Or go feel free to dig up said 386, install DOS or Win 3.1, and let us know just how much you love it.
Hell No, I'm going to run Dos 6.2.2 on a 286 with a meager 20M hard drive. Even got a color monitor for the thing along with a nice dot-matrix printer. Very useful and allows me to actually use much of the old software I have.
Could I install WFW 3.11 on it? Yep as I have a copy but I need to find a damn 5.25 floppy drive so I can transfer the files over to them from 3.5 disks.
I see this quite frequently with some idiot asking how he couldn't determine that he was roaming.
First off as the Stinking Summary Says. He was using a Wireless Data Card (Modem) in his laptop not a damn phone. The big question I have to ask is why his bill was so high to begin with because with a data plan, he shouldn't have been able to connect at all through the ships phone network. Simply put, they don't have enough bandwidth to support data usage. The other thing is who screwed up and activated the system while the ship was in port?
I gave the Imap access a shot with Kmail and although it worked pretty decently, I'm actually happier with the Pop3 access for the simple reason that I've got a local copy of the message on my system. As to whether I want Gmail to delete anything, hell no it's very nice to know that I have copies of all my gmails and can download everything again should I have a system failure on my end.
I have to agree with you on this. Anything that can install a plug-in w/o using the Firefox add-on manager is a potential security flaw that needs to be fixed yesterday if not earlier because as you said, it will be exploited by malware once they realize just how easy it is. Hell this falls into the same class as the IE active-x flaws we've screamed about for years so why does Firefox deserve any forgiveness for such a security flaw?
I noticed this even on Gentoo where everything I run is compiled from source code. For me Firefox hangs badly when hitting Google sites such as gmail and groups. Why? when under Windows (XP/Vista32/64) it doesn't and I wish the firefox devs would get off their asses to fix the problem especially if all it takes is the creation of a single GPO profile to do it.
That truck has an alternator that probably puts out 55A peak at 12V, most likely only 30A for long periods.
More likely that the truck has at least a 90 amp alternator that could go as high as 150 amps depending on usage. For example, a fully loaded 4 wheel drive truck with lift kit and multiple shocks, plus multiple-off road lights would use a minimum of a 120 amp alternator just to handle the lighting load.
In a commercial truck (class 6-8) the minimum alternator is 90 ampps for class 6 (3 axles) with the class 8 (Heavy Semis) having anything between 110 to 180 amps. This is due to not only the lighting loads of said trucks (U.S. DOT minimum standards) but also various additional technology installed in such trucks. Things like satelite comm systems, collision avoidance radar (front/right side), electric mirrors with heating elements for ice/fog, electronic engine/transmisson controls, stability controls and things like Lift Gates or hoists and cranes, all of which draw plenty of power.
All of this boils down to the damn American Belief that More is Better, which is absolutely foolish IMO
MS needs to dump the "All Users" concept and switch to the *nix.skel concept. Hell drive space is not a concern anymore so there is no longer any reason not to copy icons into each user profile instead of a shared profile. I suspect that if MS switched to this and used proper folders in the profile directories under Vista/Win7 folks would not see any UAC prompts unless they actually needed to.
This ammendment to the United States Constitution gives me the right to Not Testify against Myself and it will be the Constintutional Clause that strikes this idea deader then a door knob (yes some have more brains then a politition.
My system consumes no more power in S5 mode then it does when powered down. The reason for this is the Wake on Hardware support that requires 5 watts max. Don't have any hardware with such needs so both modes consume the same amount of power, which raises the question "Why Should I do a full Power Down?"
Instead Bitch to the web master for failing to comply with either the U.S. ADA (americans with disabilities act)or the EU disabilities act if they're a commercial website. Works wonders and if they basically tell you to "Sod Off Sucker" then simply forward their reply to the appropriate authorities and prepare to inudate them with a federal/eu investigation.
But the main point is that by Default Windows Update enables all critical updates to be downloaded and installed Silently and w/o user intervention. Simply put, What MS is doing is Hijacking an Alternate Browser through it's usage of Windows Update. This is not an acceptable action by any company and MS should have their feet held to the Coals in return for violating even their usual minimal level of ethics.
