If they are crippling the free/downloadable version, that would be a Bad Thing.
It's not being crippled, everything else from the web for free (except Civ:CTP which is understandable). They're just facing up to the fact that most people don't enjoy 650 meg ISO downloads, and would much rather have a ISO image of just under 300 megs.
Coaches, busses and other oversized vehicles -MUST- have rev limiters fitted, by law. If these are removed, or disabled, in any way, shape or form, don't expect the judge to be merciful.
But this cannot be used to track information (of any kind) about the people driving, where they are, and how fast they are going. This older (and IMO better) way of reducing speeds does not provide any potential for misuse.
This guy is definately misguided in a big way. eCommerce is meant to complement rather than replace normal ways of shopping.
He's trying to use eCommerce in a way its not meant to be used (yet), and I don't think he'll last the year. Hopefully/. will follow up on this at this time next year.
I use eCommerce to buy a lot of stuff on the web, but that doesn't mean that I don't go and buy stuff in shops, the two aren't mutually exclusive as the guy who is locking himself up seems to imply.
Why is the parent post moderated up to 5: Insightful? Its only just barely even on topic.
I don't see anything remotely insightful in the post. Maybe someone involved in Mozilla had some moderator points to spare and decided to push up the post that wow-ed Mozilla.
I've bought the Linux version of Quake III from Loki using the preorder thing. I got my CD a few days back. I have no intention of running it under Linux though. I bought the Linux version for 2 reasons:
a) Support Cross-Platform Games b) Cool Tin Box
Its amazingly easy to run it under Win32. All you need is a quake3.exe from one of your Windows buddies (844kb). Dump it in a directory with the BaseQ3 directory and then run quake3.exe. That simple.
And i'd like to congratulate id on a kickass game.
I'm a relative beginner to Linux, but have had my share of trying out different Linux distros and can find my way around now.
But while setup of the OS is usually painless, setting up the X server has to be the most annoying and crappiest part of the setup. You Linux people are always saying how MS blows etc... but they seem to have a system that works for detecting video cards and monitors, and we're not talking of a system that doesn't work, it works 99% of the time.
The Linux way requires you to know a great deal of stuff you shouldn't have to bother finding out.
Excuse my language, but what the fvck is Netscape/AOL thinking? There cannot be any explaination for this than sheer stupidity.
One of the things that Netscape does not have is time. Yet they seem to be wasting all the time that they have. They had a working version of Mozilla months ago. How long can it take to convert that to release quality code? While Netscape/AOL is twiddling their fingers, Microsoft is putting out new versions of what I think is the best browser out there.
Way to go Netscape/AOL, compete with a better competitor by... delaying your own browser yet again.
I'm not even a Linux user (but I have used it before, and am familiar with it), but I still bought Quake III Linux edition to support it. I can always download the Win32 binaries and use them with the Linux CD.
Besides, the limited-edition tin box is cool. And I'm sure by now the Win32 limited-edtion sets must be sold out. Get your copy of Quake III from http://quake3.lokigames.com/ now!
This is A Good Thing. If StarOffice runs on all common platforms, it could compete with Office (not likely, but possible) to be the file format of choice. Competition is another Good Thing.
I agree with this definately. I submitted a news item saying that Windows 2000 RC3 had been released. Not only was my news rejected, but Slashdot never posted the story *at all*.
If a major Linux distro kicked out a new beta, Slashdot would be throwing out news itemsjust like spammers throw out junk mail.
Is Slashdot really "News For Nerds." or is it really "News for Linux Junkies"
I think that this should have been done a long time ago. What always happens is that whenever a privacy breach occurs, there is a huge public outcry. After a while it dies down.
BUT, the offending product still remains, and NO REAL ACTION is taken.
It'd good on the EU to see this change. For once, a credible world body is giving attention to privacy, and this is a Good Thing.
Now that some REAL ACTION is being taken, maybe people will stop making offending products so that they won't end up on the wrong end of some embargo.
The potential benefit for consumers for this class action lawsuit is almost zero. Just because the FoF basically trashes Microsoft to hell doesn't mean that every lawsuit brough against them is going to be instantly successful. This is just an act of greed by greedy lawyers.
Think about it. If you signed up to this lawsuit, what could YOU possibly gain as a result, besides lots of wasted time (and money). On the other hand the lawyers would have a field day...
Its really disturbing to see that you Americans think that China is *always* up to no good. Its so hypocritical that a nation that uses its power to its own benefit (and no one elses) to say that China is now doing something wrong by putting something in space.
I live in Hong Kong, and sometimes you people amaze me by how narrow-minded you are.
You guys need to wake up from the American dream and face the reality of the real world.
Go ahead, moderate me down, but you all know its true.
Interesting to see that all of the developers listed slashdot.org as web site they visit often.
PHP is going to be a strong alternative to ASP, and its good to see that the developers are being open and forthcoming about developments in PHP. Way to go...
Gore needs public exposure. Everyone thinks he has no brain, and from the things he says it certainly seems like it sometimes.
In any case, for him to be SEEN as doing something (whether he actually does is another matter) will make him look good, taking a tough line on the "evil Microsoft empire" will rake at least some votes for him. He *needs* it cause he needs all the support he can get.
Can you believe it? On the topic of phone numbers, I actually dialled my ISP's IP number instead of their phone number. A sign technology has taken over your life.
Me too. All of my zones have random alphanumeric passwords, but I only have 2 sites including my ISP where I use Zone 1 passwords, down to probably about 50 where I use my Zone 3 password

Is this not worse?

Note that wherever years are being used as version numbers, for purist arbitrary version people there is always an actual product version as well:
Windows 95: 4.00.950
Windows 95A: 4.00.950a
Windows 95 OSR2: 4.00.1111
Windows 98: 4.10.1998
Windows 98 SE: 4.10.2222
Windows 2000: 5.00.2195
Here are your arbitrary version numbers. Don't complain about them not being there.

Its 2:27am in Hong Kong 1/1/2000.
No problems here at all. Both my computers (one Windows 2000 and one Windows 98) are running fine with no problems as well.
Everything here is working just as before.

Year 2000 is NOT the end of the Millennium, Century nor even Decade. We'll have to wait one more year for that.
Its because most HOWTOs, man pages and help files are usually written in such language that only a somewhat experienced person would understand.
If you want newbies (including myself) to stop asking questions, all the above need to be in more lay-man terms.
So how does this work? Some people get different packages from others. Thats equivalent to cheating some users out of stuff they *should* have.
I'll be *EXPECTING* my copy of SuSE 6.3 inside my tin box when it reaches me.

In other words, all it needs is for it to work. What is the point of having something that works, but crashes all the time?
Oh yeah, I just bought a new car, it only crashes twice a day. How useless is that?

It is worth pointing out, since no one seems to realise, that this is the Quake 3 Demo TEST. This is not as yet the final demo.
I'm getting 150KB/s NOW...
