Also, the symbolic atomic clock is not just about nuclear annihilation. It also considers other threats to humanity as a whole, such as climate change. And the current US president and a great chunk of his cabinet are climate change deniers with the stated goal of pulling out of the internationally mediated Paris climate agrement.
Yes, yes. The association of nuclear scientist and everyone with a rational mind who hasn't given up on real facts instead of "alternative facts" is elitist and left wing biased. The entire world has lost its way and only American Conservatism remains on the path of truth and honesty.
Yes, I agree with what you say and cherry picking facts is a very serious concern. This is also frequently used by climate change deniers. What do you mean it's getting warmer? I have all the data right here from that one weather station in Alaska proving that temperatures have actually dropped in the last 60 years!
But yes, this is something that all sides of a political spectrum are always guilty of. That's why, in my opinion, it's very important to get your sources not just from one, or a select few news outlets. Especially not if they share the political alignment. Watch and read conservative news, and liberal ones. Diversify. Then think about it and form your own educated opinions. Research if you must. The truth is almost always somewhere in between.
But I truly think that regarding Trump, we are well beyond cherry picking facts. This man seems to make up reality as he goes.
And let's not forget that rational, intelligent people can disagree on matters of import, the significance of facts, and so forth without ceasing to be rational.
Are you sure you're not talking about opinions? Isn't the definition of a "fact" that it is a non-debatable, unambiguous truth? Such as the fact that Obama is christian and was born in the United States? If you are trying to soften up facts and put them up to debate, you are already by your knees in that Orwellian universe the White House would like to have us.
I am certain that Obama has said things that were not true, 100% certain. As has any serving president, sometimes knowingly, but let's give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it was unknowingly most of the time.
Yet this is nowhere near the incredible and outlandish, and frankly, sometimes outrageous claims that Donald Trump makes on a regular basis. If you are willing to put in the effort to provide me a list of Obamas "lies" while he was campaigning for president, I am willing to put in the effort to provide you with five Trump lies while he was campaigning for president - with references - for every Obama lie. It's a non-contest.
Watch that interview very carefully. There is no way she was talking about "other" facts that weren't being reported. She meant to say exactly what she said. The administration has "alternative facts" that better fit their agenda.
Look, I realize that there is this bitter rivalry in US society between liberals and conservatives. But try to put politics aside, and try to think as a sane human being.
Donald Trump is the guy who insisted Barack Obama is a Muslim and was not born in the US. He is the guy who once claimed he owned the Empire State Building, which is false and was false at the time. He is the guy who said he has been on the Time magazine "more than anybody" which is false. He is the guy who so often claimed that he never said something he just said a few days earlier. His Trump University has been trialed for fraud. One of his advisers is a guy who owns a right-wing conspiracy theory website that is specialized on the spreading of fake news.
Try to think about this rationally.
Donald Trump is either a serial liar or simply delusional. You can look all of his insanity up. If you believe him and his administration more than established, international media networks such as CNN, you have to face the fact that you have decided to stop being a rational thinking person.
You can hate on him all you want, but if fear of Trump can bring manufacturing jobs back, the people whose livelihood depended on manufacturing jobs and who voted for him are going to be happy they did
It's really fascinating how insane this presidency is. The left in the developed world has traditionally been against globalization and free trade, precisely out of fear of low-wage jobs not being competitive against developing countries overseas. Also out of fear of environmental and labor exploitation in countries with less regulations. It was the conservative, pro big business agenda to push for more globalization and free trade. Now you have Trump, who is a businessman himself and ran as a Republican, yet moving into a direction that runs counter to a few deeply rooted Republican beliefs. And despite his plans, he has still filled his cabinet with a few big business players who you'd think have little love for some of his isolationist plans. Similar story with NATO, his views of Russia and his not so conservative opinions on gay rights and abortion.
Trump has been voted by a few deeply conservative circles and disillusioned, low-class liberals, he is actually quite on the left with some of his policies, yet his cabinet is right, sometimes far-right, whereas his party is conservative... I'm just waiting for this presidency to implode onto itself. There are too many contradictions.
