I grew up with animals, mostly dogs, practically all my life. Always at least one, sometimes three. Apart from being the most loyal and loving companions you can hope for, it seems they actually did something for me in return. I do have zero allergies.
Maybe you are right. But it probably depends on where you live. If you live out in the country or an unstable neighborhood, the odds of "good gun use" are probably favorable. But I think those odds might turn against you if you live in a good neighborhood in an urbanized area, where the chances of break-ins are very low to begin with.
I am in favor of tougher gun laws and a strong critic of U.S. gun culture. But I understand the desire to defend yourself in rural areas. I don't think I'd ever feel completely comfortable with a gun in my home, but I suppose I would actually prefer owning a gun to being completely helpless, if I lived in an isolated spot out in the country. I think the gun law dispute in the U.S. is too one dimensional. Urbanized areas would probably be much better off with strict gun controls, whereas owning a gun in a rural area is a legitimate necessity. I wonder why I never hear about this distinction when gun laws are debated.
What are the chances of you having to use your gun and successfully defending yourself and your family...
vs. someone else using the available gun in your home to cause harm to yourself and your family. or some sneaky kids in your home causing an accident with a deadly weapon. or some otherwise harmless burglar/intruder killing you out of fear of the gun in your hand.
I would really like to know. Me, I could not feel completely safe with a deadly weapon inside of my home. Unless I lived alone, perhaps.
...the conditions for life to appear have been orders of magnitudes better than on Mars. Lower radiation due to an atmosphere, warmer but not too warm, less toxic chemicals on the surface, and covered mostly with oceans.
For Earth-Life, yes. Now for hypothetical extraterrestrial life on the other hand...
I wonder, when astronomers say 11 times the size of Jupiter, does that mean 11 times the radius, the mass, or that you could fill the sphere of its volume with 11 jupiters? Or the circle area as seen from earth?
Nelson Mandela is a larger-than-life figure. The true hero, that sacrifices his life and gives all of his energy for a cause. He may not always have resorted to peaceful means, but when your opponents will not listen to reason and only speak the language of violence, the temptation to fight fire with fire runs high. Despite losing friends, witnessing the mercilessness and brutality of a police state and being treated less than human, he transitioned the unjust, abusive apartheid regime of South Africa into a free democracy for all. South Africa is still a troubled country. But this is the product of decades of apartheid, that has created a huge divide between the rich and the poor, and ignoring the education and integration of most of its population. With these foundations, it is no wonder that poverty and crime still pose a huge challenge to South African society.
Nelson Mandela has done more than his part, much more than can be expected from a single lifetime. Rest in peace.
This is weird news. ID and John Carmack have been practically synonymous all my life. This can't have been an easy decision. ID is the company he created, built from the ground up. There is heart and soul there. But I guess you have to know when to stop. Now the deal with Bethesda makes a lot more sense. I suppose he wanted to leave the company secured and in good hands before making his exit move.
I am a little saddened of seeing another bit of my childhood gaming culture fading away (Origin, Lucas Arts, ID without Carmack...) but on the other hand I'm excited about JC finding more time to work with VR tech, which undoubtedly will be the next great step forward, a long time coming since games became 3D.
Norway doesn't have any warriors. That was a long time ago in the age of blood and glory. Today Norway's army consists of young boys, bored out of there minds that can't wait to get back home, sit in the couch to play Call of Duty and enjoy the highest standard of living in the world.
No kidding. Every time I post a comment here on/. voicing my opinion about nuclear power being inherently unsafe, two guys are on top of me, praising the virtues of nuclear energy and calling me out for the clueless hippie liberal that I am.
I've never had a hard drive fail on me, across 5 PC generations. I booted my old 486 a few months ago, one last time before disposing on it. Also no failure after...21 years. Maybe I just got lucky though.
I think the most problematic thing about regarding the movie as "satire" is that there is a very positive outcome for almost all of the protagonists. So there is a quasi fascist state and militarism is celebrated - who cares? At the end the main protagonist is a hero, the evil bugs are defeated and humanity is saved. So, it's all good.
I'm not sure satire "works" if most of the people whose views are being satirized in the film like it and think it's cool. And if most other people with different views also like it and think it's cool. Doesn't this effect promote these views rather than being a 'funny critique' as was perhaps intended?
It's because men are at a severe disadvantage in cognitive ability to women, so we are having separate tournaments to "protect" women from sexist assholes to camouflage that stain on our greatness and otherwise supreme superiority. Now stop asking questions. Thank you very much.
Back off newbie. SC, as everyone knows, officially stands for "Star Control", since 1990 and exactly up to the point at which Star Citizen is released.
However, I came to realize that my claim about Crysis being dead is a little ironic, considering that SC is based on CryEngine 4.:D
I didn't check out the Hangar Module myself, my PC is not up to it. But the videos they have floating around do look mighty impressive. Look at the massively detailed cockpits and the realistically moving parts on the ships. Obviously, it's still in development, but the features they are promising, like walking around your own spaceship or walking inside a capital ship and being able to look through a window and watch the battle taking place outside, there is nothing like it at the moment. And it will take a lot of horsepower. Most games have you either walking around interiors or flying around exteriors. SC intends to have both at the same time. Sounds fantastic to me.

Or, you could use Damnatio memoriae.
Check out DoomRL for a rougelike Doom experience. It works surprisingly well.

Interesting post on politfact on the topic
I hope you are mentally stable. :)

vioalte one out of seven... seven deadly sins...
I really shouldn't post on Slashdot after 16 hours of straight coding.
Three out of 10 commandments violate one out of ten deadly sins.
Whooops. Yes, sorry. See comment below. :(

The Land of the Free does not arrest people. It invites them to a holiday island to play a game of heretics and inquisitors.
Actually, they can and they do.

Okay. But if the medium is not clear enough for the viewer to distinguish satire from propaganda, it ends up being propaganda.
"whereas the liberal biased media sources are so common..."
Yeah. I suppose that's because reality has a "liberal bias"....
