A computer is still an investment, even fo you. Just because upgrading wouldn't be profitable doesn't mean having a computer isn't profitable for you. In a world where most people are still utilizing 32 bit OS's this card will only be a waste of money. Think about it. You have the 2 gig of ram plus 2 gig of phsyical memory....there is your 4 gig max before you even turn on your machine.
People with only 2 gig of physical ram in thier machine are always crying they don't have enough memory....yet they're going to run to the store and pay how much?!? in order to ensure that if they put more than 2 gig into thier 32 bit system its competeley useless??
I personally have a 64 bit system, so this card in my system wouldn't hurt, but there are going to be TONS of people that get fucked by this 'advanced' technology....especially considering the fact that an application that would even make a dent in that 2 gigs of memory is far from being marketed and shipped out for home use.
For real, the only people that I can personally see getting anything out of this are people in the 3d field. Even if this thing isn't optimized for better performance, 2 gig will STILL help them work thru a complex scene with millions of polygons.
Excluding professionals, who would need 2gigs of memory on thier video card with the apps/games that are out right now....or the ones lined up for the nest 2-3 years?

sorry if that makes me sound anti MS....I'm not, I actually dual boot and love both windows and linux (probably more so linux though). It's just I've used blender now for about 3 years in freelance work. I find myself using blender mostly in linux because I get anywhere between 200-1000 more FPS for my 3d view in linux, and yeah I know those FPS aren't really visible, but when I start getting into complex scenes those overkill fps' spell the difference between 10fps and 40fps.
I've been doing 3d artwork for awhile now (started in maya, but now primarily stick to blender...its free! lol). I rarely ever have incentive to actually follow a project to finish, unless I'm being paid, so any system that makes it cheap for me to take my models from my screen to my hand is a definite must have in my book
Below the usability of xp? sorry that won't was. I haven't had a single issue with vista 64 sp1(besides it auto hiding folders which have no reason to be hidden). I can do anything and everything I did with xp....and faster, thanks to vistas "high" system req's.
I see a lot of fanboyism in most of these posts here. Mosst is completely unfounded (being jsut an opinion), and most come from inexperienced users. Sorry to tell you folks, you can't properly test (for the purpose of giving your personal opinion on it)an OS in less than 1 week. At teh most all you'll be able to talk about are the issues you had. Why? Because you never took the time to work around them. But I'm sure you all work around issues with your os of choice from time to time. The difference? You do it by choice. Anything done by choice usually doesn't get bitched and complained about (hence the obvious fanboyism prevailing here), because it was done by choice.
I finalized the order for my newegg parts......for a 780i striker II board and a 8800 sli. Man I wish I read about this first lol. I knew they were coming...I just expected later this year. Which is why I settled, because I wasn't planning on waiting. GRRR.
The answer to all your issues with having the keyboard unintuitive. Its called a gamepad. Just about any I can think of right now puts your controller to shame. Can you macro with that controller? Be contend hitting x 50 times in a row. I'll set that macro up on one key, hit it once, and grab a drink.
seriously..the keyboard bad for control? Yeah I can see that. But take, for isntance, my nostromo 52n....takes teh entire keyboard abd puts it literally in the palm of my hand. Now I have over 30 possible combinations of buttons/button presses.....all in my left hand. Hell I can even make that nostromo act as a mouse. Lets see you play your console game, well enough to not get frustrated by it, with only your left hand. Can't be done. I know a kid wiht cerebal paulsy (sp? lol i spelled it how it sounds) and he can only use the one hand....he's been doing it for about 10 years now, and I'd say even though he's a master at it....one hand...a controller...fun....nope.
Maybe we care more about having fun than about worrying about optimum input devices, highest possible mouse resolution, upgrading our video cards every 6 months, and so on. All to end up with a "gaming" PC that makes too much noise and crashes all the time (or is down for repairs).
I like to come home, flip on my 360, know it'll work (joke's on me I guess) and play games for an hour or two.. then put it away and go on with my life. It's nice to have a system that just does what it's supposed to do. The game makers know what hardware I'll be using and optimize the game for it. Perfect.

