they rode the wave at the right moment, that's for sure. There are many things that contributed to their intial momentum. For example the advances in creating cheapo x86 clones. Their agreements with OEMs from early on (IBM for example). People use whatever comes with the machine. The fact that apps such as WordPerfect and Lotus 123 ran on their system as well as popular computer games.
Initially they did acceptable products, but after a while they started to crank out crap shamelessly (win98, 98se and me come to mind). This is the inertia I'm talking about. They've been riding the wave for almost 10 years now.
honestly #gentoo is one of the least helpful channels I've ever been in. I hung out there for a while, asked very specific questions about non-esoteric stuff, politely and everything, and just got ignored. In the end I figured out things myself, which is fine. The reason I installed gentoo is because it's more "manual" than other distros, however some help would have been nice...
Using the words "democracy" or "human rights" is not exactly a crime. According to the article (which you read, right?), the use of those words led to websites being banned at country-level. Allison from Amnesty also states that the arrested people were "expressing themselves".
As for MS, their guilt depends on their involvement in the human rights violation.
Agreed. However stuff like ignoring constraints, accepting bogus date values in a datetime column, and silently failing and guessing for you is pretty serious.
Any software won't do you much good if you don't deploy it correctly. Hell, it won't do you much good to crash into a tree because you don't know how to drive correctly. That's hardly a point in MySQL's favor. It's a point against the DBAs.
what do I care if I get 2 months instead of 1 month if the game sucks? I'll be out of dodge in a few days.
This also got me thinking: Boxed retail games do not _have_ to cost $50. Day of Defeat for example costs $20 at BestBuy. I think the reason they push a higher price tag is because they know many people won't stick around because people tend to quit after the game gets repetitve and boring.

not necessarily

please do not attribute to adequacy what is actually product of intertia.

they kept rolling away.
total nightmare to maintain.

:(
Say it isn't so!

it's a very thin layer
*rolls eyes*
"I've never seen it so it can't be true!"
unnecesary expense for many many people.
Actually is a good practice.
Especially if you're typing addresses that do not use the port 80 on an internal network.
intranet:8080 won't always work across browsers while http://intranet:8080 will.
Also if you're doing web work, the fact that when you crate links you must include it, makes it a (good) habit.
There was no Voodoo 2 AGP. That started with the Voodoo 3.

However, now that you mention it, I think I remember seeing some franken486's with PCI slots.
yeah, and probably neither would a 486
I bet DN4E will now license the Doom 3 engine and redo everything.
Nah.. I seriously think they are not working on that anymore. If they are, well... they don't seem to be making any progress...
Debian = Debra + Ian Murdock

I really didn't need to know you found cock-ups palatable. Really...
game quality is the most important factor.

Gaim also docks, and so does Everbuddy as far as I remember.
What kopete _should_ support is the freedesktop.org systray protocol so it's not restricted to KDE only.
I think I read a few months ago that something like 60+% of all new systems sold lately were laptops.
He's running a 486 you insensitive clod!
in almost any app in window you can right-click and select copy or paste from the context menu.
if you're blind you probably won't be in any better shape than you are right now. Blind people can't see 2D desktops.
OMG they're also campers! low blow... low blow...