Well I've used XP XP/SP2/Sp3 XP64 Vista32 Vista64 SP1 and I'm currently running Vista64 SP2-Beta alongside a Win7-64 version and can state they appear the same. So based on your statement
Windows 7 is NOT Vista SP2
is in correct based on my experience using both of them.
Vista just to get shit done and now that I'm running Vista SP2 Beta (Win7-Beta) I can't see switching back to Linux just for principles. Sure I'm wearing my Abestos undies so flame away but the truth is, I simply couldn't get enough work done under Linux to justify using it.
Well I'm not a ludite nor am I a senior citizen but I've finally figured out what I want from my internet connection and it's not the speed. Hell I got by fine on a 24k dialup for years and was able to download plenty of large files. What I've found important is the always on connection. Simply put, give me something like a 128/128 and I'd be happy 90 percent of the time since I use Firefox and multiple tabs. Easy enough to have the others loading in the background while looking at the/. frontpage.
The only Time I need or even want much more bandwidth is to download movies. Otherwise, I could care less about updates or other so called services like YouTube (have them blocked in host to save bandwidth and not bother me with garbage). For those thinking it's an expense issue, it really is perceived value. Does the broadband offer me anything that I want or need? If not, why in hell get it?
how about for those pesky temp files that Windows seems to always want to keep around like the Page/Swap file and Temp Internet Files along with all the other/temp files. Instead of having those problems, simply place em into an 8GB ramdisk that looks like a proper drive to Windows and get rid of the battery.
Or you have people like me that have accumulated several old clunkers. Some Run and Some Don't. Give me 4 of these vouchers at $4500, and I'd have enough to not only get rid of the old ones but by using trade-in for my running model, get a new car with the warranty and far better fuel milage then anything I have right now.
I'm assuming that the O.P. is using the onboard NIC to perform these speed tests. If they are, then yes the extra system memory makes the difference. Simply put, an onboard NIC has to use system memory to handle it's off loading, which is why a dedicated NIC is going to be even faster - not only does it include dedicated memory but it does its own processing, thus completely off-loading the tcp/ip stack from the cpu/system resources. As a final note, the Linux system is still using the original BSD TCP/IP stack that Win2k and earlier versions used. As of XP, MS changed the entire stack (reinveting the damn wheel) trying to break Samba and increase vendor lock-in but instead they increased network overhead for XP/Vista and all later versions of windows (requiring network upgrades to be factored in for Vista Adoption that killed it for businesses).
Because this is a follow up article. The first article includes the Roi figures along with the fact that California Rebated half the cost of the system ($36,000.00 dollars), which explains his up front costs of $36,000.00. Not bad for the size system he had installed and yes I've read the first article and understood the reasoning for the selected installation method, which was to reduce peak Energy Usage during Peak Summer Cost. That's right, his goal was to cut the summer cost of energy during the most expensive part of the year from PG&E (his uutility company).
Note that PG&E has a variable Rate cycle that has the greatest impact during the summer cooling period. This is why he wanted to reduce his summer electric costs, which the system did quite successfully.
if this tag is that readable, then it has uses in automated wharehouses/product tracking/UPS-FedEx-Postal systems and a whole rash of others that don't depend on the MS system to be usable. Hell use em on ID badges with scanners at reasonable height for ACS setups. Even makes sense for Mandated ID cards (government issued)
This is one of the biggest issues I have with Vista itself. You simply can't share fiels/folders/printers on a home network because the security settings are too paranoid but Win7 actually configures itself to properly work with other systems (sets a workgroup PW) and it's the only thing needed to access shared resources, unlike Vista that requires each user to actually have an account on the damn thing.
As to performance. Can't say I noticed anything better then what Vista Business 64 with SP2(beta) gives me. C2D 1.8Ghz 4GB and 320GB Seagate 7200.10 SATA. Do not use it on a Hitachi 80GB 7200 IDE deskstar drive though. Damn thing is dog slow (got a 2.1 drive rating - My seagate under vista gets 5.7) and it has a noticable impact on performance. In other words, a fast vista system wont see any performance gain but anything that is borderline useful should.

already done - they're now working on cost reductions

Turn in your Geek Card. You forgot Itanium, which makes it 5.

Sounds about right for my Vista64 Business system to wake from S5 STR mode. Course this is on an Intel Board with a C2D and 4gb of memory.