I've been a PC gamer since I was able to build one. I've never had a PC crash due to hardware issues. I've only seen the blue screen of death about 1 million times and EVERY time it had to do with the windows OS.
Flip it on and know it'll work? How bout that red ring of death? Or hey how about my PS2 that after 3 days of playing wouldn't even load a splash screen without being turned upside down and reset over and over again. I don't ever remember having to do that with any of my PC's.
As far as your issue with working with a comp all day and not wanting to when you get home, again, purely personal taste. I work a 15hr day working on one computer or another (gasp), and guess what? When I get home, the first thing I do after walking the dog is to plop my happy ass into my cushy italian leather desk chair and blast faces.
The only ligit issue you've presented was issues with hardware. Guess what. I put a months salary to the fact that probably had more to do with your stupidity than any software/hardware flaw. Point for that case- how many 680i or 780i striker boards have issues? Answer all of them! You know why people talk badly about those two models of motherboards? Because they don't have the technical capacity to understand how there IS a driver that will work, you just have to look. There will always be software issues. Same as there are issues with the software on the consoles (yet not one of you console players has fessed up to any of them yet). But the difference between a computer that has a non working gamepad and the same computer having the same gamepad working fine? The USER! User A (typical console gamer) gets frustrated. fucking gamepad doesn't work I hate PCs. While User B (typical hardcore gaming pc enthusiast) man...damn drivers I wish Belkin would hurry up and code up some work around to this....but in the mean time I'll use this third party software to run it fine.

Im not going to bother reading this. I read the summary. Coming from the field I find it important to inform others that when you're dealing with a digital signal hitting your TV your more than likely runningthru fiber opitcs at some point (same with most any other form of communictaion) and when you implement a tech that is still being studied....things will go wrong. Especially when that system is fragile. Fiber optics = very sensitive crap.
Same when dealing with any type of wave length. So you cell phones getting perfect reception in a thunder storm is nothing more than luck. Have the wrong type of cloud form (or move) between you and your signal source and you'll see that call drop/hear robotic type sounds/pretty much any call quality issue can be heard.
Simple and short is, we all demanded better quality service. And in an effort to appease the mass demand, the communications company pushed them out. We're no longer operating on copper wire alone...which is a very reliable mode of data transfer. We're dealing with things that can be affected by a simple change in weather, realize that, and stop screaming for more that 99.9 uptime. In ANY signal there is noise. The more noise, the less signal (obviously)....there is no 100% service. It isn't going to happen until we get better at working with this (still fairly new, relatively speaking) mode of transport. Even copper didn't have 100% uptime, it jsut had less problems, so this we used to have great service thoery most have is bullshit....you just didn't have enough knowledge to understand you WERE having problems....it just wasn't effecting you to a noticeable degree. A cut copper wire will still transmit data if the split ends are close enough...even if they aren't touching...just from the arc of the electricity. Fiber won't, satallites won't, antenna's........WON'T!

The mania (the up swing) and they're natural state. Same with people who only have the severe depression without the mania. Unfortunately, when people hear about ppl being bi polar, they automatically think sever depression and severe mania, because that's the most common "version" of manic depression. Not to many people are aware of the different forms of the "disease". But just like any other disease....some forms are acute and some are not...think about the differences in the various forms of cancer. Some tumors are life threatening and others are not..

The last equality symbol doesn't fit, though. Severe clinical depression is not bi-polar disorder... it might be a subset though. If you're severly clinically manic sometimes and severly clinically depressed other times, then you have manic-depression - which is the same as bipolar disorder as you pointed out. You can have server clinical depression without the mania and still have a form of manic depression. Hell you can just have the mania without the depression and STILL be classified bi-polar. There are many different types of "bi-polarism".

I agree with you, clinical depression is a very serious thing. I should know, I've been diagnosed as bipolar, manic-depressive, and, I quote "SEVERELY clinically depressed". To the point where I don't mention feelings to my doctors, cause they start asking me about razor blades and the like. I've tried the drugs -- believe me, I know what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about "Man, this is a crappy day" I'm talking about a never-ending, life long dysphoria with LIFE. I never knew about this study. but I've been on every type of medication from a to z. From the time I was about 6 everyone knew I was a bit off. Yhey figured it was just my intelligence at the very start. Then they started seeing the issues with authority, the issues in large groups, the lack of focus, and the destructive behavior. So they started with ADD and went from there. I've been clinically diagnosed manic depressive with acute paranoia since about the age of 15/18 (read late teens). I've been on anti depressants, but they never really did anything for me. Currently I only take mood stabilizers like lithium (600mg 2x's a day) and seroquel (400mg 2x's a day). I guess seroquel can be considered an anti depressant, but because it helps with both the up's and downs I don't consider it soley an anti depressant.

