I did this at my brothers company too. I thought that the program "ran on minimal resources" while the computers were being used. But shortly after installing them on a dozen programs, everyone was complaining about how slow their computers were, so I had to covertly remove them to hide the true reason why they were slow. Lesson learned. At least it didn't cost me my job.
Thank you! I was coming here to say pretty much the same thing. Why bother pushing for a new system at this point? So a next system has more processing power and ram, so what? Are games today more fun than they were 4 years ago because the graphics are better? Would the next call of duty REALLY be that much better if it was rendered in 1080p instead of 720p? Innovation and quality design makes good games.
I lived in Utah for 27 years. Sometimes the prevailing "think of the children" attitude gets out of hand, but some politicians are actually quite thoughtful. Governor Jon Huntsman and DA Mark Shurtleff are two good examples of metered, thoughtful politicians. But yeah, a lot of them are douches, especially Orrin Hatch...
Landmines explode in either direction. I think it's more like the metal spikes coming out of the ground when you try to drive out of a parking garage without paying.
What's even funnier is that the USPSTF has recommended AGAINST random PSA screening in individuals who are not already high risk (above 50, history of family prostate cancer) due to low positive predictive value and high false positive rates. The reasoning is that since you are more likely to get a false positive if you are not high risk, you will then spend unnecessary money on treatment, procedures (including biopsies which can put you at additional risk, AND if caught early they haven't been shown to increase your lifespan. I.E. Prostate cancer caught early is as treatable as prostate cancer caught later when true symptoms show up.
Just an FYI if anyone cares.
I appreciate the ad hominem, but as an LDS member who served my mission in Baltimore, I was surprised just HOW MANY LDS people work for the government. In fact, the CIA goes out of its way to recruit from BYU and Utah in general because many of them have clean background records and also speak another language (I can prove this quite easily, as I have about 4 friends who were recruited by the CIA right out of BYU). In Silver Springs, MD the congregation I worked in, about 50% of the people worked for the NSA.
So just an FYI, the whole "Mormons have a problems with the Feds" is bullcrap. They may have been true 100 years ago, not now.
So I have a curious question, are there any circumstances where you can hit/kill a police officer in self-defense? For example, if a policeman was arresting you under false pretenses and using brutal force, could you strike back, or are you required to take it under any and all circumstances?
Actually it's about 2/3 Mormon, and about half of those don't go to church. So your "effective Mormon" rate is about 1/3. Just an FYI. (Former recent resident of Utah)
Well I propose that we do with it what we did with penicillin in the 50's, and infuse it into livestock feed, thereby ending the battle against bacteria forever. FOREVER!
What I really hope they do is what they should have done with the PS3 in the first place.
I think that they made a huge mistake by not keeping the same architecture with the PS3 as the PS2. If had kept the same architecture, while only increasing the processor speed and the graphics chip (while still adding new opengl lighting and shading effects, etc.), they could have easily made the PS3 FORWARD compatible, like many of the Xbox games are. Not only that, but every developer on earth knows how to program for the PS2. That would have made it so easy for studios to continue designing games in the PS2 fashion, while simply increase polygon count and textures. I think that the familiarity with the system would really have given Sony equality to designing for the 360, which almost all developers say is easier because of Visual Studios as well as the rest of the developers tools that MS provides. Never underestimate familiarity
Example. You can render PS1 games on an old PC (hell my old PocketPC Dell axim could render PS1 games near full speed) at higher resolutions (like 1280x960) while getting rid of the boxiness of the textures, and the games look much better. The PS2 emulator for the PC (which only has a handful of games that run at full speed) can make some PS2 games look better than they did on the PS2, because it's rendered at a higher resolution. The PS3, if they had kept the same architecture as the PS2, could have EASILY upscaled EVERY PS2 game made, breathing new life into people library of old games. Who wouldn't want to replay god of war if the resolution was sharpened at 720p? Seriously, the upscaling the the PS3, (simple image anti-aliasing) doesn't really increase the picture quality much, if at all (some games actually look worse).
Anyways, they didn't do that, and I believe it was a huge mistake. However, I hope they rectify that mistake with the next generation, and make the PS4 FORWARD compatible with my PS3 games. Let me play my PS3 games upscaled at 1080p!. That would be great. I realize that the textures don't get sharper, and that the effects don't increase, but I feel that it would be easier to attract new customer and keep existing customers if they knew all their old games would continue to work forever, and would even look better than they did before!
My 2 cents. If someone who really knows about programming could explain how this idea isn't feasible/cost effective/a good idea, please explain.
That's funny, whenever I give people cash for presents, I refer to it as a "federal reserve gift card". The best part is, it never expires! Though I recommend spending it quick because it seems to lose its value over time....
I got a free midi cable from them and I didn't even buy world tour. I just got it because it was free and they didn't ask any verifiable questions. (and I have a clavinova, and now I can hook it up to my computer.)
