How many IT managers make it to the board of manufacturing companies (or any other industry except IT Boards).
Boards typically comprise operational guys, ex marketing/sales guys and a bean-counter. Not many sys-admins get that high up the chain, so they get overlooked at board level.
I wouldn't trust Jimmy Wales with my credit card.
This just in from http://www.smh.com.au/news/web/more-woes-for-jimmy-wales/2008/03/11/1205125874243.html
"The toughest two weeks of Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales's career just became a whole lot worse, with a former chief scientist at one of the world's biggest technology companies claiming Wales traded Wiki edits for donations.
Jeff Merkey, a former computer scientist at Novell, claims Wales told him in 2006 that in exchange for a substantial donation from Merkey, he would edit his uncomplimentary Wikipedia entry to make it more favourable.
Merkey made a $US5000 ($5455) donation in 2006 and the edit history for his Wikipedia entry showed that, around the same time, Wales personally made changes to the entry after wiping it out completely and ordering editors to start over."
for this article do you even need to view the video? All I needed was to see the topic " Diebold Leaks 2008 Election Results" and the source - The Onion, to raise a couple of chuckles.
"I just spent ten mins grokking the documentation linked from the MS press release page." You spent 10 minutes grokking 30,000 pages of documentation? wow(!?) I refer you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grok . I suggest you spent 10 minutes skim reading the press release.
"I for one, am not convinced of their sincerity."
Neither am I, and yes most likely its lip service too, but it is a small step in the right direction (from which it will be difficult to move backwards). Hopefully a combination of regulatory & competitive pressures will produce further steps in the future.
"You don't like it? Tough, find a job as a developer at any number of other companies that don't have unethical business practices. I hear Google is hiring."
When you're talking about companies without unethical business practices, I think Google is the only one hiring. Through Intelligence (and luck/timing) they have a place at the top table without using unethical business practices (which cannot be said about that overpriced design firm named after a fruit)
yes it does - you have your coal/gas fired plants providing baseload power and use the sun to revert some of the CO2 emissions. Solar can't provide baseload power....
"but this is America. Its best to speak in terms on finicial damages"
"but this is America. Its best to speak in terms of ingrained puritanism"
there, fixed that for you.
I seriously don't understand the whole spam phenomenom.
I have a paid (£10/yr) yahoo account. Apart from work its my primary personal email account. I get maybe 1 or 2 spam emails in my inbox a week, the rest goes to the bulk email folder which I never check. Spam is a total non-event for me.
ps my work (corporate) email address never gets any spam.
DRM is a bit of non-issue really.
I know it sucks from a philosophical point of view, but for most people who care enough to want to circumvent it, they can spend 10 minutes on the net to figure it out. The others who don't care about DRM aren't affected and will continue to use the media(eg Ipod/Itunes). If there is excessive drm (eg Sony's rootkit fiasco) public outcry will force a reversal. Also the more popular a certain form of media becomes, the more certain it becomes that its DRM will be cracked.
"Even low levels of lead can cause brain damage, increasing the likelihood of behavioral and cognitive traits such as impulsivity, aggressiveness, and low IQ that are strongly linked with criminal behavior. "
Now we know what caused Rudy Giuliani in the 90's
sorry but I don't buy this argument. I would much rather spend my limited time being productive and making money for my business rather than being an email filing clerk. Cost of storage these days makes this a non issue.
In terms of "business intelligence" - the types of data needed for these tasks are held in structured databases which facilitate data-mining, number crunching, whatever you want to call it. (and even then because the data is held in a database, you can hold the dta on your server indefinately and be able to retrieve it in a systematic way)

Yep this is a puff-piece for calcannis. More than likely he contacted newsweek to suggest the article. How this crap got into /. is beyond me.
almost like a "Voice of America" but for the internet age.

I would like to punch Steve Jobs in the face and patent that. Is that patent possible?
So my hunch was correct. I would fallen off my chair if you said you were working for a US company.
Thanks for that definition, did you win a spelling bee with that one? Here's one for you http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tangent
So either you joined a monastery or a company based in Scandinavia?

Thanks for the peanut finance update son. Does your mum know you're on /.?
"I have nothing against woman politicians, but Hillary Clinton? She's no Margaret Thatcher." That's a good thing.

I for one, couldn't care less about packaging. All that matters is the quality of the music coming out my speakers.

totally agree. Its a commercial deal dressed up as an equity stake. good for both parties as now Zuckerberg can claim he's worth $5bn "on paper".

Just like Robert Scoble....
not to mention transmission losses as you beam the power back down through the atmosphere to ground.....
