    Making and drinking beer was extremely common in the ancient world - the Water was often full of parasites and disease and the process of turning water into beer killed most of them, this was "Small Beer" i.e. with a very low alcohol content, and everybody drank it rather than water ....

    In the ancient near east they drank Honey Beer (Mead) which is also slightly anti-biotic .....

    Empirical - If you do this it does that, it doesn't matter why

    Chewing willow bark can ease toothache, but most of the Willow bark is unnecessary it's just the salicylic acid that does the job ...

    Beer : contains alcohol - which kills many water borne pathogens, is made by boiling water, which kills most of the rest

    Medieval Europe and colonial North America drank large amounts of "Small Beer" Low alcohol beer, instead of water for precisely this reason, it was simply but very effectively abiotic

    All the Nubian's added to this was that they stumbled across an ingredient that made it anti-biotic as well...

    In the Ancient Near-East (Sumeria/Babylon etc) they drank Mead - Honey beer that is also anti-biotic ....

    The UK system is sensible ....

    Instead of the customer suing Sony and having to wait months if not years for a resolution, and having to involve lawyers etc .... they pester the people they bought it from, who then can band together and hassle Sony ...

    Who is Sony going to listen to, a small band of customers who are suing them, or a group of retailers, some of whom some of their best customers ?

    The UK and European still holds Sony accountable, but stops each customer having to approach Sony and then sue them individulaly ...

    Note customers have got refunds or partial refunds from some retailers already under this system .... whereas in Australia Sony does not have to pay anything?...

    The USA has 0.75% of it's population in prison (and growing)

    These people are often used as cheap labour in prisons

    Prisons are generally considered unmanageable, contraband of all types is freely available and discipline is poor at best

    When was slavery abolished in the US ?

          PCIe
          SATA
          FireWire

    USB3 is only likely to replace FireWire .... maybe ?

    So 4 to 3 ....

          RS232 - Open standard
          SCSI - Standard - No Pins
          PCI - Standard
          IEEE 1284/Parallel - Standard
          FireWire - When available - Standard - No Pins

    Where were all these non-standard proprietary connectors ...?

          And is it just me or are many of these still around because USB2 does not replace them ...and USB 3 won't either ?

    I live in the UK, I am 2 degrees off the meridian, It is summertime so we are on BST - So at noon the sun is 1:08:00 away from being overhead .. a few seconds is largely irrelevant at this point ...

    Gun crime in the UK is going down .. not up

    Knife Crime is steady

    Guns are hard to get hold of (relatively) for anyone, and anyone buying or selling any weapon is very strictly controlled so all other guns are obviously illegal, anyone with a gun in public who is not in uniform is instantly reported to the police, and there will be a massive armed police response deadly force is almost always used

    Criminals know that
    a) most people do not have guns, so they don't need one to overpower them
    b) if they carry a gun then they are more likely to get caught (police take gun crime very seriously), and when they do the punishment will be much tougher

    Knives are a problem but not as much as people think ...

    The old phrase if you ban weapons then only the criminal will have weapons, is true but that makes them easier to spot, and a mugging is a statistic and will probably be followed up if the police have time, a mugging with a gun *will* be followed up and the gunman hunted down .... criminals know this and so only use guns where they have to (or if they are naive)

          C is potentially faster and lower level than C++ - C++ is higher level and easier to code
          Perl is potentially faster and lower level than Python, Python is higher level and easier to code
          Java is slower and mostly a superset of dalvik, dalvik is the same level and much the same to code ...syntaxically -> syntactically ...Sarcasm ignoring mode off

    Flash is for Flash Video - Will soon (Hopefully) be redundant

    Silverlight is for .....we nothing really

    Both are blocked on all my browsers, Flash with Flashblock so I can play video when I want, Silverlight by not installing it ...

    Games are better played on the PC not in a browser, and I would not trust Silverlight with a Windows Machine, and it does not work properly on any other

    It's three ... there are three tectonic plates North American, South American and a separate caribvean plate

    It depends how you define continent ...
        Is India a continent (it has it's own plate), or sub-continent ?

    BTW Europe is a region, Eurasia is the continent and always has been

    And strictly speaking half of Iceland is in North America not Europe/Eurasia

    It's likely to cost much more than a real keyboard,

    Be slower than a real keyboard,

    Cannot be touchtyped (no feedback)

    So all the downsides of a touchscreen interface with none of the advantages ....

    The Optimus keyboard had the right idea - real keyboard with reconfigurable labels ,,,,

    Flouride won't whiten your teeth... it will protect them (in small doses) but avoiding foods that stain your teeth and brushing will keep them white ...

    Us Brits have flouride in our water too ...

    Infringing a Trademark - Passing your product off as someone elses, or connected to someone elses

    Infringing Copyright - Copying a complete or partial work without the artists permission

    Infringing Patent - Using a design for an invention without paying the patentor

    Trademarks don't protect inventors they protect company image

    Copyright doesn't protect inventors, it protects artists works ...

    I was doing Elementary Algebra with solving equations for 'x' from the age of 11 ~ USA Grade 6 .... ...Your Ninth grade would be the equivalent of the start of GCSE's ...beginning of learning for the final exams ..far far too late

    The new hard things we did at this time was Calculus, Boolean algebra, Set theory, and different bases etc ... most of which could not be taught without algebra ....

          America is a continent
          US is the short name of several current countries (which are united states)

          You are Americans, but so are Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians etc ...
          You are Citizens of the United States of American (or USA)

          But USAian is an Ugly name

    The problem is you can use this argument again and again to stop all exploration of any kind

    What sending people does is make more people interested in space ..

    If you wait until we have spare money to do this, you will be waiting forever. We currently spend money on much less worthwhile projects, space travel and exploration is one way we can survive any ecological crisis

    Hybrids have their place, as do electrics, as do pure gas...

    Short commute - Electric (until they improve the range)

    Town driving over the range of electric - Hybrid
          - which is why the taxi's use them, large mileage at low speed/stopped

    Long distance cruising - Hybrid

    Power (for hauling, large loads) - Gas
          - Hybrids just don't have the power, or if they do they are not acting as a hybrid often enough to justify it

    But all these are for a "proper" hybrid, where the engine works in parallel with the electric (as in the Prius) not just to charge the batteries (as the Volt does)

    The engine in the Volt is a dead weight in town, does not help at all, it only cuts in on long journeys where you are pushing beyond the range, so it runs the gas engine not where is is most efficient to do so but where it needs to, the Prius uses the most efficient engine at any time, cruising at highways speeds will hardly any fuel ...

    Go and see any interview of any astronaut no matter what they did in space they get the usual, "what did you do up there" as a matter of form but most of the time is spent asking "what did it feel like to be in space", "how did you feel when that happened" or similar

    The astronauts do not go to do science or explore, robots can do that better more reliably, cheaper, and we don't need to get them back, astronauts go to experience it ...

    If your drive to work and back is nearly 40 miles ... don't buy a electric or hybrid city car, it's not designed for it

    If your drive to work and back is 10 miles this is ideal and will save you money regardless of tax breaks

    If you regulary do journeys of hundreds of miles, get an appropriate car, at the moment this is a car with a conventional engine
