    It requires a landline only at setup. After that you can use the net. This is of course stupid. Tech support told me it was only because they don't have the software to support the net connect on the boxes until it downloads an update. silly excuse.

    still, mine is hooked through a little 802.11 USB thing and works fin.

    One problem.... if you have circumstantial evidence you need some kind of motive. What motive would America have for killing homosexual and black people?

    As far as more blacks than whites being affected... perhaps that's just another symptom of the mis appropriation of wealth in the world; not a genetic target.

    um... you did read the article right? The one that talks about how adaware only stops maybe half of the spyware? That's a little bit less than perfect in my book.

    While I'm a Mac user I do keep a PC around for the occasional use. This is a machine that I don't really use for anything. Maybe the occasional work product on windows or a game now and then. Noone is downloading all kinds of shareware or really messing with it. I decided to put a virus scanner on it and low and behold I'm completly infested. Mostly due to IE exploits. I'm a professional and know what i'm doing and I get infested. Just imagine joe sixpack.

    Would you America bash if I was right in front of you? I don't understand why the cheap shot was necessary. We aren't evil. Just not perfect either; we make mistakes. Still I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

    I'm glad you love your country. Its not perfect either. Remember England ruled the world and did things in India and South Africa that history will show to be truly wrong.

    Besides...who still has a Queen?!?! just kidding with ya.

    I still don't understand why beginners would not want to go to Java first. It is easier not to shoot yourself in the foot. The tools are free. Additionally a beginner has no need to worry about performance in the first place. C has its place. I use it when I need to. Its not a great language; especially for beginners. Don't get me started on C++.

    No matter how good and careful you are in a massive multi developer C/C++ environment there will be memory leaks and pointer errors all over the place.

    I use Java software every day. From the great JEdit to build tools like Ant, to all of the in house built tools. Runs fine for me and I'm crippled with Windows and the corporate mandated virus scanner.

    In my career I've written more C then anything else. Followed by PERL for test automation. Recently I'm working a new program that is 100% Java. It has been a pleasure. I do not see any huge performance problems that people seem to complain about. I'm not just writing a database/forms program either but doing REAL work in image processing.

    I have no idea what you mean about byte code making it harder. You compile things into a JAR, in most OS's you can double click the JAR and run it. How is that difficult?

    Tons of production software is written in Java. Especially server side.

    C/C++ are out there but the reality is that they are too hard to use for very large project. It can and will be done successfully but it costs a fortune. I can do so much more using Java with so much less budget that its amazing.

    As far as being multiplatform. It comes close. I've never had any huge problems outside of cosmetic differences that might need to be tweaked, but that it easy. I was even doing 3d graphics on the mac and demoing them blindly on a windows PC without testing on Windows (I refuse to own one of those) and had no problems.

    Seeing as I was modded flamebait I guess maybe I made my point wrong.

    I'll agree with your comment though. The artist most likely didn't get to make the rules (in fact I'm sure none of them did).

    This still doesn't change the fact that someone owns this music and the artists are employed by those labels under terms they understand. None of this gives people the right to steal from the music industry. If you don't like it then support indie rock instead. If you want to listen to the corporate music then you have to pay the man and play by their rules.

    You have no right to free music downloads. The people who own/create the music get to make the rules. If you don't like it I have no sympathy for you. What you THINK something should cost means nothing.

    Maybe artists are getting screwed, then they shouldn't have signed on with the big labels.

    I think the real question becomes: does your solution scale to 500,000 players? This is where a big company can come in and help you out building a system that can handle the load of half a million players hitting you up with ghost runs and high scores, let alone matchmaking services.

    An iPod datapoint for you:

    I've had my 10GB for about two years now. I have beat the hell out of this thing. It goes with me to work and the gym daily. At the gym it has fallen off of several machines, all chugging along just fine. I'm very impressed with the durability of the thing.

    Of course, the sad part for me is I purchased a 4 year service plan from best buy for it for only $40 back when I bought it. I WISH the thing would die because they'd end up giving me a newer bigger one! Any suggestions for killing it without them being able to detect it?

    I don't see why it would need a password for his Home directory. This a *nix-ish system remember so the user will likely have write permission on their own home directory. A password would only have been necessary if attempting to damage the system or other user's directories (to give root privs). Of course so many installers require passwords most people would likely end up typing it in regardless thinking it just an automatic part of the installation procedure.

    I think you are confused about the definition of average. say you have 10 users who use so many "units" of some resources. Say 9 of them use 10 units and 1 of them uses 1 unit. The average unit consumption is 9.1 meaning that 90% of this population uses more than the average. Average is NOT the middle value!

