Your comment just goes to show the measures which the unlearned, or ignorant will go through to get an iPhone that they can use. Same basic concept as the PSP hacks a while back, people want to do specific things with the hardware that they buy. If that functionality is unavailable, the masses will create it for themselves. The fact that they cannot get it right, and end up bricking their phones is both their own fault for doing something they do not fully understand, and Apples's fault for not providing a piece of hardware the way people want it.
"...I am suspecting a certain arogance and disconnect with the user base. "
Before you mod 'Troll', think about it. care to elaborate?
Most users of linux have had their wishes all but granted in recent years. I'm no expert but I've seen Linux move from a usable pseudo operating system, to a full fledged competitor. Users had complaints.
Wireless doesn't work... fixed that (mostly as far as I can tell) Can't connect to exchange server... fixed that too. not 100% but it's a decent start. Primitive GUI... fixed that one (I hate gnome, but it is pretty) Hardware/Driver Support... getting there, but that's mostly the manufacturers to blame, the support that is there is because the devs are reverse engineering the damn hardware. Application Support... there is the be all and end all. It is true that an OS is only as good as the software that will run on it. But chicken and egg, you need a decent enough user base before you can write the code, and the user's won't be around until you have the apps to run.
IMO, linux is not ready for full time mass deployment, but that is mostly because the vast majority of people are very very stupid. The same people who were having major issues with Win95 are the people that linux is not ready for. The vast majority of people have slowly adapted (slightly) to using a pc. Changing the way things work will only confuse them, but no more than moving from Win to Mac or Mac to Win environments.
It's a different way of doing things that the people object too.
There are some very slick, user friendly versions of linux out there, and the opposite is quite true. I think a few more development cycles and Noobuntu will be great for people like my parents, and maybe even my wife.
In the meantime, I call shenanigans on you for your obvious trolling.
Pretty sure any quality wireless router won't actually let you do wireless administration of the device. I know the Linksys box I have sitting on my desk requires you do be physically plugged in if you want to do any administration. that's usually a flag you can set. my router (linksys) is setup so that you can do wireless administration of the device.
And I also promote any process which _can_ lead to realization on the bully's part of what s/he has done to another human being. In some cases it works and I think it's worth it. Pain and humiliation will teach that bully a lesson that will never be taught by knowing what he did to another human being. Most bullies just need a fierce ass kicking from a peer.
Personally, I tended to get into a fight about once a year. It generally dropped the bullying level tremendously afterwards.
Bullies are bullies because they go after targets of opportunity; people that they see as weak. Make yourself not weak; or at least not worth it and they'll leave you alone. You've got a point, I was bullied up until about the 4th grade. When I hit the bully in the face with a brick. Broke his cheek, jaw and nose in one shot. He never bullied anyone again after that. And I was never bullied by anyone who had even heard the story.
3 or 4 years ago this was the case, if you had more than 1 AV installed it norton would sometimes report the other program as suspicious software. Very similar to ad aware and spybot of a couple years ago, 1 would always report the other as spyware and/or adware.
If I wouldn't do this to my competitors, why would you do it to a random stranger? You seem like a relatively decent and honest person. Others, not quite so much.
consider this scenario If I were to say pay someone $25 a day in cash to spend 3 hours "clicking ads" I could probably force a small company like yours out of business in just a few short weeks. Build a small business out of this process, charging local small companies to sabotage their competitors, and have someone in a small country where $25 is a fairly large amount of money and you have a fairly decent reason why.
As a businessman, you cannot assume the other guy is as honest as you are, and I would expect something like this process goes on thousands of times a day throughout the world. You have to decide if the advertisement is worth what you are paying.
It might not be the most honest business in the world, but I can think of other even worse things people are making money on, so I seriously doubt that it is not happening.
I'm not sure, nobody knows what they are planning to do. At least I don't. I have a pretty good idea that MS is not above an act like this. Especially considering some of the things they have already implemented in Vista.
I'm not hopping up on any soapbox, I'm not advocating "free" software, I'm not accusing anyone of anything.
I was merely stating the fact that informing technical people of possible shenanigans on the part of MS is not FUD, as the OP had suggested.
I'm simply saying that it is not FUD, it is a possibility, that the next service pack may include some kind of adware, and had I purchased Vista I would be pissed.
Fortunately, I use various Linux distro's and my wife uses XP. I probably will not ever have to see an ad from MS other than the one's in some of the trade magazines I read.
Ad sponsored software is one thing, but when I pay for a program and and updates to that program insert ads that I did not agree to view that is not acceptable. Opera didn't just one day start showing ads when there were none before. And ad sponsored software is usually free (beer) software. You cannot sell something, and then add ads to it with a service pack or update. That's just wrong, and informing us of it is not FUD.
Agreed that marketing people need to be shot. But maybe only in the leg. They do serve some purpose, even if they are total scum.
Think about it, if it weren't for some kind of marketing how would anyone know about anything?
Word of mouth? I don't think so. you can only get so many people talking about something they have never heard of, and you still have to get them to use it before they'll talk about it.
Taking only a non marketed approach would certainly get you a much smaller more community oriented group, but you would not have the full spectrum of users. You would have power users, and only power users. If things were that way, we'd still be in 1998 and then where would we (the linux community) be?
