Or, we could always go back to the original model for mathmeticians...university professors more worried about tenure than progress, or the occasional brilliant rich dilletante who happens to like math more than anything else. Of course, it might take another thousand years to find another breakthrough mathemetician like Newton, but then our conscience would be clear, wouldn't it?
Until then, as you return to your monk's cell this evening calling out "Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem" and banging your head with a piece of wood every few steps, look around at life and wonder what it would be like without the advances that capitalism has wrought for our personal comfort. Wonder also what it would be like if mathemeticians working in secret agencies hadn't broken the Enigma code and read Germany's private mail? Or, if the U.S. hadn't broken the Japanese military code in time to find their fleet at Midway Island?
Competition is generally a good thing, and if companies are competing for math resources, then that makes salaries go up, benefits increase, and more people will want to be mathmeticians. Bad/evil things happen with or without technology or advances in mathematics, don't blame God for it, the people who commit the act(s) are responsible.
Don't tanks, attack helicopters and ground support planes also use scopes?
Optics used on weapons platforms are tradeoffs on power, size, and resolution. There is only so much room on fighter aircraft, and with modern anti-aircraft missiles, it means pilots often work at the limits of the equipment. Advances in electronics have led to advances in optics (Sniper pods, etc) and hopefully DARPA can achieve another breakthrough, but I wouldn't get my hopes up as many of DARPA's projects prove too costly or too tough to engineer at that particular point in time.

Good Email For Kids?

ROFL, this nothing compared to what I USED to be like. Man, I changed diapers and cleaned their little butts, I cooked and fed them food, bought and dressed them up in clothes, I told them when to get up, take naps, and go to bed, I held their hands when we crossed the road, coached their soccer teams, talked to their teachers over report cards, stayed up countless Christmas Eves putting toy kitchens, castles, and bikes together, reviewed homework and hounded them on reports and science projects, and most of all loved them so damn hard my eyes still water thinking of those times. So now when they're older and can wipe/clean/dress/feed themselves and I check on their internet usage, the emails in their accounts and stay up until 0130 in the morning hoping and praying that they'll return safely from prom and homecoming dances, you'll forgive me if I think your answer is crap.
I have them use my main account with their own email addresses. Since I own the main account, I can control their access. I also have the passwords to their computers, so I can read emails and track web usage. I don't regularly check up on them, but every now and then I'll pop in and see what's going on on their computers. If they change passwords to block my access, I block their access out of the house and to the computer. Very effective, only had my bluff called once. Grounded with no XBox, no computer, and no TV can be a powerful motivational tool...
MySpace is hoping to set itself apart from iTunes even further by allowing its users to create an unlimited number of playlists containing up to 100 songs apiece
I have iTunes and I've got a number of playlists with over 100 songs, though I've not tried the "unlimited number of playlists" feature just yet...
Wrong, TFA is about open source software, something the services have been working on for years. The F-35 has open source software for the displays, the Navy CIO has already endorsed open source software, the Army is incoporating it into the Land Warrior program, etc. Congress (and by extension/. by posting this) is behind the power curve, hence my original point stands, it's Old News.
I'm 50 and I've voted in every presidential election since 1976. Besides the Reagan years, this is the easiest decision I've ever made...and no, I'm not going to say who will be my selection as my vote is my business.
I'm over 50yrs old and the forecasts are NOT any better. Weather forecasters still can't get temps within 2-3 degrees 5 days out. 7 day weather models are useless for scheduling outdoor activities. They have the same rate of change to forecasts today as they had 30 years ago. On a regular basis I see weather forecasts change by 3 to 5 degrees 24hrs out.
Doppler radar means they can track weather happening NOW, and that has significantly improved severe weather tracking, but not forecasting. Call me when you can forecast the path of a tornado two days in advance, call me when the weather guy/gal can put up a 7 day forecast and it needs no updating/changing. Otherwise, I'll stick to Summer=hot & humid, Winter=cool & rainy, Spring/Fall= darn near perfect (based on middle Georgia weather patterns).
Heck, the NHC can't even forecast the path of a hurricane more than 3 days out, and that's with supercomputers, multiple models, dozens of PhDs, satellites, aircraft, decades of statistics, etc. In the last 10 years of tracking, the cone of variability beyond 3 days has not shrunk at all, the models are STILL in violent disagreement on which ridge will be more/less influential and how fast it will move. I've read the discussions and more often than not, the forecaster uses the phrase "based on my/our judgement...", and "I/We feel..".
And last, but not least, global warming theories will NEVER be accepted at the average joe level until weather forecasting at the local level gets a whole lot more accurate. Scientist can say what they will about forecasting 1 to 2 degree changes over dozens to scores of years, but until you can prove you can forecast the weather at my house, don't try to tell me you can forecast the world's weather.
Many of these volunteers were....volunteers, and volunteered to go back to Iraq and Afghanistan time and again. Most came from middle class backgrounds, high school diploma, sometimes some college. The vast majority leave the military in a) better shape; b) better educated; and c) with better job prospects. And I speak from experience, 21 years, 9 months, 17 days worth...
Rotating license plate technology that uses GPS to automatically rotate the gaphic of a clenched fist with middle finger extended when going past red light cameras...
I say good for the Chinese, now they can spend the $$ and manhours dodging their space junk...maybe it will teach them to be a little more circumspect about blowing things up in space.
I assume you mean off-shore drilling and not diving near a platform. Drilling technology has progressed significantly since then. Manufacturing standards are much higher and require independent 3rd party witnesses on quality inspections, as well there are much newer sealing and retrieval technologies in use so little, if any, escapes. Now, some always does, nothing is 100% perfect, but the leakage is several orders of magnitude less than it was in previous decades. Lawsuits by environmentalists drove technology changes, as well as legislative requirements to safeguard the environment.
Life is abundant near oil rigs, in fact, much more so than in open locations. The food chain begins with the platform's legs and goes all the way up to the top rung of predator fish. They are protected from over fishing because the trawlers can't get near, and sport fishing doesn't take enough to harm the population. Diving is usually pretty good, too, with lots of visibility. Some studies indicate that less oil seepage comes from off shore platforms than from natural leakage (Santa Barbara is a case in point).
It's like the trash in your collage apartment; let it start stinking first and then someone will take it out.
I give it about three days.
It's like the trash in your college apartment. Let it start stinking first and then everyone will continue to ignore it until the neighbors complain of the flies.
I give it about 3 weeks.
It's called Bed, and it starts automatically when I close my eyes. 25 years ago I installed the "Wife" Upgrade. The Upgrade can be intermittent and touchy, but really delivers in the clinches...
Where did we park?
Really? A score of 2 for something that's A: Offtopic; and B: Completely ludicrous?
Is she pretty?

And, who modded this guy informative?
Open Source is already in use on a number of newer platforms, nothing new here.
As a diver, the thought of virtually exploring shipwrecks just makes me shake my head and chuckle
Amen, brother! The ability to slip the surly bonds of dirt and glide for (too short) periods beneath the waves is far better than riding the couch.
Isn't this just another step to the Matrix?
