well this isn't the MOST opposing view but ESR's text "the cathedral and the bazaar" does have some points to the failings of open source such as the possible inability to start a project in the bazaar/open source method.
hey now lets not forget that keanu reeves did one of gibson's movies. admittedly "Johny Mnemonic" wasn't all that good but thats not keanu's fault. i mean it was a dumb movie.
ok. nut, (kidding, I apologize about the name calling, you're right its juvenile but it got my dander up) you obviously know more about monopoly law than i do and have quite efectively picked apart my previous posts.
but (you knew that was coming) I am still concerned about the walmart buying consumers. to us (us being the/, reading geeky types) no microsoft is not a monopoly. I admit that I have a plethora of choices as to OS and I take advantage of that.
the average consumer (someone with no PC experience beyond knowing they exist and that they can help you balance your checkbook) knows only MS. they have never heard of Sun or linux or SGI or you name it. the only thing htey heard about linus is that bill gates calls it a virus. and they know to stay away from virii.
they do not know about findanisp.com (hell i didn't know about them till i read your link) and wouldn't know how to go about finding them if they even knew to look. (which in many cases they don't) MS has told them that they are the one true thing and they need no other. from the desktop MS is anticompetitve.
and an argument can be made that you don't see other brands telling people about the other guy in town but thats not totally true. commercials on tv though bad outhing their competitor at least admit they have one. MS doesn't even admit that they have a competitor unless compelled by congress do so. and don't say that those hearings alone mean that they have already admitted they have competitors because they don't really count. who do you know (other than me and other wierdos watch c-span?)
i didn't say that MCSEs don't know how to set up a new ISP i said that some of the ones that i know (that would be personal experience) don't know of many ISPs.
and to the last nut that said there are thousands of ISPs in america. where are they? I've seen thousands go down and get swallowed by earthlink, msn, aol but I don't see many still standing. in my hometown (hamton roads, va a bustling metropolis) i can think of two or three decent local ISPs. after that you hit nationwide coverage and you're back with aol msn earthlink. and i don't remember if microsoft was going to put links to anyone but msn on the desktop of new users.
and as for not having a monopoly last i heard they controlled a vast majority of the desktops in the US. well, if food lion (regional grocer) controlled as great a percentage of the grocery stores in the country as microsoft controls desktop space then i think someone would cry monopoly. so i feel perfectly fine calling MS a monopoly. at least food lion has decent prices.
i was listening to "the connection" on NPR a few years ago when they had the guys from l0pht on. they were pretty good at explaining their reasons for publishing exploits and i heartily agree. as others have said most companies will not make a fix until everyone knows there is a problem. microsoft should just get on the ball. someone finds a hole, they patch it and make a mea culpa. i jsut wish they would cut out the nonsense where they try to shift the blame. it doesn't work. making fixes does. microsoft would be such a better respected company if they would jsut lose some of their attitude and admit when they are wrong.
incidentally. this will proabably piss many folks off but i think i have a point.
Microsoft offices in reno were hit by anthrax. some scientist years ago figured out what anthrax was and how harful it could be. he told everybody. everybody did what they could to avoid anthrax and Bayer came up with cipro, a drug to fight anthrax.
so what the hell is microsoft saying? that we should have locked up the guy that figured out anthrax? and bayer for coming up with the fix?
geeze... that just seems fucked up. am i wrong?
(incidentally I'm certain I'll be hit with tons of responses telling me that yes i am wrong):)
I'm wondering where might the replacement come from? somone already in NASA or someone from outside NASA?
I have to vote for somone outside NASA that just grew up in love with star trek and can't get enough of this new fangled farscape thing. All I want is a space geek from outside NASA.
I think anyone inside NASA may be to beholden to the past and has already given up on Mars in his or her lifetime. someone from outside might not yet have their spirit broken and will wonder "well why haven't we" all the time. Then go about making it happen.
hey moron boy, you call AOL, Earthlink and MSN being a vast choice? wait till you install Windows XP and tell me how many choices you get if you're a first time user. the argument isn't that Microsoft is anti-competitive to geeks but that they are anti-competitive to people that buy computers at walmart.
of course I know that I can get net access from the local mom and pop. (in fact I just did yesterday) but I know people that are MCSEs that don't know they can use some other ISP even that they exist. Microsoft does have a monopoly and they are extending it by leaps and bounds with XP. Once everyone has XP installed do you think they'll buy Nero or Easy CD Creator? No of course not Microsoft has closed them out by including rudimentary cd-burning in the OS. thats not anti-competitive? then what the hell is? the list goes on and on. how can we stand by and just let this shit continue? how can you?
This seriously brings into consideration whether or not you have a soul.
