  1. Re:Never mind the PVRs on Video Storage And Hard Drive Manufacturers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why not? How else is it supposed to work? Besides, with a PVR, you're not going to channel surf any more, so who cares how it changes channels?

My Tivo is built into my DirecTV box. It is the cable box. No messy IR, complete integration with the TV Guide. That's how it's supposed to work. When every cable box comes with a PVR, that's when they'll really take off.

I would agree to the parent. I have three Hotmail accounts. One address I give out when I'm signing up for anything public, and the other two I keep pretty quiet. I get no spam on one, next to none (maybe one or two a week?) on the other, and tons and tons on the one I have been giving out for 5 years. I don't think Microsoft has given out the addresses, or I would be getting tons of spam in the other accounts as well.

Just to add another anectode to this thread:

My landlord and I both bought DirecTivo at the same time, from Hughes. Theirs worked for a week, then crapped out. They had to wait for a month to get a new one. So far, so good with that one.

Mine, on the other hand, has been hacked to death. Extra 80GB hard drive (an IBM Deskstar, no less -- how's that for tempting fate?), lots of other warranty voiding type activity, and no problems yet, for over a year.

    Knock on wood...

I personally use Sprint for eight Frame-Relay WAN links across the US with a hub in New York, and I find their service and support to be awesome, although my sales representative is helpless and I find them changing TAC's on me constantly. However, when I have a problem with my service, their management center usually calls me before I even know that it's down.

One downfall to all this? Price. I also pay about $10,000 a month for the luxury of nearly 100% uptime. That's a lot of cash for a non-profit like ourselves, but well worth it.

Whoa...I don't know what kind of crappy turntable and records you were listening to, but many people (including myself) would say the exact opposite. A clean record, a decent turntable and a decent amp will sound much deeper, richer, and full of life. Just look at Sony's new SACD, their attempt to emulate what vinyl does to music -- breathe life into it that doesn't exist on regular CD's.

I asked if having a remove link technically meant it's not SPAM. I didn't ask you how you felt about it.

I quote, from the Unsolicited Electronic Mail Act:

    "Specifically, the new bill would:

    * Require accurate return addresses on unsolicited commercial email;

    * Make it illegal to continue spamming someone after they have requested
to be removed from a distribution list"

Hence, once these are included, the electronic communication is no longer SPAM.

Hmmm...says here "Netflix will require any company that wants to send e-mail touting the Netflix service to sign up directly with Netflix, so that Netflix can ``exercise direct control over the program and can verify that the partner is following non-abusive e-mail practices.''

I hate spam as much as the next person, but every message I've ever received from Netflix has a "remove" link in the content. That means that it's not technically SPAM, right?

If they're using XP then they've got ZIP built right into the system, so that's probably what they're using.
