There would be no company.us, they would be company.com.us.

There would be a First Right of Refusal setup so people with company.com would have first dibs on company.com.us and would have the right to revoke the company.com.us from someone else who may have registered it first. Ideally, the transition would be transparent and all the existing .com would be moved to .com.us since that's what it normally means.

Yes, but the issue people have is with the TLD control (.com, .net, etc) and adding/maintaining more of these domains. So, the solution is to just remove these domains alltogether and just have the .NN country codes instead of these non-country-code TLDs.

  3. Simple answer to this issue on Lessig on Internet Governance · · Score: 3, Interesting

Remove .com, .net, .org, all TLDs

Yep, that's right. Just get rid of the whole TLD structure and make people go to .NN where NN is the country code. Let each country control their own country code. There would be .com.NN for the old .com, .org.NN for old .org, .net.NN for old .net, etc.

Just let each country control their .NN country code and have all the additional .whatever.NN they want. So if some countries want a .xxx.NN they can have it and if they don't want it, fine.

The regulations mean that as of October 2006, all new and renewed U.S. passports will contain radio frequency identification chips that will include a digital photo and all other information currently printed in passports.

All I can hope for is that it's encrypted somehow. Which means if the key ever gets out, all US passports will be readable via RFID. Best would be some sort of time varying key so passports in Nov2006 will have one key, passports in Dec2006 will have a different key, etc. This would limit the number of people affected by the discovery of a key, but the problem would still remain.

There are MPI libraries that communicate directly with SCI, MyriNet, Infiniband, etc, why not GigE? I did a quick google for such a library, but didn't find any, so maybe it's part of standard MPI implementations already.

If you're not using MPI, there must be a GigE SAN library that doesn't use IP. It seems like that would reduce your CPU cycles used and latency if you removed IP from the picture since GigE doesn't require IP.

Not necessarily. Those projects just would not have the same seal of approval as the professional products. Some high-profile OSS projects like Apache, OpenSSL/H, etc could probably be approved by IBM or some other large corporation. This company will assure the products' security and give it the testing necessary for whatever approval standards are needed.

However, if it's just some OSS/shareware project, it will not have the same stamp of approval so the consumer knows that it's not backed by any sort of standards much like software is today.

The only thing that would be detrimental to the consumer is if these standards are mandated by a federal agency. Large companies like Microsoft will want to put their software through the rigors to get these seals of approval and other companies will follow suit to be competitive, but shouldn't be forced to.

In the end, the consumer will decide if they will pay the extra amount for software with these seals of approval or not.