Somehow, I wonder if this isn't a glaring hole in the defensive (and possibly offensive) network of the US. We don't put up with civilian grade anywhere else in the military, so why the hell are the computer's all Dell's running Windows? That is a damn good question. But I have another, and it is probably the same question.
Why, do people who are otherwise extremely intelligent in almost all facets of their life suddenly forget which is the right and left buttons on their mouse. And why, when given explicit instructions do exactly the opposite when in front of a computer.
Vice Presidents of global corporations, experienced managers and district managers, supervisors, HR, Accounting, even the damn security guards. All either get it, or they don't.
People who make (relatively) important informed decision seem to suddenly not know how to read the damn screen. I work in support, I have people every single day who need me to help them change their password... On a windows XP box. Ok, so it's not immediately apparent. But when they hit the change password button and it asks for current, new, confirm new, THEY STILL NEED TO BE TOLD WHAT TO DO.
Ok, I use Linux, but that doesn't make a lot of sense...
Why is Windows Shared Source more vulnerable to this type of attack than Linux and other Open Source things? Simply put, With thousands of eyes that have many varying goals, any security vulnerability in an "open" sourced product would be reported to the correct people many times by many different users. Closed source projects on the other hand have very specific sets of eyes on them, with very specific goals. If a vulnerability was found it would be less likely to be reported.
Irresponsible companies? Let's talk Microsoft. How did the public respond to them? I believe it's called Linux... Not to troll, but how has that linux thing been going... oh yeah something like 8% marketshare. and thats a good thing. Not for nothing, but the response should be intervention. I'm all for the government not being involved where it doesn't have to be, but when the stakes are this high I think there should absolutely be bans against any kind of human tagging, being a requirement for anything.
The rovers are made of metal, while cher is made mostly of plastic. I would assume that metal would outlive plastic.
But then you have to think about the environment the two are in. The rovers are in a quite harsh environment while cher spends most of her time with sailors and bikers. not to mention friction burn. I'm just going to stop there.
Their position, as far as I could tell was downloading == stealing. whether you have purchased the music in another format is irrelevant.
That is the current position of the record labels, being enforced by the RIAA. The artists either don't care or are smart enough to hide behind the record labels so the hate and any backlash doesn't affect them.
You could also argue about deceptive marketing practices.
when a band puts out a good single, and their label encourages radio stations to play only that single. Many people will buy the album. what happens when the rest of the album sucks?
example. Finger11 has a single paralyzer. It's pretty rockin and has a nice beat. I decided to buy the album. It sucks balls, There is not 1 other good song. Had I been able to download, or at least listen to more of that album I probably would not have made the purchase. That is where their lost sales are coming from. Shitty product. Pre-packaged bubble gum garbage that they keep re releasing.
I happen to like music quite a lot. It has always been a huge part of my life. I support local music that I like, I also go to quite a few concerts every year. Between me and my wife I buy 2 or 3 new albums almost every month. But I've decided not to buy anything without a full test drive. I would like to know that the music I buy doesn't suck so I don't end up with 100 disks each with 1 song that I like.
I don't so I'll add an example of why you are correct.
Metallica.
I was a huge Metallica fan back in the day, bought all their good albums 2, 3, in the case of their first as many as 6 times. They stopped putting good albums out when I was in the 4th grade. (black album being good is debatable)
When I heard that they were going nuts about people downloading their music, I wondered to myself why would I pay for their music yet again to have it on yet another medium. I've already bought the tape, and when that wore out I bought it again. Then I had to get the cd to update my collection, and I certainly would want to update the music from one of my favorite bands. And now they want me to buy it again, just so I can play it on my computer.
fuck that. I'll download it and who cares what they think. and they lost me as a fan because of all the crap they pulled with napster. Probably doesn't help that they haven't put a good album out in something like 18 years.
I think you're right. With the RIAA and MPAA and all the other AA's (not you alcoholics, you guys are alright) taking the majority of the heat and bad publicity the average person isn't going to notice that it's the individual companies bringing the suits.
I have a Toshiba laptop, and quite frequently it is on my lap. I've noticed that it does get a bit hot at times, but never hot enough to cause discomfort...
well maybe after several hours, but if I'm staring at that screen for that long it's usually my eyes that hurt more than my legs.
My laptop is usually in its intended position, right on my lap. Just like my desktop is usually on or near my desk.
A notebook just doesn't sound right. I'll never call my computer a notebook.
Tell me about it. My work computer had the screen die, and since it was out of warranty, we had to send it in to get it replaced. Somehow in the process of fixing the screen, they managed to screw up the harddrive. Why would you send in the whole computer, when only the screen was dead. Unless it was a laptop, that may have been the stupidest thing you did all year.
well, there was that other thing, but we won't talk about that
I feel like I've never really known honest and open government in this country, and wonder if it ever actually existed. I'd certainly like to see it sometime before 2029. good luck with that.
I'm 28 and feel pretty much the same way you do, I have high hopes but low expectations.
They say you have to hit rock bottom before you can start to dig your way out. We might not be there yet, but Bush has another year it's possible the majority of Americans will get fed up with the system as it currently is and do something about it. But where is the alternative, you can either vote Republican or Democrat. When given the choice of two evils, how do you decide? You could always give a pity vote to a third party but that's not really a solution, unless more people would do it, but even then we'd need to get rid of the electoral college. wow this turned into a rant.
anyway, like I said, good luck with that open and honest government thing.
