    The reason people used it to watch the Olympics and the Democratic convention - there was no alternative

    If people had the choice - Silverlight or Flash video then 99% of people would have used Flash, simply because they already had it ... the people who installed Silverlight to watch these will probably never use it again (until they need to watch something else that is Silverlight only)

    There is no advantage to the user to use Silverlight (I already have Flash)
    There is no advantage to Marketing to use Silverlight (Downloading a player is annoying...)
    There is an advantage to developers who already use .NET - But streaming Video is something developers do once? and the other stuff is not something that should be done in Flash or Silverlight?

    Flash seems to get used for
        Video - Will hopefully be made obsolete and folded into the browsers
        Animation - See above
        Intro Screens - The staple of corporate websites (see above)

    Silverlight seems to be a solution chasing a problem that shouldn't exist?

    Windows (2000/XP/Vista), Mac OS 9/X, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, Pocket PC, OS/2, QNX, Symbian, Palm OS, BeOS, and IRIX).

    Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Safari, Opera, SeaMonkey

    And is already installed on ~98% of systems

    The difference between Chemistry/Physics/BioScience and medicine is that it is (given the equipment) easy to reproduce the experiment, but a medical trial will cost a lot, and you will get a spread of results which needs interpreting ...

    It was easy to refute Cold fusion because many people attempted the experiment and it didn't work ...conclusion it was bad science

    It is hard to refute Bad medical science because no-one is willing to repeat the study, but if it really does not work it *will* get uncovered eventually, this is what he is finding ....

    The difference (a small one but...) is that the 10 different cameras in the UK are on 10 different systems and are not linked to a central database (yet) and the Police need a warrant to get the tapes, and the pictures are not linked to you (through an ID)

    In the US try walking into any store and you are likely to be on Camera, the only difference in the UK is that you are probably on Camera on the street outside as well ...

    In a Cybercafe in the UK all they could prove is that someone with their face obscured walked into the Cybercafe and paid cash, then (if they really wanted to) know which sites you visited (unless the first one is an anonomizing proxy)... in China they know who did what and can link an ID to a clear picture of a face

    300mpg - and then they compare it to a Prius ...

      The Prius can transport your whole family - this cannot

    They quote the Prius as the exemplar of low drag coefficient - but most small cars have a lower drag coefficient than the prius, and better fuel economy and can still carry 4 people!

    This car is very pretty and fuel efficient - but not a practical proposition for most people (and people who buy SUV's will never even consider it ...)

    Zip the file with a random tiny text file and the file is different from the unzipped file and from a file just zipped and the hash is different ... ... isn't this how most torrent files are now?

    So all torrents are already immune to this ?

    But conversely learning a new language and using it *as well* as the exiting established languages to supplement their shortcomings is very productive

    Also learning a new language even if you never use it on a project may change the way you program in your existing languages ....

    Considering I can't play the game because my video card does not support it, and don't have DirectX10 then DRM is irrelevant since I haven't bought the game

    I was put off gaming when they started to demand new hardware for every game ... Newer Faster Prettier - Requires graphics card that came out yesterday

    It's a game! If I have to spend more than 10 minutes getting it to run it is not worth playing? Or it had better be the game of the decade and actually worth the inflated price I paid for it ...

    Exchange was never meant to be an Internet mail server at all - this is why it is so bad at it e.g. email outside the system is very limited in comparison with internal messages

    It was designed to be (and still is) a corporate messaging and collaboration system, internet email was bolted on and is still (apparently) an afterthought

    Webmail is only to be used if you cannot connect to the network and use a proper client (Outlook), it is a stopgap and is not intended to be the normal interface

    I stand corrected, But maybe Microsoft should go into advertising .... when I learn about an update, not from Microsoft Update, not from and automatic update, or even Office but from /. ..... .. Now I will have to lie when I tell people "I can't open it can you resend it in the old format" ...

    Most music nowadays is designed to sound better when played loud - so people play it loud ....

    Headphones that are either noise cancelling or block outside noise are usually used a lower volumes - these should be supplied as standard (rather than the cheapest)

    Many players did at one time come with limiters - the most often complained about problem with them was "It's too quiet, how do I turn it off ...", because the people using them had got used to loud music (or had already damaged their hearing)

    Ah OOXML support - So now even though I have licences for 4 different versions of MS Office I can now only read the documents people send me, by using a free program..... don't you just love Microsoft ....

    It's just that the best known device with a non-removable battery is the iPod and the next best known is the iPhone ...

    My MP3 Player has a removable battery so does every phone I have ever owned, come to think about it I cannot think of a single battery powered device I have every used that the battery could not be removed (a few had warranty void stickers...) except the iPhone and iPod !

    Removable batteries mean that if the battery life is shorter than the product life it can be replaced rather than filling a tip with a working device, sending back to manufacturer for a fee when you can get a new one instead (newer, more features) is not usually considered except because the iPos and iPhones batteries were so rubbish (I know several people who have had multiple iPos batteries, in the same time mine is still fine ...)

    The interface that Apple paid USD $100 million to Creative to licence the use of it's patented interface technologies ...

    This is why I have a Creative Zen ...cost less, does more, lasts longer than the equivalent iPod, and the interface I think is better ....

    So just nice styling then ....

    The copyright to Happy Birthday is not owned by the original author ..not by the new words author ..but by Warner Music Group

    due to expire in 2030 (US) 2016 (Europe) currently estimated to be worth US$5 million

    and is a good example of copyright that is largely ignored by the general public ...

    You can in the UK .... it's only in the good ol' US of A that companies can charge for freely available information ...

    The only limited systems in the UK are Virgin and Sky .. both are encoded and so you can only use their systems forget listings even the programs cannot be recorded except on their own systems ... but the listings are still free....

    ...and was patented by David Rafner of Honeywell, before TiVO existed .... ...or you could get a PC based PVR and pay nothing for a tivo alike with more features no restrictions and nor subscription required?