I've been thinking about the length of time its taking to get to 1.0 and must admit that i have been critical of the dev process for Moz in the past but no more. it just occurred to me that one of the reasons that we've been so bitchy about how long its taking is the fact that development of Mozilla is taking place in the wide open. it was a daunting task when they began and it still is. there tons of closed projects that take years to get done but we never hear about them until they are done. we've been following moz from the beginning and so the whole thing seems to take longer than it should. maybe I'm just late figuring this out but i just wnated to make sure it was said.
seeing as there have been many posts claiming ignorance of who some of those people are (congrats for being mature enough to admit it) I have to say I'm damn proud that I know who all of thema re and I've only been using computers since i was 14. (which by/. standards is still considered a newbie in some circles. oh I'm 24 now.
i figure if palm spins off anymore we'll soon have a company that makes stylii and only stylii. needless, the idea of a separate palm OS company sounds promising
saw these on the 11:00 daily show last night. no worries. no chance in hell you could mistake these freaks for a cat. they look like animatronics from disneyland. they also appear to be sinister. I'm certain there's a plot behind it all.
all of these discussions about at&t, aol, comcast, etc... could all be moot. if aol wants to they could possibbly buy up all the lines they want if they just tell the gov that they'll install backdoors into all of their stuff. even more intrusive then what they already have. think how many users aol has now. nad isn't aol also col and bol as well?
i thought the idea of mozilla was to get a good browser. not an application platform. well, now i can adjust my expectations for mozilla. they can now take all the time they want. I'll just use the gecko engine.
also this seems like an unenforcable thing to begin with. not because there aren't ways to tell how a page was created but because there are so many people using MS products that disparage them as well. thats why they disparage them cause they are forced to use them. i just don't like the idea that these EULAs can be used to tell me how to do just about anything. if microsoft says that i have to wear plaid pants when using winME then what am i going to do? (I know use Linux) this is getting bizarre. i believe that the justice department needs to take a sliver away from the hunt for osama to bitchslap MS.
i know that alot of us have been looking forward to 3g advances and such forth. but uh the man did say we would have to put up with some changes until this mess is over with. personally i think what happened on 9-11 has changed american and the world in ways we can't even imagine. we are in for a long haul of trouble ahead and i am beginning to have doubts as to wether or not our generation will ever see peace again.
I don't care how smart they might think they are or how many thought experiments they may have done but this is not an experiment I want done on my planet. I'm thinking this kind of shit should be done a deep space probe on the opposite side of the galaxy. want to make a black hole? fine. do it very far away from me. as someone else pointed out we know nothing about black holes theres no way we should be making one. if the scientists want a challenge they can try and figure out why running water makes you want to pee. there are tons of other things they could research and test without putting the entire planet at risk. anyone ever seen the episodes of Lexx on earth? we're the type planet that always ends up blinking itself out of existence.
the sept. ish of max pc has a pretty interesting and informative article on the new formats and drives coming down the pike for dvd recording. I don't believe it's online at maximum pc but its on the newsstands and max pc is a pretty great mag. its their dream machine issue.
I love the speed bandwidth increases and the barrier breaking stuff but how compatibile will this be? I have a near useless maxtor ata-100 40gigger that on ocassion will run under winme/2k but not at all under linux. I should say the drive runs fine its the adapter card that runs like snot. when it runs is runs well but thats rare. the maxtor card is a rebranded promise tech card. i understand that with some tinkering one can get the card to run under linux but I don't want to tinker essential hardware to make it run. it just should. i expect hardships with video or sound hardware but not with a bloody ata card. sorry ranting to take my mind off things falling from the sky.
if you're wondering what you can do I have a couple of ideas for you.
1. give blood. the local red cross nationwide will be holding blood drives tomorrow if they haven't managed to start today. Don't bother going to the red cross site its attackdotted. just look up the red cross in your white pages. or go to the mall thats where my local is holding their drive tomorrow (thr first of many)
2. you can give money if you can't give blood. its easy too. I don't know about other places but hear in southeastern virginia you can go to Food Lion (local big box grocery store) at the register there are 1$, 3$, and 5$ coupons that can be scanned and add the amount to your bill. instantly you've given the red cross money to help.
I've already given my 5 bucks and tomorrow am heading for the mall to give blood. I suggest we all do the same.

nice to know that every once in a while a company actually listens to the consumer.
2020
somewhere on the web
today the mozilla group released 1.0 No one noticed. development of 1.0.1 will begin tomorrow. the expected completion date is 2075.
thats all i can say. i use enlightenment all the damn time and have been snapping at my bit to see it ready. the one thing that i love most about E is that it is as minimal or monstrous as i need it to be. the icon box alone was a stroke of genius. in my opinion anyway (which doesn't count for much)
