I disagree that thinking rationally and being Christian are mutually exclusive. Such a viewpoint to my mind is rather incomplete.
Just as atheists disagree when Christians generalize and lump them all into the same boat, I object when Christians are generalized about. Some of us have done the research. We have looked into the documents, the history, the archeology the meanings of the greek and hebrew words, the context(political and social) of the bible, even the History of the early church. When you do this, most people I know come to very different conclusions then both atheists and I am sad to say a lot of modern so called Christians. Things look very different when you do the actual research yourself, rather than trust arbitrary people, be it Dawkins, or the Pope.
That is interesting. However, it could also have been a strangely shaped model aircraft... There is a saying amoung model aircraft hobbyists, if you give anything enough power, it will fly... Even a brick. Though I have yet to see that one...
I'm not saying my explanation is the true one, but the problem with these things is it is very easy to raise reasonable doubt. Unfortunately the majority of skeptics consider reasonable doubt the same thing as disproof and therefore feel justified in dismissing things out of hand. Their loss I say.
Actually, I found mythbusters to be very light on science and have rather poor engineering, though perhaps I didn't give it much of a chance... I don't think we should hold up an entertainment show as an example of skepticism... They may be skeptics, but I'm unconvinced they are good skeptics...
That's what I was getting at yesterday. Nuclear would be fine as long as it was strictly regulated by a 3rd party uninterested in profits (read: the government). And even then you'd have to worry about some asshole inspector taking kickbacks not to notice the corner cutting.
Ummm... Yes. You really want to put a government run by bureaucracy in charge of a nuclear plant....?! And how exactly are governments uninterested in profits...? What do you think taxes are? Maybe living in africa has made me a little cynical, but seriously, it does sound like you're not quite with the rest of us in the real world here...
At the end of the day, the private contractor who gets the tender for the plant and paid the government official a nice kickback will still cut corners and screw the taxpayer(as opposed to a corporation) for every penny it can...
Book had a deep complex and interesting past that was never explored... So, yeah, they dump quite a lot of plot by killing him. Wash was also a useful character because he kept the mood lighter as a sort of counterpoint to all the uber seriousness...
Just do the following for your linux games, support debian/ubuntu and perhaps the redhat derivatives with version support for 1-2 years old releases max (upgrading your release is typically free), debian/ubuntu probably catches 80% of gaming interested linux users out there, and those die-hard slackware nuts are probably much more likely to install ubuntu on a seperate partition rather then buying/installing windows.
You don't have to be that limited. A lot of linux games I've used (e.g. heretic II) came with a installer. You don't have to distribute them as a.deb or.rpm. In fact you could make things nice and platform independent with your steam client acting as a "games package manager." You know, re-invent the wheel and all that...
A interesting point. Another one is, if they can detect our signals, why can't we detect theirs? In developing technology, they would most likely use wireless, and unless there are planets much older or younger then us within range, I reckon it is reasonable to assume they would be fairly close in tech development to us.
In other words I consider it unlikely that they are there, given we haven't heard/detected them yet. A signal will spread an attenuate quite a lot over 100 light years, so I'm not even sure we would be detectable. I think 100 light years is extremely optimistic...
Thus concludes my set of opinions that have no citations other then my own meandering anecdotal experience...
I'm speaking from experience; I bought it on contract. Much nicer than my friend's Galaxy 9000s. And much more stable it seems. Android isn't quite as mature as symbian and seems to require a bigger processor to get the same performance... Still some of the UI isn't perfect.. You can't have everything I guess.
Speaking of the older phones, my nokia 1100 went through a washing machine and still works(new battery was all I needed). Nokia have a very well deserved reputation for solid well built phones. I hardly think they're irrelevant. They seem to build the toughest phones out.
You can't normally infect a PLC. It runs some specialized OS and does not even have all that much memory. Probably separate program/data address ranges. HMIs however can be... Most of the fancy ones seem to run some windows derivative......
Dude, its Africa. I've lived in Africa all my life, and people crying "racism" is very normal here. Its just another way of saying, "We don't like what you're doing and the easiest way to get you to go away is to call you a racist and then everyone will hate you."
It's all very childish. But that's African Politics for you. It is also sad that it distracts from the real racism that nobody ever notices...
That is a large question, larger than the time available to me, so note that the answer is incomplete, and also note that this question of yours is distinct (having a different answer) to the question of why did God create human beings.
To some extent, part of the reason for the universe to exist is to give man a place to stand... Without the universe, there could be no humans, and God wanted humans, so he created the universe(I make no statement here about the method of creation) It is certainly not the whole reason, but a small part of it. Psalms and Isaiah speak of the "whole earth' being filled with the glory of God, and of the "heavens declaring the glory of God". Therefore part of the reason for creation is to declare the glory of God.
Romans 8:19(and on) seems to suggest that the universe is waiting for the fulfilment of one of its purposes; to bring about true sons and daughters of God.
In summary the reasons behind the existence of the universe given by the bible(new and old testament) are essentially for the glory of God and to a lesser degree to give man a place to stand. (And perhaps aliens if you accept the existence of such. I don't really have an opinion on that matter). There are other reasons given, I am sure, but those stand out.
Honest question. Does it really explain "why?", it seems creationism just moves things from "we do not know" to "we still do not know, but God does and he has a plan". Personally, I'd rather "believe"(for lack of a better term), based on all evidence presented to me, that there is no "why".
Yes. Why would an all powerful, self sufficient God create anything? The Bible presents one answer. You may not agree with the answer or consider it sufficient, but it is an answer. "There is no 'why'" is also an answer.
I am a Christian, but I do not consider it very useful to get in an argument with you. I can only tell you what I believe, and if that causes an argument, I will not.
Actually, if you are fair and objective, you'll realise that 99% of the time, these things are caused by individuals abusing the power which religion erroneously gives them. The problem is not religion, the problem is greedy corrupt people. If you take away their tool, they'll use another(what do you think politics is?). It is thus illogical to attack religion based on that reason. I suggest you find another.
And while you may say atheism can not be abused in this way, you run into a small problem. Atheists in general are either very intelligent (and thus not as open to abuse) or very lazy (and thus easy to use and abuse). Converting the world to atheism's philosophy won't help you in the slightest unless you start killing off the stupid (which would be an abuse of atheism using the intelligent.) There are many attack vectors here. Anyhow, stop ranting against religion and start ranting against greedy fools.
For the record, I am a Christian, but I do have a lot of respect for your viewpoint, even if I believe it is wrong.
And it has an amazingly low footprint using next to no processing power. I've often found even the oldest games hog the cpu in their loop, but since exile is event driven, it doesn't. Great for playing on battery power...

Science corrects itself. Your heros don't. Why can't you see that? Thanks by the way for keeping this polite and civil.
Sure lets teach people methodology that can lead them to incorrect conclusions.... Google can help you find more if you like.
~This can only end well.... The simple application is woefully inadequate. However, it does make good television.

If it is unusable(or flat out does nothing), it must be secure - nothing on it to steal. I guess that's what GP was going for...

I did that through highschool english lit. It was only necessary to read the study guide once in order to pass... Why work if you don't have to?
Windows 98 does support USB memory sticks. You just need drivers. I used to have a universal driver I used. Worked quite well.