    The united states has one of the most efficient and well priced postal systems in the world. Bulk mail is what keeps the prices DOWN! Think economics of scale. It wouldn't be worth delivering mail if people only recieved a few items a week (really... think about how much mail you get that is truly your mail and not just junk). Without the junk/bulk mail it would cost you a fortune to mail anything because the infrastructure would be so expensive.

    The purpose of the general education system is to teach students to think and understand the world we live in. The point of school is not, and has never been, to train our youth to join the ranks of the working. That is the purpose of trade schools. If you teach a child how to learn then they will be able to tackle whatever work most interests them. Same goes for teaching programming languages in schools. Stop trying to teach Java to high school students; instead focus on something like pascal or better yet some kind of functional programming. These may not be used in the "real world" as much, but they sure do make you think.

    It really isn't these specific examples of privacy that are the problem. The question is: Where does it stop?

    Should there be a federal agency that opens all of your postal mail to make sure you're not breaking any crimes?

    Howabout tracking all of your travels/purchases and maybe a homing device in your body? Then we can make sure you do no wrong.

    While we are at it why don't we ban free speech and a few books. You won't be needing that anymore...

    Add to all of this the fact that this will stop nothing but will take away freedom from our citizens and its just a worthless law.

    Would this have stopped the latest terrorist attack? Perhaps they could've used snail mail with codewords.. or even the telephone talking in codewords. Or even met to face to face (that's it, we need a law requiring a transcript of all conversations to be given to the proper authorities)

    What about 1-time pads for encryption? Completely unbreakable... yet inconvenient to make (and distribute). But it could be done.. of course then the senate would make a law making pads of paper illegal just to stop this kind of thing.

    There was a story in our local paper about Docker's coming out with "geek" pants this month (August 2001). I guess they were normal enough looking dockers except with "hidden" pockets that are on the inside of the pants and hide the lumps well. They said they were zippered pockets so I'm assuming they are hidden in the seam of the pants. Maybe Dockers.com has more info.

    Check out the C4.5 and ID3 decision tree algorithms by Quinlan. I'm sure a search on google will result in many hits. These are some great academic examples of decision trees and I believe this type of algorithm is the "decision tree" that is being discussed.

    If that is too confusing then try to find and introduction to Machine Learning or Learning Theory.

    As for Perceptrons, in terms of "learning theory", that usually means an algorithm that can divide a set of data into classes. If these data are decision making attributes that algorithm will divide them into 2 (or more?) parts, then the specific action indicates which "type" of behavior this is... or something like that.

    This is not the responsibilty of the government. This should be a chance for a business to step up to the plate with a family friendly "optional" setup. If people support this option and it is available they will buy it. There is no need for a state mandated law.

    Interesting view on my view. I didn't mean to sound arrogant, I simply make the point that there are experts in every field and the average person cannot be an expert in all of them.

    I go to a doctor when I'm sick; I do not try to do surgery on myself.

    I go to the electronics store when the tv breaks; I do not try to fix it.

    The average person does not want to be a computer expert; they want to write documents and surf the interet. the computer is a tool; not more interesting than any other tool. Corporations are trying to control this tool just like they control medicine and electronics. When in fact there are other tools available that the consumer just needs to be educated about (free tools in fact!).

    We simply need to help users to understand that they DO have a choice. If they choose subscription based software; then fine.. come to me when they screw you and I'll help you find another tool.

    I think of myself as libertarian... personal freedom before all else... I can see why you thought I sounded a bit liberal though. Does this clear it up?

    While geeks may not have to worry about it for ourselves; we do have some social responsibility to protect the average user from "bad things".

    Most users will shrug and accept what they are fed. If we want them to "see the light" of open source and free software (and especially non-subscription based products where you do not ever possess ANYTHING and they can just take away your software at their will [oh, you write web pages bashing MS, fine no more frontpage for you!]) then we need to help educate the masses rather than sitting back and watching them get taken for a ride.

    I can see it now; the software providers can censor whoever they want by simply stopping service. Average joe blow isn't computer savvy and has nowhere to turn without our help.

    I for one am very excited about this product. I see most of the comments here are pissed because it may not work for them so it must suck.

    Sega is doing the right thing by picking a distribution method that is reasonable and has a reasonably large market share (or will have...)

    If they made it over broadband you'd all complain; if it was over standard cable you'd complain it was too slow; if it was dialup you'd complain.

    I had the Sega Channel as a child and I for one cannot wait to have this in my area!

    It might be enjoyable (as well as a rude awakening!) to go to a real audio store instead of your standard circuit city style chain store. You can find some lesser known names that are what the true audiophiles use.

    I personally use an older Marantz receiver (no s-video and just pro-logic; but their newer models of course support all of that) and Nuance speakers... I absolutly love Nuance speakers. Getting a demo was such an eye opening experience.
