuff u have! u want a reduced, summarised version at your fingertips..
The reason for this, conversely, is that Apple is really trying to minimize the times that people think of "Files" instead of "Music" or "Photos".
As much as I can see why they (apple, etc) are doing this, they have to realise it doesnt work! Both of my parents have used computers for long enough that they cannot shake off the idea of files, and that they are stored in a heirachical directory. They both hunt down the file they want in the Finder/Explorer to copy it into another program or whatever - drag and drop just isnt intuitive for them
Now, I love drag and drop its great - but it takes effort to change peoples mindset to use it . LIkewise the concept of a song or a photo often confuses people because they have already learnt about files! and their understanding is not great enough to get how the disctinctions all fit together
yeah but this still keeps the "Music" directory with one or two itunes files - unless your files are on a second hard drive or in another users account, you might as well commit to using "Music"
at least its not "My Music"... *shudder*
it does annoy me I cant delete capital letter'd directories, but I have accepted some lack of choice for an overall better OS
what do people think will happen in the future if things like this go ahead and our perceived rights to listen to music, copy files, watch content etc become so restricted and expensive we spend more money on them than anything else?
will some major change happen? will a critical mass of peeved consumers force a change? or will everyone accept it and pay more, thinking its just that things become more expensive and that somehow technology costs accumulate as it develops?
will we have anything that we can watch/listen to/use more than once per payment? will our credit cards become our access cards to tv/radio/content?
do you think anyone gives a crap? do normal people care about paying more for music the same way they hark up about a 1c rise in the price of petrol?
will a generational change make a difference???
seriously, are we doomed forever if we give up now? if we continue to fight will it make a difference in the long run, or sooner?
I'm dying for one but if I have to wait til July like US ppl in the above posts have to, I'd rather wait till that pay check... unless they dont take your money untill its ready to ship???
perhaps only a few use it, but perhaps again they would be more tempted to swtich to osx and/or ipod if they could still use what they wanted - and would tell their friends etc...
i switched to os x and love it, but it does grate me ever so often when i just dont have the choice over *every little thing* like you do in linux, and even often windoze...
My old nokia 8310 had an FM radio that, when you got a call, would ring through the headphones and mute the radio when you answered the call, and then turn the radio back on when you hung up (answering via the wired remote on the headphones so no digging through my bag)
I think integrating a phone into something like an ipod would be a great idea in some respects and just annoying in others.
I'd love to stop getting weird looks in the street while im listening to my pod and my phone rings and i dont hear it...
id love to have less stuff to carry around and less stuff to forget to charge up
however, the main use of my mobile is for sms, and id hate to sacrifice the ipod interface to enable text messaging... though maybe ~10 little buttons (or less) could be popped under the scroll wheel, with good predictive text this could work
also, i abuse my phone terribly - it gets dropped in clubs, used in the rain, attacked with greasy fingers and the like... and then i just change the cover and its all nice - id hate for my pod to get so dirty and abused!! sure, my old phone cost more than my pod! but the changable everything helped when it got scratched etc
size is also an issue - weenie phones fit great into little handbags, even the ipod mini wouldnt do that too well
There was a great "nanotech" special on the onion, with all the benefits this new technology could bring.
My favourite had to be (something to the tune of) "with nanoparticles we can control the weather and turn the whole world into a delicious icecream wonderland"
As to the actual merits of the article, I found it to be a puff piece
Agreed!
Is it any wonder that the average American is a moron? Critical thinking doesn't live here anymore.
Not just americans! The whole world seems to be becoming more and more divided into those with critical thinking skills, and those who just wish to get on with their day and react to the hype presented to them through the media daily.
If the people like the article author, whose job it is to do so, can't make a decent attempt to penetrate into the mass-market with decent information that helps to dispel the hype, who is going to? The divide between the (mass) ignornant and the (minority) "informed" will become too great to bridge - after all, even "informed" people (myself included) can't rightly say they have all the facts so what hope does the rest of the world have?
half the hype of "nanotechnology" is that anything on the order of 100s of nanometers (or tenths of a micron) is considered "nano". so "microdrives" and harddrives using small scale components are lumped into the nanotechnology bundle
silicon technology today is already at 90nm and less process sizes - this is "nanotechnology" and really, has nothing to do with self-producing robots, dna, anything to do with medical science or even the "nanoparticles" thie article refers to
i find the whole grouping of all "nanotech" science into one huge blob of hyped up well, GOO, quite disturbing. this article really doesnt do anything to dispel hype or fear about this mysterious "nanotechnology"
my mum seems to think my reasearch in semiconductor physics (nano-scale!) could possibly be dangerous because "nanotechnology" is dangerous... i mean really! or else she thinks that i have to be careful because people's perception of nanotechnology is that its dangerous
sure, some medical or chemical or virul applications of making things on a very small scale could pose some threat to the people who work with it or get treated with it *maybe* - i dont know nearly enough about these applications to make any broad assumptions and hence ill leave that to the experts to worry about
the hype about nanotech sucks and i dont even think that articles like this are effective in dispelling the hype or fear even though they are trying to - something needs to be done but i just dont know what...
i guess i have seen some things around that are so marked up it would be cheaper to factor in postage, but it seems that its such an effort and a wait (how can i get my shopping fix if i cant have it *nownownow* ?:P)
i like the idea of online music coz i never like all the songs on one cd!
im in australia and we get jipped on everything - we dont even have any online music stores - want to stop ppl sharing and downloading? offer them an alternative!
id love to live in the us just so i *could* order things on line, or at least without $20 min shipping (and weeks of waiting)
does this only work if you have an aol account? i tried it with being logged into a.mac account and it tried to find AOL users - and can ICQ users send back to someone not on ICQ??
(decent) ICQ support (as in using your icq account) would be much more useful - noone here (australia) uses AOL (tho they do use hideous MSN - only because of its default install on XP damn microsoft!)
what i like about icq is the fact you can leave msgs for people who aren't online - the essence of paging services! (i wont go into icq/messanging as the worse chat medium ever...)
quite frankly i think ichat is the biggest waste of time ever and has no use to me at all! anyone agree? is this an american thing??
Sauron is not "absolutely" aware of the rings location when its put on - there are many examples of this the most significant being Sam putting it on to hide from the orcs after Shelob's lair, the game would have be up if Sauron knew he was there.
Sam does suggest that putting it on *inside* Mordor would give it away though, and hence when Gollum puts it on Sauron suddenly goes oh crap...
I had the same problem, and ended up just burning all the files to a couple cds with the ftp directories. As far as I have figured out, the best option is to make the 'suse' dir as the root on the cd, and make sure the first CD has the setup, images and a1 directories. Otherwise I think you can just specify the path on the cd where the files are during setup, maybe;)
i have never used ichat, as I dont use AIM or .mac...
even if it now supports jabber, how does that help anyone who doesnt use it already?
how can i get all of my friends to switch?
how can i get ichat to be of any use to me at all?
