to clarify my post - the difference with facebook is that you have to use your real name - which then has implications as to the types of people you make friends with (ie people who you know in real life). As to all the other online sites (flickr, last.fm, /., etc) my experience is that I might post up stuff relevant to that site, nothing more. If you're on myspace, well that probably does say something about you....

  6. lightweight article on Your Online Profile Actually Tells a Lot About You · · Score: 2, Insightful

TFA is pretty lightweight in its scope. Attempting to generalise about all online profiles is a big call. I will say however, that my facebook profile is pretty accurate - the big difference being that my facebook friends are my actual real life friends, so I can't create a new alter-ego because my friends will call BS.

Taking a slight tangent, but I think this is a prime example of one the web 1.0 heroes turning evil. The original management have ceased running the show and we have new management wanting to eke out every dime possible using strong-arm tactics like this one.

Contrast this with Amazon, Google & Yahoo whose operating ethos is still relatviely benign (especially when compared to Microsoft or Apple). Getting to my point... I think Google at the moment is not evil, but you can bet your bottom dollar when Larry & Sergey leave the stage, Google will turn evil, just like Ebay.

This is really the path Microsoft should have taken with Vista. I'm more interested in Windows 7 than I have been in any version of Windows since '95. I agree. I don't think its a sign of admitting defeat at all. The windows codebase is how old? I think once every decade or two its perfectly sensible to chuck out the old and bring in the new.

  17. Re:Their Power on Google Attempts to Allay US Privacy Fears · · Score: 2, Insightful

I totally disagree, Google has shown remarkable restraint considering the tools they have available to them. If they were run by your standard corporate America sleazebags (eg your telcos or apple), they would be skewing the search results for their own ends, not disclosing what was sponsored or not, dropping competitors from their search etc. or they could be doing a facebook and selling off your private searches to their clients. They probably have a whole host of other options they could be exploiting currently if they really wanted to.

Now to answer another poster's comments, I don't think the problem is with the current management but what will happen when Larry & Sergey leave, that's when your typical slimeball CEO will start to exploit Google's tools for every nickel & dime. So can you see Larry & Sergey leaving anytime soon? If they wanted to take early retirement they could have done so already, also who has the capital to buy Google? So I think for the time being Google will remain relatively benign.