While I remember to post - the differences are generally just described nowadays as different "hats". Black hat (crackers), white hat (security experts and the like, paid or charity), and gray hat (curiosity). Anyone can give various meanings for these terms. The way I've heard it, and the way I explain it:
Black hat-tends to live on breaking into systems they have no right to be in, with no real interest in the outcome. This is the "hat" the media is often refering to when they describe hackers as cyber criminals. An example: someone that hacked into your bank account, no matter the reason for doing so, and would have no issues with posting that info on the net. if you're into D&D you'd be familiar with the term chaotic evil.
White hat-tends to live on following the rules. Only breaking into systems where they are testing security with permission. This type of hacker doesn't believe the info in your bank account is free for all and wouldn't even think about trying to view it....unless your bank asked them to. In d&d terms good.
Grey hat- tends to believe most information should be freely available to all, but they do have a that inner voice that tells them it very well may be teh wrong thing to do. So they have no issues (other than the legal worries) with cracking into a for profit company and distrubuting thier source codes. Most, if not all, of the illegal things they do are for personal benifit alone. They normally wouldn't think about giving out you're banking information on the net, if they had the interest in getting into it in the first place. In d&d terms chaotic neutral.

Point for that case- how many 680i or 780i striker boards have issues? Answer all of them! You know why people talk badly about those two models of motherboards? Because they don't have the technical capacity to understand how there IS a driver that will work, you just have to look. There will always be software issues. Same as there are issues with the software on the consoles (yet not one of you console players has fessed up to any of them yet). But the difference between a computer that has a non working gamepad and the same computer having the same gamepad working fine? The USER! User A (typical console gamer) gets frustrated. fucking gamepad doesn't work I hate PCs. While User B (typical hardcore gaming pc enthusiast) man...damn drivers I wish Belkin would hurry up and code up some work around to this....but in the mean time I'll use this third party software to run it fine.
Guess what. If you lack the technical know how....by all means proclaim consoles the king of the hill. But that same pc that your having issues with I'll have up and running fine with no worries. Don't sit here and pretend you have high tech knowledge, because its apparent you don't. You're complaining about drivers. Guess what? There is always a work around. If you can't find one....code it. If you can't code one....then you don't have the authority or the experience necessary to tell me that it's the computers fault your video card isn't working properly.

Same when dealing with any type of wave length. So you cell phones getting perfect reception in a thunder storm is nothing more than luck. Have the wrong type of cloud form (or move) between you and your signal source and you'll see that call drop/hear robotic type sounds/pretty much any call quality issue can be heard.
Simple and short is, we all demanded better quality service. And in an effort to appease the mass demand, the communications company pushed them out. We're no longer operating on copper wire alone...which is a very reliable mode of data transfer. We're dealing with things that can be affected by a simple change in weather, realize that, and stop screaming for more that 99.9 uptime. In ANY signal there is noise. The more noise, the less signal (obviously)....there is no 100% service. It isn't going to happen until we get better at working with this (still fairly new, relatively speaking) mode of transport. Even copper didn't have 100% uptime, it jsut had less problems, so this we used to have great service thoery most have is bullshit....you just didn't have enough knowledge to understand you WERE having problems....it just wasn't effecting you to a noticeable degree. A cut copper wire will still transmit data if the split ends are close enough...even if they aren't touching...just from the arc of the electricity. Fiber won't, satallites won't, antenna's........WON'T!

You hit the nail on the head. If anyone wants to know what it's like being bi polar.....they need to read you're description here....and they need to read it twice. Most of the time people have a hard time believing me when I tell them I could give a rats ass about myself, my wife, or my son. They assume there's no way I could be so disassociated with my emotions. To that I say what emotions? Half the time you see me with a smile on my face its because 2 sec later I was thinking about slitting your throat.....we could be best friends.....it doesnt matter....it doesn't stop these thoughts of hurting others. I'm just glad that most of these thoughts are directed internally with my hatred of the way I am. Hatred is the best descriptive word I can think of to describe this....remember people...no emotions. I'd have to say without a doubt, that you can take any manic depressive, drop him into a drama in hollywood....and he'd rock the socks off of you with his ability to fake any emotion........we have more practice than anyone else. We know how the emotions are supposed to make us feel becasue we see it all around us. We just don't feel them for the most part. If you've seen the Showtime series "Dexter".....you know what manic depression feels like....just think about all the times he's describing how he "feels" about a given situation. Manic depressives share the same disassociation with reality.
The thing is with manic depression (bi polar) there are 2 poles. If that person has the mania (the up swings) without the sever depression, they still have 2 poles. The mania (the up swing) and they're natural state. Same with people who only have the severe depression without the mania. Unfortunately, when people hear about ppl being bi polar, they automatically think sever depression and severe mania, because that's the most common "version" of manic depression. Not to many people are aware of the different forms of the "disease". But just like any other disease....some forms are acute and some are not...think about the differences in the various forms of cancer. Some tumors are life threatening and others are not..
Some how I think you don't know anything about what you're talking about....wait I do...cause you don't know me. And for proof of previous arguement (note I know how to spell argument I've done this to further annoy you) I would almost be willing to put money on the fact that you respond to this. But by doing that you'd prove me right....and would probably go against the natural instint everyone has (except for you right?) to argue there side of the arguement.

