"The difference between you and a parent are much much smaller than the difference between you and someone of a different race."
You said that with no evidence whatsoever. In the other thread, another poster refuted that claim. You then started going on about semantics.
What you're going to get in response to this are a bunch of posts saying that "If this money was invested in nuclear fusion, within 50 years we could have unlimited power!!!!!".
I think the really cool thing about this whole story is what it says about "race". For hundreds, if not thousands of years, and even now, people have using "race" and skin colour as reasons for subjugation. But here we have the first cast of extremely close matching DNA, 1 in 113 billion, and they are from different "races". Wow.
This, if anything, should dispel any stupid theories about the difference of "race" within the human species.
Is this service going to open to the world market? Or just the US? There's a huge disconnect with the purported ideology of business, that is, globalisation and the free-market, not to mention the WORLD wide web, but pretty much every service (like iTunes and Steam) charge one price for Americans and another price for everyone else. This is noticeable here in Australia. Our dollar is almost at parity with the US dollar, so it's obviously to our benefit to purchase things from the US or from companies based in the US. But tracks on iTunes cost literally twice as much and we're forced to buy games from the "Australian Steam brochure" which are again, up to twice as much.
So while I see this as a good move, I hope Amazon will buck the current trend, and as a company that's based purely in the online realm, will understand that arbitrarily forcing different prices because they come from different countries is stupid when we're talking about the WORLD wide web.
Interesting isn't it. The Egyptians left us priceless treasures consisting of gold and jewels in pyramids as their gift for future generations. We leave harmful nuclear waste in concrete tombs.
I think the OP's exaggerated the point somewhat, but it still stands to a degree. While I don't think Slashdotters are going to bury their heads in the sand over this, and the previous Gmail article (A bug in the calender system revealing users real full names), the reaction has most certainly been different to what one would expect if the same story was about Hotmail or AOL.
Get your priorities right people. I submitted a story around about the same time as this, about yet another huge breach of privacy by Facebook (Here's the story if anyone is interested: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/security/soa/Logged-in-or-out-Facebook-is-watching-you/0,130061744,339284281,00.htm/). I watched my submission get closer to the red as time passed and this ridiculous advertisement for a film about an animated robot get closer to the black. Now it's on the front page and mine is resigned to the fate of whatever happens to washed up submissions.
Sigh.
CmdrTaco taking money from from Pixar? Maybe he just likes cartoons? Or maybe I need to get a life...
Well you'd think that. But even here, Slashdot tells you about the terrible deeds of the US government and nothing's changed. Why do you expect the Cuban's to do anything?
Man this doesn't make sense. So what, are they saying that as soon as you plug in your modem to the PC thousands of different sources are already trying to infect you? Even if you don't browse? Because the point is you can download Windows Updates and you can install and update your AV with only two connections. Not sure how you're going to get infected that way.
Of course it could just be "Windows users can't resist dodgy porn sites for more than 4 minutes". Which makes more sense. I mean, when you've just gotten access to the internet what's the first thing you do? Hot Busty Nurses > Slashdot.
Wtf does this have to do with the crap that is "Web 2.0"? When has giving a donation been considering "Web 2.0"? Online donations have been around since forever. Well I guess everything else that is labelled "Web 2.0" such as social networking and user generated content has been around forever as well, so from that stupid and pointless viewpoint I guess it would be "Web 2.0".
Did Kdawson post this story?
I doubt Joe Sixpack knows of the existence of the LHC, or the measurement of kelvin, let alone the actual *temperature* of the LHC measured in kelvin.
I can see the Governator imposing a ban on the import of this product...

So according to your logic, your parents and yourself are from a different race? Well played.

Very insightful post, but you must be new here.

Booth babes!
"It'll be pretty obvious that communitites not tied to the www 24/7 will be sorely under-represented."
And those are the communities which have the highest outbreaks of disease... So it seems pretty pointless to me.

*Shakes head*. How did Soulskill make such a n00bish kdawson error.

Clearly you missed the point. Our waste won't really benefit anyone in 10,000 years. The treasures of the ancient Egyptians benefited a lot of people.

When I submitted the story, I included that link. The editors decided to remove it.

Actually the iPhone is only available on three networks, albeit the three biggest networks - Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.
Ironically it's not available on the "3" network".

"move to Afghanistan." Afghanistan - Where people go to stay healthy and safe.
"Yeah right, so googling 'biodegradation Sphingomonas polyethene OR polyethylene' doesn't return any hits in Canada."
Second result is your post! http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=biodegradation+Sphingomonas+polyethene&btnG=Search
Maybe I'm just hungover but to me the article seems to be nothing but: "Blah blah blah Apple. Blah blah Apple Blah Apple Blah."
I never said it was. "Emulate" was the closest term I could come up with.
I guess it could emulate Wubi?
