  1. Why we like firewire on Users Rage Over Missing FireWire On New MacBooks · · Score: 2, Interesting

we mac folks like firewire because it's a constant 400 Mbs. Unless I'm mistaken (which is possible) USB 2.0's 480 is split among all the devices on the bus. So, the firewire 400 would give better performance for the transfer of large files.

bah.. i've still got a (couple of) working Apple ][es, plus an original Macintosh, a powermac 7200, and a G3 beige tower.
times like these make me wish i never sold my Performa 600CD. It was special because it had a CD-ROM. A 2X CD-ROM! Man, I was pimpin'!

  3. But can we make new stacks? on HyperCard Comes Back From the Dead to the Web · · Score: 4, Insightful

i clicked the links, and it's a good chance i'm just an idiot, but I couldn't tell if there was going to be anyway to create new stacks. The beauty of hypercard, from what I recall, was that it had a pretty simple interface for creating the stacks. I remember doing an entire multimedia presentation with hypercard back in highschool in the 90s. while everyone else did powerpoint and thought the clip art was cool, i was making stuff move using sound and embedding quicktime video. granted, all that is easy (easier?) to do now, but back then, it was cool stuff.

  7. to summarize.... on Why "Vista" Nick White Left Microsoft · · Score: 1

seems to me that he left because he was blogging about the making of vista, and now that's over. his job is done. i found it interesting that he's moving to a "word of mouth" style marketing firm. i guess that it still is true that even with all the advertising we see everywhere in our lives, word of mouth is more effective.

  8. my use of joysticks on Whatever Happened To The Joystick? · · Score: 1

i never really cared for joysticks for platformers. but, i loved them for fighting games. street fighter, mortal kombat, and even the soul caliber series just feel better with a joystick. i never knew anyone who could do that crazy 360 move with Zangief without a joystick (or ripping a hole in their thumb).

i'm not sure if this offends me more as a cartoonist, or as someone who dislikes bad interfaces, or as a mac user. well, this is slashdot, so probably as a mac user, so as to heap more fuel on the fire. but the cartoonist in me is still crying.

  10. Re:Wii- NiGHTS on 2007's Ten Biggest Gaming Letdowns · · Score: 1
i never got to play the original NiGHTS, because i, like most people, didn't own a saturn. which is surprising because i owned every single other sega machine, way back to SMS. that said, i had no real expectations for NiGHTS other than for it to be fun and look kinda cool. Obviously, if the only next-gen console i own is a Wii, graphics aren't a huge deal to me. I do think, however, that NiGHTS does look pretty and, aside from Galaxy, is probably the best looking wii game i own.

i think sega was smart in not tacking on motion controls that _have_ to be used. i see no reason for motion controls for this game. Right now it is rare, especially for a third party developer, not to force players to use some sort of motion control that ruins the game.

I'm not sure how this game can really be a disappointment for most people. the two-player game is fun, if short. the graphics do seem to be some of the best i've seen on wii. the controls are obvious and simple. ( i would recommend using a classic control if you have one.)

i would love to play the original, which was revolutionary when it came out (from what i understand), but I can't. at least, i can't easily play it (i'd need to buy a saturn, the special controller, and the game... which would be spendy according to my last check on ebay.)

I think NiGHTS Journey of Dreams is a good reintroduction to (what I hope) is a continuing franchise. it's not perfect, but it's an excellent game and a great (re)entry into a new world.

  11. Re:Wii on 2007's Ten Biggest Gaming Letdowns · · Score: 2, Interesting
you know, that's a great point. i was looking at my wii (the only next-gen system i own) and i realized that my favorite games for it come from either nintendo or sega. how crazy is that? if you would have told me 20 years ago, when i was playing my 8-bit master system that i'd being playing sega games on a nintendo and love it, i'd have told you you were a doo-doo head, because i was 8.

(my favorite wii games, right now, are wii sports, wii play, sonic, mario, and nights. just got mario and nights, and they are probably the best two wii-exclusive titles 2007 provided.)

  13. if it's consistent.... on Original Marvel Comics Going Online · · Score: 1

i just want to chime in that, as a comic geek, i kinda look forward to this. i buy a lot of single issues every month. if marvel got in the habit of putting up _everything_ six months later on their website, then i would totally go that way instead of the floppy route. then, if i really liked something, i could go buy the hardcover. if they put up all of brubaker's captain america and warren ellis's next wave, i'm in. patric

  14. Apple should buy/merge with _blank_ on Why Apple Should Acquire Adobe · · Score: 1

is it just me, or is it anytime either apple or some other company releases some hip new thing, the thing we always see is some "pundit" theorizing that apple should merge / buy the other company? Think about all the crazy "Apple & Nintnendo Merge" rumors/desires/nonsense when the Wii hit it big. And, this is not the first time anyone has suggested that apple and adobe need to become one in some sort of unholy union. I think we see these stories just about any time apple or adobe has a new major release. this of course begs the question, why don't we see the same stuff about ms and adobe? i think that the people who use apple and adobe products are probably using them both, for the most part. art geeks, and i know a lot of us, usually stick with apple and adobe. i think i know one artist personally who uses a windows machine, and it's mostly because she loves her games. there's obviously some sort of vibe apple gives off these days that make people think that they really need to acquire some other company because they have so much to offer each other. to that i say "meh."