To everyone, or at least the person(s) that labeled me flamebait....before you do it again I'd suggest you do some research next time. There are about 5 different forms of manic depression each with about 3 different levels. Learn your shit before you start marking people down for flamebait. It's not my fault the kid that prompted my response (the one you labeled flamebait) is one of three things I said he is. So I'll say it again. He's either outright lying (a scream for attention in and of itself which would require attention), or he's being misinformed by his doctors (not all that uncommon), or he's trying to impress people that may not be informed of the issue he's describing by implying his disorder is actually 3 different things. Again....its like someone telling you they've taken both lsd AND acid....the same damn thing.
I never knew about this study. but I've been on every type of medication from a to z. From the time I was about 6 everyone knew I was a bit off. Yhey figured it was just my intelligence at the very start. Then they started seeing the issues with authority, the issues in large groups, the lack of focus, and the destructive behavior. So they started with ADD and went from there. I've been clinically diagnosed manic depressive with acute paranoia since about the age of 15/18 (read late teens). I've been on anti depressants, but they never really did anything for me. Currently I only take mood stabilizers like lithium (600mg 2x's a day) and seroquel (400mg 2x's a day). I guess seroquel can be considered an anti depressant, but because it helps with both the up's and downs I don't consider it soley an anti depressant.
NOTE-I'm not to up on this issue. I just know what I've heard in the news....which isn't much. I'm basing these thoughts on his actions and the fact that they're trying to use his way of thinking as a defense. Sorry, but just because you're in a league above most men doesn't mean you lack the potential for murder. Minority report anyone?

This is the "hat" the media is often refering to when they describe hackers as cyber criminals. An example: someone that hacked into your bank account, no matter the reason for doing so, and would have no issues with posting that info on the net. if you're into D&D you'd be familiar with the term chaotic evil.
White hat-tends to live on following the rules. Only breaking into systems where they are testing security with permission. This type of hacker doesn't believe the info in your bank account is free for all and wouldn't even think about trying to view it....unless your bank asked them to. In d&d terms good.
Grey hat- tends to believe most information should be freely available to all, but they do have a that inner voice that tells them it very well may be teh wrong thing to do. So they have no issues (other than the legal worries) with cracking into a for profit company and distrubuting thier source codes. Most, if not all, of the illegal things they do are for personal benifit alone. They normally wouldn't think about giving out you're banking information on the net, if they had the interest in getting into it in the first place. In d&d terms chaotic neutral.

I suggest you read up on Einstein thoughts about energy before spitting out that if the universe is to make sense at all then it works according to symmetries of logic and reason. Unfortunately there is no absolute, no one way to do anything/arrive anywhere. That one way just doesn't exist. It is in the minds of book taught book preaching scientists where this "one way" exists.. Remeber the matrix....there is no spoon? Same logic...different application....and the one from the matrix is bull lol. You're limiting your thought by relying on books to provide you the answer's to life and I'll show you how thinking in that box (the book), no matter the results is fallible from the start. With your paper towel experiment I can produce different results each time by simply inserting a screen with 2-3 holes the exact size of the marbles. Put 10 in and shake it..maybe 3 come out...maybe 4 come out...maybe none come out...shit maybe you get lucky and all come out, but at no point in time during that entire experiment would I have to change anything. There is no absolute, besides absolute bs....but even that isn't absolute as you can always find truth in almost any statement if you look for it hard enough.
I've not read the article...nor do I plan to. The idea of robot ethics is only good at the onset of robot usage in war. Noone wants to see thier soldiers sloaghtered by a machine, so the minute they can they're putting robots in as well, in which case robot ethics are compoletly pointless because the present geneva convention makes no rules regarding the destruction of artificial life forms. Matter of fact it only defends ppl like medics, pow's, unarmed combatants, and civilians, along with some other situation dependant confrontations
