An invention is a new composition, device, or process. Discovery is the finding of something that already existed, or finding something by accident. Many inventions are based on discoveries (i.e. microwave cooking). I think the real issue is whether the non-obviousness requirement is applied too loosely to software.

If the only learning options we present students by high school are "Introduction to Computers" and beginner programming languages, then we are only catering to the uninitiated and lowest common denominator. Schools need to raise the bar for all students, parents need to be more present and supportive of their kids, school boards need to be eliminated of corruption, and kids need to stop bullying and acting like a bunch of wannabe gangsters.

While on the subject of improvement in schools, I think high school needs to be reformatted. By the time students reach higher learning institutions, they do not have any experience in a lecture hall taking notes. It is no surprise that they adapt very poorly when thrown into a class with 400 students.

Hand raising is also ridiculous for both high school and college students. Students should be learning when it is appropriate to speak and to respectfully communicate like adults without having to raise hands. I can't help but wonder if this poor foundation is why all of my conference calls are complete chaos.

The people in TN were VERY polite and more than willing to stop and help a stranger, something you are less likely to encounter on the west coast.

Not sure which part of TN you are talking about, but Memphis is a ghetto and hospitality is on the decline in a big way. Between the angry old people and sociopaths, judgemental and hypocritical bible pounders, macho rednecks, gangs and thugs, yuppies and their entitled brat kids, Memphis is just a big cesspool of phony idiots filled with intoxicants and hate. The economy has made things so much worse. Want to be a victim of crime or murder? Memphis is definitely one of the very best places in the U.S. to be! See the startling statistics We are currently safer than 2% of cities in the U.S.

Also, no one ever seemed to be in a hurry down there.

Having recently spent some time in California, we remarked at how incredibly sane the Cali traffic was. We got the idea that everyone knew it was congested and just drove along. In Memphis, people pass you up in the on ramps and emergency lanes, never signal and generally drive like complete idiots. You will be regularly cut off by someone at least once every couple of minutes, even outside of rush hour. Every traffic stop has some jackelope ready to drag race you in his ford mustang or pickup truck. Local radio often runs jokes about how bad Memphis drivers are and local news runs disturbing segments about it. Given that the loss of a job now can be a curse of death, people are literally killing each other to get to work on time and nothing is being done to stop it. That is why the Memphis news is always talking about some idiots plowing through school zones and mowing down kids in neighborhoods and killing them all the time.

Mugshots are already public domain, so I can only suspect this is just for publicity. They are trying to make it look like a lot of cops are doing something more than showing up after crimes to file a report, falling asleep in their patrol cars on the side of the road, talking on cell phones, causing wrecks (had to throw this one in there since I've been rear ended by one), beating up old people, harassing and beating up kids, racial profiling, ambushing people on a dark lonely roads for minor traffic violations like driving 3 over the limit, engaging in illegal activities, etc. There are many good cops out there, but it seems to be overshadowed by all of the negative, and made cheap by all the publicity stunts such as taking criminals from jail and parading them down the street for the press and then bringing them back.
