  2. My wife loves Dynasty Warriors. on Playing Games While Not Ruining Your Relationship? · · Score: 2, Insightful

All the Koei Dynasty Warriors games have interesting characters and plots, and at the same time are easy to pick up and play.

I got my wife totally hooked, now we play co-op all the time. Last time we went to the store, I casually noted that Samurai Warriors had just come out and she made me buy it. Yes, my wife MADE me buy a game. =)

I'd like a few more two-player coop games like them, with a similar play mechanic but different settings, for once we get sick of medieval Asia. I think my wife likes playing together on the same team best -- we've bought Jeopardy and some other board game adaptations, and rented a couple of games she wanted like Harry Potter, but none have captured her fancy quite like DW.

They should at least make an effort to come up with new titles for the rehashed games every time they come out with a new unit. Like "Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Brothers 3?" There's no reason why they had to have two numbers and cram the "Advance" in there.

And now we're going to see it all over again with the new console. Maybe they'll call the "Advance Wars" port "DS Wars." But probably it'll be "Advance Wars DS."

  4. Re:headhunter.net and MLM guys on Internet Job Boards a Bunch of Hype? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The only love I ever got through a headhunter.net posting was about five invitations to interviews from various members of a financial planning company with corporate ties to a red umbrella. I spoke to one on the telephone and told him that I was very specifically interested in doing IT stuff -- desktop support, etc. with an intended career goal of systems administrator. He assured me they were hiring all kinds of people.

Then I actually went to this company's site and saw the magic acronym in their press section -- MLM. That was what made me realize that this guy, and the other four-odd guys also looking to get in touch with me, were just looking for warm bodies for their downline. And they all found me from headhunter.net.

I imagine that headhunter.net is not alone in this phenomenon, and I don't doubt that other people have found fine jobs like TopShelf. I'm just saying, use a disposable address in general, but there for sure.

I hate to reiterate a commonly made point, but pretty much all the jobs I've had, worth having for a long time, came to me through friends or acquaintances. One or two I found on my own through obsessive research but later found out I got the job because a mutual friend gave me a thumbsup.

  8. Old games, Lara, DOA on Genderplay in Videogames · · Score: 2, Interesting

Back in the day, it seemed to make sense to play as female characters in games. They tended to have speed or firepower advantages over male protagonists. Specifically I am recalling Chun Li and some of her crazy SF moves, and Princess Whatshername in Super Mario 2, who, although slow at picking things up, was a fast runner and could levitate for several seconds at a time. I think there were some other 8-bit Nintendo games at the time that featured female playable-characters, usually as "Player 2" in a co-op game.

I clearly remember reading a review with one of the Core Design bigwigs prior to the release of the first Tomb Raider game in which he explained that the game was designed for the at the time novel third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective, and that he'd much rather look at "a shapely female bum" for all those hours of play.

My mom would be disgusted with DOA if she ever looked at it closely, but all the female gamers I know fall into two classes with regards to the late-model female characters - they don't care, Girls Just Kick Ass In General; or they think it's really uproariously funny the way they jiggle.

And this is just parroting everyone else's view on male characters, but a couple of years ago my brother created a playable "me" in WWF Smackdown, and when I saw him, the first thing I did was go back into Create-A mode and take about six inches off my virtual gut.

This'll be small comfort, I'm sure, but the SuperDrive is a Pioneer DVD-R/RW drive that makes fairly regular discount appearances under CenDyne and a couple of other brand names. I haven't tried this yet (but my birthday's coming up, and as long as I'm dreaming, God, I would also like a pony), but it is documented that if you install the drive in your G4 tower, iDVD will be none the wiser that you didn't get it at the factory.

  11. Re:I Don't Find It Likely on Movies Online? · · Score: 1

I have to agree here. One of my very fondest memories of being a little kid is when Nana would take us to the movies on Tuesdays -- the local UA theatre had a $1.00 special. (I just dated myself, I guess. :)

One of my fondest more recent memories is of seeing Pulp Fiction on its opening weekend. Remember when Butch (Bruce Willis' character) is deciding what kind of weapon he wants to go back into the store with? I'll never forget it, because the audience cheered louder as he picked up each weapon... it really added to the fun, I think.

As long as they keep improving movie theaters, I'll probably keep ponying up the money to go see movies in them. My favorite lately is the AMC 20 in Livonia (near Detroit) with the armrests that fold up, which makes it easier to cuddle. Anyway, I wholeheartedly agree with Seumas' point.

I will say that it didn't seem like a "real" IMAX film in that it didn't start out with an image the size of a regular movie screen then jumpcut to a full-size image a minute or two inward to heighten the IMAX effect (pretty much every IMAX movie I've ever seen employs that gimmick!)

After the storm passes, the animals start to come out from inside the ship and stand on the deck to admire the sunny sky. There is a quick long-shot of the ark surrounded by water. You can see various creatures' silhouettes against the sky, and Mickey and Minnie are on the right.

True that! One of my co-workers gave me the headsup about Accompany selling the PalmV (I went for it because it was the coolest, it seemed the most durable, and because it was on sale for a then-unheard-of $350 plus shipping) a couple of months back. I snapped one up, and as soon as it arrived, I was The Envy of My Peer Group. Palm geeks traveled from all over our building to my cubicle so they could pick it up and mess with it ("It's so SMALL!" was the constant refrain). I had guys offering to beam me over this hack or that program. I felt like I was in first grade and had the Battle Damage X-Wing Fighter.

Even my mom likes it, and she thinks most technogadgets are dumb.
