Now here's a thought. If I rent the movie, but don't have to take it back to the store then I won't look at other titles while I'm returning this one. Hence, I won't be compelled to rent another on impulse. This acctually sounds like a poor marketing decision.
A EULA is only currently legally binding in two states, and it has never been tested in court in those.
A very interesting comment. But, do you have a link to provide a little more info? What are the two states? Why are they not valid in the other states?
After looking at how long it took me to get to lvl 40 in everquest (7 months of hardcore play) I would much rather pay 600 dollars for a 40th lvl character with decent gear than play through the tedium and hell levels.
Why would you want to buy a character. Isn't the whole point of the game to play your way through the levels? Isn't there a feeling of pride for doing it yourself? Buying a weapon, or maybe a little money to help you on the way sounds ok to me, but to buy a completed character seems like a complete waste.
Do you think TV has gone downhill? Do you think the studios know less about your viewing habits than they did in the past?
I wouldn't nessecarily say "downhill" but it definatley hasn't improved any that I've noticed. Sure I get 100+ channels on the dish, but what good does that do me when its the same drivel on every channel.
I can see a bunch of techno-wannabees out there DRIVING and trying to IM each other. Can you say crash?
We're already there with SMS. (btw I just upgraded to a new cell service which gives me two way messaging. I never thought being able to send an email from my cell phone would be so great. Plus tetris. Even for a geek I was overwhelmed with some of the stuff on my new phone/service)
I'd definatley like to see some good books on gui development (both windows and linux).
I'd also be interested in something that dives into alternative OSs. Beyond Windows/Mac/Linux/BSD. Give me a good overview of the real small almost invisible projects hiding around the net, and include them all on a cdrom (where liscenes permit of course.) Everytime I see one talked about on Slashdot or elsewhere I want to download it and give it a try, but I just don't have the time. So, I'd like to see someone else do it and give me a book about the installation, general use, programming, etc... of each. Then I can decide which ones I want to spend my own time playing with.
Why on earth is this marked as funny? I think the poster was serious, and I agree with him 100% We tend to here a lot of griping around here when somone is collecting information on us, but I'll tell them almost anything they want to know if it can genuinly improve my life. I DO NOT want them to know and single out me specifically, but if they can figure out that everyone starts channel surfing when a certain over-sized whiny voiced obnoxious celebrity pops onto our screen for a commercial, shouldn't we be gratefull?/p.
everything else looks very similar to the install notes for most modern unices today...
You say this like its a good thing? As a technical person I'm ok with it, but I (along with a lot of others) definatley see room for improvement in the areas you mentioned. If the interface has changed as little as you say then I think we've got a lot of work ahead of us if we ever want to be a suitable OS for grandma (say what you will, but I believe there are many people who do want this to happen).
Would we be better off, if there were no legal system? Should there be someone superior who would make things right for the little globo-citizen??
I vote we make Cowboy Neal our countries official disciplinarian. I'm sure there won't be any problem getting him elected. He does really well int he polls anyhow.
Or you can just open up your Kazaa client and download Kazaa and install it on your... Oh wait... I suppose if I don't have Kazaa I can't open it... So I open Morpheus and download Kazaa and install it... Oh, I suppose if I already have Morpheus there's no real purpose in installing Kazaa since the use the same network... What was I saying?
Or to keep it going until everyone is tired of it and someone finally gives in and lets Microsoft have whatever they want. Personally, I'm getting tired of it and I'm not even an involved party (other than owning a copy of windows that came with my computer.)
I'm impressed that a large corporation is acctually taking a sane stance. But, I'm wonder just how long they'll be able to maintain this position. Surely even their large pockets can't beat the endless pockets of all the other large corporations who are developing these copyprotection schemes. And what about the DMCA?
all of the suddon you have 45,000 people voting for.NET
Acctually, what I find most interesting is that there were less than 1500 votes when I looked at the poll mentioned in the article. I wouldn't consider any poll with less than 10,000 votes legitamate.
Back when I was about 12 my dad brought one of the tapes home from work and I unwound it all through the house for hours. Mom wasn't too thrilled and made me clean it up. But it sure was fun...
Several of the voters evidently followed a link contained in an email, the subject line of which ran: "PLEASE STOP AND VOTE FOR.NET!"
Is this terribly different from what happens when slashdot has a post announcing some poll about linux? I'm sure we've rigged our share in the past. Not that I think Microsoft is right. I'm just trying to give a little perspective and play devil's advocate for a moment. Feel free to mod me down because you dissagree.
If you want to make an opinion of the film before seeing it (which is kind of dumb) then at least do something like watch the trailers... which in my opinion are quite good!
If I don't attempt to make an opinion before I see the film I would end up seeing a lot of films that really suck. My time is worth too much to me.
I know I'm not saying anything new here so please don't mod me down for being unoriginal, but I am dying for a x86 desktop alternative.
As somone who has been selling custom built computers for at least 5 years and tinkering with Linux and other free operating systems. I become increasingly disgusted when i have to buy a copy of windows forcing my customers to pay an extra $100 for the computer. If only there were an alternative desktop operating system which I felt my customers would be happy with.
My dad and I were discussing this the other day and we came to the conclusion that if you're on vacation you can instantly give people back home a little peak at where you are. Instead of just telling them "We're at the grand canyon and it looks like a big stupid hole in the ground" you can hold out the phone and they can look with their own eyes.
Another option could be tech support instead of "describe what you see on the screen" You can have them point the phone's camera at the screen (Though a small telephone screen probobally won't give you the best view of a computer screen)
If this has better latency than the lousy mini satellite dishes who do I have to beg to get it here now?
I've been waiting forever for my cable company to give me broadband. Originally I was promised by the end of this year. Last month they promised it would be the end of next year. My phone lines are so bad I can only connect at 19.2k and I still get disconnects regularly. Its very difficult being a professional web developer working from home when my internet connection is so miserable. I WANT MY BROADBAND.
I agree. If Mac thinks a nix based desktop is feasable for the average user. Then we shouldn't have any trouble putting together a feasable linux system for the average user.

As I post this the ticker is at: 13109 (just to give a running guide here)

The machine burst into a glorious display of frolicing flames.
Umm... Correct me if I'm wrong but the whole purpose of an ISP is to provide connectivity.

Not entirely true. The article states that "Several of the voters evidently followed a link contained in an email" I do not take that to mean Most.
Sorry to nit-pick, but I'm bored and couldn't find anything constructive to do.

However, that rule doesn't apply if you put out a shitty product squash competition and name it windows.
