  1. Re:PalmOS Question marks... on Apple to release PalmOS device? · · Score: 1

There are plenty of Free software writers for the PalmOS out there. You can start by looking at my page at http://blevins.simplenet.com/palm/ for a list of GPL'd Palm software.
Also, try searching for "Pyrite" and "JPilot" on freshmeat for some nice desktop-side software.

I used to have hope for www.openhandheld.org, but that has been dead for a year. Maybe somebody would like to host a similar site?

One of the reasons that Palm has soooo much third-party software is because the development tools are easy to use and plentiful. Are you sure that you weren't confusing the Palm with the Rex?

They only have 25 shareware applications available (mostly games) for it. Compare this with the thousands and thousands of 3rd party applications available for the Palm. If you are satisfied with just using the built-in apps for a dayplanner replacement, the maybe DaVinci is an alternative to the Palm. But for anything else, the Palm rules. (even the built-in apps have 3rd party replacements that really improve the functionality of it).

You can patent inventions, not discoveries

You should note that the relevant section in the Constitution uses the words "Writings and Discoveries", not inventions.

Use of the word "invention" is promoted because in most people's minds it implies (wrongly) that the "invention" would never have come to be without that particular act.

I have worked in the area of mechanical engineering and design for many years, and have found that many of my designs (or "discoveries") that I arrived at completely independantly were later found to have been covered by a particular patent.

It should also be noted that finding that your "invention" is already covered by a patent does not necessarily prevent it from being used in your product (with or without permission). Instead, the relative strength and funding of the two parties legal staffs is the most important factor.

No mention is made of where the log files were on the apache test, which I assume to mean that they are in the default location (the same drive as the OS).

For the type of test they did (many small http requests), would the disk i/o of the log file become a bottleneck?

  10. Off topic: Why KDE is not included in Debian ? on Gnome @Download.com · · Score: 1

Because of the large number of authors for KDE (as opposed to Lyx) is was impossible/impractical to get special permission from each contributing author (as would be necessary for it to link with QT). Remember, slink was frozen way back in November.

It will probably be included in potato assuming that this special permission is obtained, or a QT2.0 version is released in time for a potato freeze.

But, just because it is impossible for us to distribute it officially does not mean that debs are not available. Many Debian developers use KDE. Just to to #debian on irc.openprojects.net and ask for the location of the debs if you are interested (I don't know the location offhand).

These locations are apt-able for easy installation. Make sure and read the README!

  12. Off topic: Why KDE is not included in Debian ? on Gnome @Download.com · · Score: 1

Lyx license is GPL with a special provision for linking with XForms.

KDE uses many GPL'd programs and would need the permission of every author whose code they used to be able to give this permission. Without that permission, it would be illegal to distribute KDE linked against QT. Hopefully, we will have a KDE linked against QT2.0 soon, and these problems will go away.

The problem with Jack was (besides being a little psychotic) that he didn't understand that maybe the job that he had wasn't really needed or wanted. He had a noble goal of saving all the nuts and acorns in the world, but killing squirrels was not the best way to approach it. Maybe ESR needs to understand that expanding the marketshare of OpenSource(tm) software is a worthy goal, but not if it means compromise.

We already have two worthy replacements already in place:
Tim 0'Reilly can tout the benefits of a "Collaborative Software Development Environment".
RMS can preach the value of Freedom in software.

ESR can now take a break from trying to confuse the public on the difference between these two.
