Mind you, I use Linux. I write OSS code. And I'll still say you're an idiot.
Well, i use Linux and write oss as well.
But i have a different opinion anway.
I have not seen a single bluescreen on Windows XP that wasn't related to hardware problems. Those same bluescreens caused kernel panics on Linux.
I repair such boxes on a daily basis. 90% of the reproducable blue screens are software problems. Period.
I dont have time to check every cause, but i usually boils down to
Buggy drivers (a lot more common than you seem to think)
Malware and virus-infections
OSI layer 8 configuration problems
Hm,
remember that year. I was forced to used Linux back then (without even knowing *it* was Linux), and considered it bullshit.
Wasnt until 98 until i actually installed it on my own box. Geesh, you wouldnt even believe the reason i tried it. While waiting during a job application i read some stupid manager magazine. The only article that was interresting was about some strange OS, which was free of charge and better. Well, i disliked Windows since 3.1 (the first version i used, i at first thought my computer was defective because of the poor performance of windows).
Well, only a dial-up connection back then, so i bought a copy of SuSE.
With my DOS background it took a while to get used to this new thing. After getting used to bash this was really getting fun. I pretty soon realised the real multitasking (even Novell DOS only had Task-switching) and was getting really excited.
About a week later i recompiled my kernel to get audio and video to work and eventualy started my first own X-Server. Boy, i was suprised to see the fvwm2 i used in the uni. But from that day on i already knew enough to take advantage of the power of linux (unlike the uni-days where i considered it some "wierd windows").
From that time on the only reason to use Windows was for gaming, and even that is a point that is growing increasingly irrelevant.
Yes, 95 probably was the high time of windows.
People are already asking about linux in the small computer shop i work. Not everbody wants it, sure, but its getting more popular by the day.
no more nore less.
In the beginning i was designed to behave like Solaris. Until Linus found the POSIX Standards (and thus, it behaves like UNIX, even a lot more than other "real" unix variants).
No more or less than figuring out that 4 wheels make a good way for transportation.
like to say something.
I lost my believe in Sun.
Sure, they are the greastest (commercial) supporters of open source. No denying that.
Great, my last OS-Project was a load of bullshit (unless you consider a really simple servlet type server interresting) but well, i do like open source, and try to to it when possible. Yeah just me, and probibly millions or others, well not everybody does the "great" next project. I just hope i am not the only one to believe in the power of individuals.
In case your reading, remove me from any further responinsibilities Sun, my true name is Syren Baran, you should have me in your records;)
Well, i only had a couple of semesters of physics, so i cant claim to understand everything in the paper, but nonetheless.
The test setup seems sane, three test runs in different locations with two different samples each.
They took precautions to reduce the interference of ions.
The results are extremely close to theoretical predictions for eka-thorium.
So, all in all its not proof, but chances arent bad.
I hope they have a janitor class I can play. A Forsaken janitor yeahhh that'd be the shit...
Ahh, yes, i remember Space Quest. Sniff, i hear have tears in my eyes cause of you!
Then you should know that Diablo is the lesser evil!
How dare you let evil cow king respawn and not kill him!
Just cause he respawned 100000 times doesnt mean hes invincible, you have to continue!
Well,
aint too sure thats actually a bad thing. Being honest and pessemistic. Well, im not an engineer, but a software-developer, but currently im mainly doing PC-repairs (ok build my own pcs and for friends for about twenty years now) and sales in small store. Well, i probably dont sell as much as other people, but people dont complain and run back cause something something doesnt work, i pretty much clear problems in advance. And people like talking to someone who actually has knowledge. So, given my still limited experience, i dont think being honest and a bit pessimistic hurts (i think beeing slightly pessimistic is only realistic with a small "buffer", doesnt really matter if its time or money thats involved) when you sell something.
Aww, great we need more qualified personal for the computers... willing to work for a neglegiable amount of bucks and poor working conditions. Ahh, great its not just the US where thats the common opinion. I dont like the idea of "disinfect the pc for food". No, i dont want to be canibalistic, but thats the point where i rather think "might as well eat you".
Personally I dislike Hilary with a passion and will say anything to get elected. She feels entitled to be the president because her husband was and Bill Clinton supported NAFTA. I feel sorry to have to tell you this, my poor american friends. But you havent got a democracy. How many democratic countries do you know where "senior" and "junior" ruled? If everybody really had equal chances the possibility is near zero. You guys got a moneycracy. Do TV-senders have the requirement to send spots for smaller parties without a fee? No? You should consider learning from democratic states.
My point is, in these comming elections do not vote such and such because you are a geek/woman/black man/white man/polka-dotted-man from mars. Vote vote according to your class: a working man trying to make ends meet. Being a non-US citizen (german) i can only adopt your opinion. Its just damn politics, vote whats good for you, its a simple as that. Yeah, sure, life is tough, so what? You gotta make ends meet, everyone has too. Personaly ild like to do more open source work myself, but real life has kinda precedence. Secure your living first, than do the fun part. I think even Torvalds meant something similiar when he wrote "Survival-Social status-fun" in his biography.
Kid I hate to tell you this, but once upon a time entire businesses were run from the command line. Look up DOS 3.3, 3.31, 4.01, 5.0, and 6.22 I know. I used Dos 3,3 as well. I didnt do anything nearly as complicated back then. But even for simple things it was a pain in the ass without third party tools. ("what" cames to mind, dunno if you still know that)
But as i said, try something non-trivial. Say, some 200 lines with branching. Cmd (or command.com) just aint up to job. Hell, i actually learned a lot about what i was doing in batch files after after switching to linux and actually learned what i did, aside from learning a lot of new tricks.
