    You seem comfortable with the notion that it's suitable under circumstances that you agree with yet not for others. I'm not. Just who should determine "clear public interest or exposes wrongdoing"?

    Was there even a half-assed attempt in this case? While you're worrying about "who defines what", there isn't even an attempt to prove that exposing Apple's trade secrets is in the "public interest". I *do* trust the courts to see the line and make the decisions. Someone always has to... and guess what? There is plenty of legal precedent here to do so (since we live in a jurisprudence based legal world).

    Cravenly hiding behind "journalistic rights" as a shield for *any* arbitraty activity is a flawed position.

    I have written and told them I DO NOT WANT my donation being used for this case, as I don't believe "freedom of the press" should be used as a "get out of jail free" card. There should be proof of "public interest" first.

    I call this the race to Google. It is a test for how long it takes for a desktop machine to actually become useable. This is usually a better measure than the ambiguous "boots in x seconds", that we often see. Here is how to perform the test.

    Really, if you're interested in speed, you should

    1. include MacOS to test more than just x86 platforms and
    2. why does booting matter, you just need to "race to Google" from standby, non?

    Napster, the main challenger to Apple in the online music market, last year cracked Apple's DRM to make songs from its web song shop compatible with the iPod. While Napster's Pence did advocate a more open approach from Apple, he said mandating one through government was not necessary.
    Shit, I had no idea Napster hacked Apple's DRM!!! (Notice that the paragraph of the article says Napster, but the link talks about the well-known Realmedia Harmony-hack and subsequent recovery by Apple).

    I did some calculations a while back, and based upon 100 billion neurons in the brain, each capable of firing let's say an average of 1000 times per second, and we'll assume that at any given time a generous 1% of all neurons are actively firing, and that the information firing takes 100 clock cycles to process, then you'd need the equivalent of about a 100 TeraHz processor with oodles of memory to have the same processing power as the human brain. Of course, you'd also need to correctly simulate *how* the brain is wired up to get any kind of beneficial processing.

    That's one way to think of it... or you could harness the power of all those windows boxes on the net and distribute your processing to a massive botnet of ~1Ghz processors.

    In fact this would be a much better model of the decentralized, massively parallel wetware we run upstairs... I mean, we don't have 100Thz processors in our heads, just massively parallel slow ones.

    The Universaly Media Disk could be a success:
    1. if they are available as UMD-Rs (they could lock down the PSP to make the media open but the player closed/DRMed... to keep their medai wing happy)
    2. if they price them right (both pre-loaded UMDs and UMD-Rs)
    I see that a lot of people saw what Apple did, and are trying their own entry into the digital media market. I wonder how these will pan out. Note however, noone is taking on Apple. They pretty much see no cash in the business... thus, they move on to the "next iPod possibility" aka Video. I wonder what Steve Jobs would say to those who make possibly flawed assumptions (ie, does "audio market" == "video market">) :-)

    I looked around a bit, and found . These guys used to sell a battery that I really wanted (claimed 16 hour charge). However, my boss at the time wouldn't shell out. Now a bit later (4 yrs), I realize that it was probably not worth it, since I didn't travel as much.... but it still would have been nice, since
    1. I have cycled through about 6 laptops in the past 4 years and
    2. I still travel once in a while.
    However, I did hear that the charge runs out pretty quickly (i wonder if I'd get as much as 3 hours from that pad these days), and the external batteries can be annoying (warm, and extra gadget to pack).... but some of my coworkers swear by their 2nd or 3rd spare battery for the long haul trip.

    I wonder if buying the external battery might be a better investment than this new tablet?

    Ah, but if you go through Napster you know you're getting what you requested, and the quality is all the same.

    And that quality will be pretty much *shite*.... ie, re-encoded WMV as MP3. You can get better quality on your average P2P network!! (presumably one step WAV -> MP3).. and you dont have to put out a one month subscription outlay for it either!

    As far as the legality is concerned, they're both illegal, with the subtle difference that from Napster, they could easily watermark all their songs to be able to track copies... thus making it more dangerous to share/store.

    I don't know how the copyright cartels would react if a machine could make illegal copies of itself.

    Creaming their pants, most likely... just imagine... 1) plant in "customer" network, 2) wait and watch it "grow", 3)then send in the BSA goons for some profit^H^H^H^H^H^H liscence violations... it'd be like money that grew on trees.

    And that's not mentioning all the money to be made for the liscence compliance software "White Blood Cell" that seeks out and destroys these illegally spawned copies on the customer's network...

