    Digital cameras existed in a slightly different format for us astronomy nerds. You could by a 640x480 res high-sensitivity CCD 'camera' for a few thousand $$ to take pictures of what looked like smudges that were supposed to be stars. It always sounded so much cooler in the astronomy magazines :-(

    The real world is not about justice, there are no courts, sometimes there's no social contract to protect you... To answer your question anyway: Yes. I could see the justice in that too actually, and I'm sorry, but It would probably give me a warm glow on the inside and cheery smile for the rest of the day.

    A person doesn't forfeit their right to life when they do something life-endangering, but they certainly raise the odds that they will die. A person doesn't forfeit their right to life when they stand in front of an oncoming train either, but stacking the odds against yourself makes it more likely that you will end up paying for your own stupidity. The real world is not about justice, there are no courts, sometimes there's no social contract to protect you when you do SOMETHING FUCKING STUPID LIKE MAKING 350lb OF MUSCLE, TEETH AND CLAWS ANGRY AT YOU.

    If you do want to talk about justice etc. - too bad it didn't kill all three of them actually.

    The fundamental problem with your statement is that you assume that the $$$ would otherwise have been used to change lives in a big positive way.

    Put very simply, through science, we gain an understanding of the world, and universe around us, how it operates and how we can interact more effectively with it.

    Don't assume too much, that's very culturally diverse. In countries other than the US, plain gold bands can be the engagement rings for both parties, and the wedding ring is the sparkly, expensive one. It actually makes sense if you think about it.

    Sounds more like a survivor to me.

    Best way to survive and prosper - be aware of everything around you, be capable of doing at least 9 or 10 jobs reasonably well and a couple brilliantly. Help people that need it.

    This doesn't necessarily mean jumping on every bandwagon that drives past, but does mean being aware of opportunities outside your comfort zone and being prepared to follow them if your comfort zone turns out to be 'obsoleted' by some sort of 'strategic decision'.

    Let me guess AC, still new to the game, or been sitting at a pretty low level/in an out of the way corner for a long time?

    Not being one of those people that exploit the system still doesn't make me want to have my information stored in a centralised nationwide system built by the cheapest contractor and overseen by public servants.

    A 'better' method of standardised identity verification? How exactly is this 'better'? Show me your proof.

    All this provides is a far more attractive target to a fuckwad script-kiddie than having the data decentralised.

    China certainly has a good grasp of intellectual property, but just doesn't give a shit about the IP of other countries. When someone fakes Chinese stuff though, watch out:

    On October 18, 1992, the Gulzhou Higher People's Court sentenced Luo Deming to death; he had produced and sold 40,000 bottles of counterfeit Maotai wine at a profit of approximately RMB 260,000. On April 29, 1993, the Kunming Intermediate People's Court sentenced one defendant to death and six others to life imprisonment, they had sold counterfeit 'Red Pagoda Mountain' cigarettes for an illegal profit of approximately RMB 150,000. It may be commented that the cases show that China's government through its judicial system has steadily increased its umbrella of control over counterfeiting.

    Sorry, hold it right there.

    Something is very much indeed being taken away from the original author's possession. At least three things actually:

    • the right of attribution of ownership
    • the right against false attribution of authorship; and
    • the right of integrity of authorship

    While I agree that it is not theft in the traditional sense of a discrete object being taken, it is a more vile crime of theft of an intangible moral right. No disengenuity here...

    Ok, how about we take a look at this in your terms of self-exposure to risk. The odds of dying are 1 in 55,000,000 in a terrorist-caused plane disaster assuming one such incident a month and you fly once a month. You may note that the exposure is relatively frequent when compared to rock climbing for your average Joe.
