A automated, networked, accelerometer-based quake detection process may be more reliable. Sure, a lot of mobile phones would be moving around, but if enough phones in the same areas showed synchronised movements, maybe this could work.
Are you donating the resources to do that sort of data processing? There are a lot of cell phones out there, so you'd need a way of transmitting and accessing all that data (if you DO have an earthquake in the area, the communications lines will be either down or saturated, so you have to take that into account). Then, you'd need a way of determining which synchronized movements match a pattern, and not just random noise; then, finally, to determine whether the patterns are quake-related or not. (See those two isolated phones that are moving at a 0.75 Hz rate in perfect synchrony? It's not a quake, it's a couple dry humping in the middle of nowhere...) On top, you'd need to find a way of telling people that the tracking is not invasive of their privacy. Not sure how that would work out...
It's on the other side of the planet. It would probably take a sizable portion of our lifetimes to drive Opportunity all the way to Spirit's location (assuming that is even possible due to topographical obstructions).
My bank does. However, their email essentially amounts to "we sent you a message, log in at our site to see it." They don't put a direct link to the bank's site, they just tell me to go there, so I know that anything that has a bank URL is trying to phish my info. A certificate would still be a helpful addition in that case, though.
That's pretty close to reality. There's not much to do anymore, at least for me. I still keep up with my watchlist, and visit frequently to remain aware of what is going on, but my time is spent doing other useful things. And yeah, internal politics get boring after a while...
As far as I remember from my Apple-using friends, the Macs have a key combination you can press while booting, and instead of starting the OS, they start a special mode in their firmware which makes them to appear like a harddrive on their firewire port.
This makes one able to rescue or repair a Mac even if the system is completely b0rked, just as if the harddrive was removed and connected to an external FireWire box.
It's official, Cuban has lost it. Does he really think that $1M will persuade any of the big players? Heck, even Wikimedia (sixth in Alexa rankings) is not trying to make a profit, would only meet 12% of its operational expenses with a free million. Does he really think Amazon or Ebay would let go one of their major revenue streams?
That said, maybe Windows Live (5th in Alexa) wouldn't mind the extra million...
Not sure about Canada, but when driving to Mexico, they have what is essentially a glorified traffic light. If you get a green light, you are not searched and you are free to go. If you get a red light, you have to be pulled over to get your car search (usually just a cursory inspection). They care more about you not bringing stuff in without paying duties than about you being a spy, though. This approach is also reflected in waiting times: In the Douglas, AZ crossing, you would rarely wait more than a minute to go to Agua Prieta, Son., but you would need to wait a couple of hours while driving from Agua Prieta back into the US.
Plugging that into Google Maps (which Apple conveniently uses for the map and provides a driving directions link for) shows that the two locations are separated by 8.5 miles. So they're not even close.
However, in Phoenix terms, that's 10 minutes of driving. Everyone drives in here (widespread suburbia, awesome freeway network, horrible public transportation outside the central Phoenix-Tempe-Mesa corridor, and oven-like temperatures), and someone from Scottsdale won't particularly mind driving down to the Chandler location if he wants to get his dose of Apple for the day. Also, consider that both the Scottsdale Quarter and Fashion Square are near the Pima Freeway -- State Route 101L -- so they really aren't as far as the map says they are.
Now it's not fair to assign the blame for those penmanship incidents to doctors replacing penmanship with typing. Doctors have always had horrible and illegible handwriting, since they have to digest a horrible amount of information being recited at them in the shortest amount of time possible (as a doctor friend of mine told me). So, their handwriting degenerates to a modified shorthand, which they retain after leaving med school...
Make sure you rescanned the box after yesterday. TV stations were switching from their temporary ATSC frequencies (typically UHF) to their permanent frequencies (which may or may not be the same) throughout the day on Saturday. If it doesn't fix it, check http://www.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/maps/ and see if the channels are still available in your area (weak signals will probably will not be received, unless you have a badass antenna)...
Unfortunately, you're right... all you have to mention is gays, abortions and illegals in this state and you get people to vote for extreme far-right candidates...:(
I didn't know the Spartans used Roman numerals...
I wish I had mod points. I must have pulled something laughing at this...
They are server administrators, which means they probably look like the average slashdotter. Do you really want to see that?
It is possible. Mexico City does it with the Sistema de Alerta Sísmica.

David, you keep posting the same thing on every Apple story. The joke is getting a bit stale; stop beating the dead horse...
Try http://download.wikimedia.org/. Note that the files there are huge.

Yes, that's Target Disk Mode.

So, an idiotic judgment by a judge justifies more idiocy?
... an EADS executive is laughing with glee...
It's Arpaio, by the way. My favorite antic is what he's been doing against New Times staff... I still wonder why he hasn't been arrested yet.
But we're in the land where supply-side economics is king. Raising taxes is BLASPHEMY! :(
I get your point, but do you really want these people to stick around any longer than the bare minimum?

That's your analog nightlight at work...
clear and unequivocal legislation is required for business methods to be patentable
Since when has that stopped anyone? :(

It's art school, so you can boot into Linux or something else that they don't understand. If they can't use it, they won't ask you to use it.
:)
Use a terminal for bonus evil points.