Also, I still have a sour taste in my mouth after Activision blocked the patches for the guitar hero 3 controller to work in RB1. Activision have surpassed EA as being the worst game company. EA is at least trying new IP, where Activision keeps recycling the same shit every year. John Ritticello himself said, (I'm paraphrasing) "if you can't take a game, and change it up and release the sequel to it again every year, then we're not interested in it." Man, I hate Activision.
I won't buy any more Activion games unless I buy them used, cause I still have a bitter taste in my mouth after the we-deserve-compensation-for-our-guitars-to-work-in-rock-band for the PS3 debacle. Besides, I LOVE RB2. It's a nice improvement, they have way more downloadable songs to choose from, and since I import the songs from RB1 for only 5$ (55 songs) plug the 85 on the disc + the 20 free songs I just got last night + the 50 or so songs that I downloaded from my brothers PSN account, I have over 200 songs, which makes for a nice variety.
I'm pretty sure that Activision won't show such generosity.
Sure, I can now watch stuff on hulu and the shows on nbc.com and fox.com. It's actually kind of nice, especially since circumstances have required me to get rid of cable, and I REALLY miss watching the Daily Show and the Colbert Report at home, and now I watch them through my PS3 and it's really easy to do.
BTW, people complain that you can't fullscreen anything, which is true, but you can get around that by ZOOMING in, which makes it full screen, just FYI.
Sure thing. It'll probably be a few months. Long and short of it, the good news is that they think they might have found a few things that can prevent it, unfortunately there isn't much you can do post-onset. The summary is that there are certain types of anti-oxidants, that if received in a high enough dose, prior to damage, that the CNS would NOT fire the signals to the brain as much, and that the chronic pain would subside. (I don't recall the one of the specific one she mentioned, but I recall it having to do with a treatment for Parkinson's). There were 3 specific anti-oxidants that she spoke of in her research that were particular effective against the pain the is common among the elderly, although I don't recall which ones. Wait for the link.
One of the professors at my med school gave a presentation that these psychosomatic problems of fibromyalgia are anything but. She summed up her research showing what happens if you tie a string around the dorsal root of one of the spinal nerves (the sensory part) which caused incredible pain. The string dissolves in a few weeks and they measured how long it takes for the pain to subside. They would measure the pain by touching the paw of the rat with a very small probe to see how much pressure it would take before it would lift its foot (or the pain became too much). Even using the largest gauge (smallest probe) the rat would lift its paw, but gradually it would allow more pressure as time went on the the string dissolved.
The problem was in elderly rats, they found that the pain didn't go away after the string dissolved. On top of that, they found that even though there was nothing sending the signal to the spinal chord to signal pain, after the rats reached a certain age, the spinal chord would still continue to send the signals to the brain even though there was no original pain stimulus. I.E. The spinal chord was creating a pain stimulus without a cause. A dorsal rhizotomy didn't fix it, pain medication helped for a bit (but like all pain meds became ineffectual over time. People with fibromyalgia don't have pain because they depressed, if anything it's the other way around - they are depressed because they are often in agonizing pain.
The paper will be published pretty soon. I'll post a link later if anyone cares.
Well let me give you my personal experience about it. I have a relative named "David Hall." Pretty common name huh? Well he was put on the terror watch list years ago because there is a suspicious person named David Hall. He was able to determine that the person they were after was many years older, had a different birthdate, SSN, and even lived in a state he had never been in.
Since he flew a lot for work, the unfortunate consequence was being FULLY searched EVERY time he went through the airport. He finally called up the TSA once and told them, "How about I just come into your office. If I am your man, ARREST ME! If I'm not, then get me off of this list!" to which they responded, "I'm sorry sir, but it doesn't work that way."
All in all, it took him over 3 years to finally get his name off. I think the criteria for being on the terror watch list are pretty well summed up here:
-If you have the same name, initials or hair color as a felon, you're on the list.
-If you've ever lived withing a 5 mile radius of a felon, you're on the list.
-If you've ever flown on an airline that a terrorist has ever attacked before, you're on the list. and finally.
-If airport security is bored, you're on the list.
I can't even tell you how many websites I've given with my name as "My Balls" or "Your Mama" with a corresponding email address of myballs@myballs.com because I really don't need any more spam, nor did I have any desire to give away my real information. In fact, I don't have a myspace page, but had to get some images from a friends, so I had so sign up, which I think I used the name "Joe Mama." I didn't realize that doing so made me a hacking terrorist!
Isn't "overpriced" in the eye of the beholder? I'm glad I payed the 60$ for uncharted 2 and resistance 2. I got so many hours from those games.
No, I did set the priorities low, but it still ran really slow.
That's what I did, but the computers still ran at a crawl. The low priority didn't change that it ran REALLY slow.
Correction: I did this with FOLDING@home, not SETI. I think SETI isn't as useful.

Isn't it better when we all play nicely?

There must be an ulterior motive, because I heard President Bush didn't care about Black people.
Since he flew a lot for work, the unfortunate consequence was being FULLY searched EVERY time he went through the airport.