    The only problem is that they are still very overpriced.

    WRONG.. the TWO problems are: 1) Price and 2)Mobo availability (and price).

    Athlon64 wins primarily because it is faster, costs a whole hell of a lot less, and is much more available.

    Intel fucked themselves over with the P4 and have still yet to learn from it... lets hope they learn in time to recover from an AMD marketshare majority.

    That being said, I think some sort of Ultimate Browser Agony Test is a good idea. But to suggest that it's somehow Microsoft's fault that we need one is, well, just dumb.

    Nothing dumb about it. Micrsoft has thumbed their nose at standards for the past 10 years, and the mess that is web standards is due mostly in part to the way IE (with > 90% marketshare) fails to adhere to those standards. Oh, and btw, if you haven't forgotten: Microsoft is a convicted monopolist in more than one continent. That means it's illegal for them to do shit like engineered lack of interoperability.
    But some people keep apologizing for them (sigh).

    Yeah, I know many here think Comcast sucks, and maybe they do, but I wouldn't mind seeing what TiVo has built and their name survive, even as part of Comcast. So far I've been pretty happy with TiVo and as a Comcast customer, adding TiVo can only be a good thing!

    Be careful what you wish for. Business folks often think that buying a company is worth it *just* for the brand (it makes business sense). And in that case, any culture of freedom that the brand used to have evaporates in light of new management. This loss of culture often accomopanies a loss of some folks key to the distinctiveness of the product.

    This doesn't happen all the time, only when the acquiring company doesn't respect the culture of the company it's acquiring.

    Substantial user interface design and testing went into the Tivo remote control, including many battles over which buttons to leave off (to reduce complexity), a special rubber for good click feel, and the distinctive peanut shape.

    I like the peanut shape, but my main gripe is that you have to LOOK at the remote to tell which side is which... often I point the tivo remote just to find out I shot myself and not the IR receiver.
    Other than that, we love our tivo remote :-)

    Could you explain how the Mozilla Foundation currently gets its funding and what your vision is on the long-term funding for open source projects like Mozilla?

    Furthermore, are there any plans to allow for specific funding of projects... ie, I would like to donate more than I currently have, but I'd like all of that to go towards a particular project (SVG in Mozilla, etc). I don't want to see my funding being used to promote projects that I don't like (MiniMo, etc). Will this be possible? If not, why not?

    Then what about prostheletyzation? Your summary point is in contrast to the fundamental difference between western (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) faiths and eastern ones... if you want to play along, why do you seek to "convert" those who "do not believe"? That's not quite "playing nice".

    Then why don't you tell them so? I think some constructive feedback would help. Believe you me, I totally agree with what you're saying.. and it'd be nice if Google had some competent competition (MSN Search? hahahah) that mirror Google's minimalist approach.

    Actually, no. While we hold those rights very high in the United States, the basis of democracy and capitalism is property rights.

    Dude, you are getting your political and economics mixed up. Democracy != Capitalism. Many countries in Europe are, for example, Socialist Democracies. You are correct in saying that property rights form the fundamental basis for capitalism, but not for democracy.

    On the other hand, the GP poster isn't correct either. Free Speech is NOT the "very basis" of the rule of law, and only part of the basis of democracy.

    I take it you've never tried to run USB devices with WindowsNT 4.0, have you :-) Twas 4 years ago, and I was all happy with my nice new shiny USB mouse... plug it in, *BSOD*. I suppose you're right.. it wasn't technically a HANG

    Theory is that the dual core chips will run cooler than two single core chips and there's less real estate on the motherboard required (one socket and less glue circuitry).

    Add to this that mutli-core chips usually have better memory interconnects with each other, improving speed to a small degree...not to mention that either there are more memory coherence interconnects for all chips involved (assuming a point-to-point design similar to AMD aka Hypertransport) or a shared memory bus like Intel (and reduced memory throughput per chip)

    In short 2xDual is better than 4xSingle.

    As you mentioned these students probably have admissions at other schools. I can only hope that Harvard publicly publish their names so that they can be blacklisted throughout the nation.

    If Harvard were to do that, they would be guilty of the same sort of "unethical behavior" they're accusing the students of. Honestly, I think the response to automatically blacklist those students in the first place is childish and is trying to cover up for their own inadequate security and process. Furthermore, what ever happend to the original cracker dude? If looking at your score is unethical, I'd say its not exactly good behavior to be posting exploits (even if it doesn't hurt anyone).