The truly hardcore guys that know precisely what they are doing drop to the command line - and that's when the serious magic happens. I would not dare to disagree with that statement. And exactly the reason i bashed (no pun intented) cmd in my post.
I am a "highly experienced J2EE person".. Probably should have gone that direction myself, especially after coding a lightweight j2ee-like server.
Well, went J2ME instead.
My least favorite is: are you kewl enough to work in our clubhouse? Kewlness is no substitute for ability.
My advice, dont even waste your time. Just let em fall. Sooner or later their employers/customers will go looking for someone who knows his handwork.
Anyway, I'm a little tired of hearing about "the shortage" when in fact there is none. The "shortage" (IMO) is manufactured. Same here (in Germany). Im getting tired of it as well. All those mummys sons who studied CS cause it was the "in" thing to do with the advertised shortage. Doesnt make live easier for those who actually do what they enjoy (well most of the time) and do well.
As far as i can tell its just a stupid trick to lower wages, fake demand to increase supply of labour. People who choose their job based solely on expected salary rarely are a good choice.
If all you have is a certificate, it may be true, but if you're a Windows shop, why do you care if your admin can use bash? Uhm. You dont have to use cmd.
Have you ever tried to use cmd for anything non-trivial?
It just plains sucks big time. Cmd wasnt created to be used, well at least not as a scriptable shell.
If you ever have a unconventional problem try cmd and go looking for missing keywords/branch conrol.
Come on, this isn't a concept, it is just wishfull thinking with absolutly no bases in reality. My thought exactly, especially after having seen the concept video.
Ok, so this incredible nano-tech does the following:
Bends, everything from screen to electronics.
Changes form to whatever it wants to be.
Cleans itself from dirt.
Acts as a solar panel.
Grows buttons out of nothin.
Cmon, cant it do any of the standard features... like raise the dead, take the dog for a walk, do my job for me etc..
and yes, thats the only thing that is really realiable.
Period.
I only did a couple of semesters of math, physics and electronic engeneering before becoming a softwaredeveloper instead.
Its pretty much impossible to get a "perfect" board, even two simple paralell lines act as a capicator, more or less.
I am pretty sure IBM is damn fucking good. You would probaly only get something equaly good from a cheap manufacturer if its been tested by several revievers and there probably aint no (or really few) customer complaints.
It just aint the same as in software development. There are enough good, well maybe even perfect, guidlines to follow. Unluckily this just aint true for practice. You will allways have to know the limitations (and maybe, for optimisation, strength) of the underlying plattform.
PS: I know the last sentance aint true for "high-level" coders. Go fuck your implementation designers if necesarry.
need to find a problem for the solution.
So its big enough to run the whole web (afaik they werent talking about the internet).
So, who in their right mind could find a problem requiring so much power???
Well, on the other hand it might run Windows2020 with Crysis2020 at an acceptable frame rate.
Yeah i know, this/. but still:
"The present invention is a game playing method and apparatus for automating games such as blackjack, poker, craps, roulette, baccarat and pai gow,..." Later the claims seem to reduce this to card games (didnt know roulette was a card game), but ianal. Aside from that it supposed to be a marketing tool:
"The invention is useful for test marketing of products, advertisements, and reduces advertising costs."
So, as far as i can tell the patent seems crap, even if different crap than some others here seem to have implied. It only combines "online card games" with "targeted advertisement".
My point was that the article is newsworthy.
It may be of interest to you (maybe because you play the exact 5 games or because of some other reason), but that does not make it newsworthy *for slashdot*. Lets put in a different way.
There are 5 less customers who would choose to upgrade Windows? (This is not limited to games!)
Cause they have older software?
Hmm, my certs are in the java field. I dont have to care.
Hey, im a developer, should i be flappergasted by the notion to have something to code?
Most larger companies have always,eg. Sun, Apple, had code guidelines.
Now the "poor" MS-Coders have something to do other than "try it out".
Maybe im really sorry for the MS guys, theyll have to start to earn their money just like everyone else.
And now, just to give probably really everyone here a reason to mod me down, i still can move heavy weights from a to b.
Dow, fuck it, i aint the normal geek.
I dont know who modded parent "troll", but its redicoulus.
Yeah, the first sentance is heating the thing up.
Now commn mod me troll. Just cause you guys are too stupid to figure out simple facts.
Vista was never designed with backwards compatibility in mind.
There were two groups within MS, the "compatibility at all costs" and "the clean start" group.
I dont recall the names associated with those groups, but i recall an old article, at least prior 6-12 month to the launch of Vista. If you remember those names and find that info, youll probaly be modded "informative".
How about you get it. MS isnt as much a pussy as they were. They dont care about incompentent coders in theyre plattform anymore. Sorry for you MS coders, youll have to read the specs in future. Just like everyone else.
Please dont get me wrong here. Im pretty sure Vista will run more games than wine.
I think it's called "science." Geeks are supposed to be into it.
If i have the thesis "Vista is backwards compatible" a single single contradiction disaproves this thesis.
Its called Proof by contradiction.
Thus the question can only be "To which degree is Vista backwards compatible?".
And yes, this test is hardly conclusive. However even MS publishes a white list, so this "backwards compatibility" is hardly a non-issue.
Hold it.
Im sure you can find 5 games that run flawlessly under Vista. Ok, if you consider degraded performance flawless.
Point however is, Vista does not run everything XP does. Those two plattforms are not 100% compatible. Afaik this was a deliberate design decision from MS. Versions up to XP automaticly emulate known bugs from prior versions. Vista doesnt do that anymore.
If you dont mind that Vista doesnt run buggy(1) software, thats fine.
(1) buggy as in: Works as intended, but not according to official specs.
No,
its a really old name.
Now get off my lawn, kid.
Well, i use Linux and write oss as well.