It won't help either that unfortunately Trump is such a twit.
And there I was just a few days ago, praising South Korean democracy and rule of law for bringing justice to the head of the company that contributes one fifth of South Korean GDP...
Precisely. For poor families, things like buying the train tickets or a car to be even able to get there, being able to pay for the accommodation and other resources, can already be a challenge.
I was struggling to pay for my train rides and my accommodation here in Europe, even without paying any University fees. I couldn't count on my parents to support me financially.
My thoughts exactly. I once supported Wikileaks seeing it as a potentially powerful weapon against the high and mighty; Bankers, corrupt politicians, lobbyists, police states... But for some reason Wikileaks decided to target almost exclusively the United States, now even helping a political liability like Trump into power, playing into the hands of countries like Russia and China - enemies of freedoms and human rights.
These days 45% of Slashdotters are right-wing nutjobs. 45% are liberal crybabies. 9.999999% are self-conscious virgins and 0.000001% is me. I'm just awesome.
I'm less sympathetic towards Snowden because he fled first to China and then to Russia. Countries that can be considered antagonist to many of the values the West holds dear, freedoms, democracy, human rights. How hypocritical is that to denounce the USA for spying on citizens but then looking for refuge in countries which are some of the worst offenders in terms of freedoms and democracy. This is very damaging also because by staying in those countries he is practically promoting them as safe havens for human rights activists, which couldn't be further away from the truth. He's a great propaganda tool for them.
Chelsea Manning on the other hand was trying to shine the light on war crimes perpetrated by US armed forces and the illegality and bad consequences of the war in Iraq. In my opinion, this was her moral duty. I totally agree with the pardon and the fact that the punishment was much too harsh.
Well, it's a great testament to South Korean democracy and rule of law that the head of the company who controls practically a fifth of South Korea's GDP and the head of state can be brought to justice.
I think the problem is, every year you have tens of thousands of new medicine and biotech students needing to write their thesis or doctorate about something. They research just one of the many moving parts, since they only have a limited time, and by cherry picking the results that fit with whatever it is they are trying to prove, they can pretty much get any result they want. Then they have to defend their work in front of their peers, so they obviously want to make it look as good as possible. Therefore every new research is presented as if it's a groundbreaking achievement, a few news outlets get impressed, pick up the story and it ends up on Slashdot.
'Developed a Clear Preference' For Trump? Wow, I never thought the US people and Putin could have so much in common.
The US people who where influenced by the DC Leaks and all the right wing nonsense and fake news perpetrated by Russian hackers, propaganda and useful idiots like Breitbart.
Can these Anonymous Russian trolls that are trying to ridicule the real problem of fake news and the Russian propaganda war against western democracy and our free press kindly fuck off.
I am really appalled at how many people don't take the Russian interference seriously and blame it on some kind of Democrat/Obama conspiracy. This has been happening in eastern European countries for decades and Russia has now been targeting also western Europe since the annexation of Crimea and the war in Ukraine. Russia is funding right-wing populist parties and helping them out with propaganda all across the western hemisphere in an attempt to discredit our democracies and our free press.
It's really scary how much success they are having in sowing distrust in our institutions and our free press. Every time I read someone here decrying some mayor western news outlet as "Fake News" I am reminded of the effectiveness of Putins troll army.
Also, the symbolic atomic clock is not just about nuclear annihilation. It also considers other threats to humanity as a whole, such as climate change. You are paranoid. The 1984 thing was a camera in the house, ready to broadcast everything you do. There's one of those on your laptop and smartphone.
How nice of you to bring that site up. Lets compare Obamas record
http://www.politifact.com/pers...
With that of Trump so far:
http://www.politifact.com/pers...
Obama: 48% True or Mostly True vs 16% for Trump
Obama: 26% Mostly False or worse, vs 70% for Trump
Just as it's a fact that an American Ambassador was murdered under Hillary Clinton's watch.
And 2000 Americans where murdered in the WTC under George W. Bush's watch. What's your point?
Yes, I agree with what you say and cherry picking facts is a very serious concern. This is also frequently used by climate change deniers. What do you mean it's getting warmer? Sad!
