While I can't comment specifically on San Diego's situation I know that up here in British Columbia, there have been fires that firefighters had no chance of stopping, yet millions were spent to 'make an effort' so the politicians could at least say they tried to protect homes.

A better strategy (in these specific fires) should have been to let the fires burn and either not waste the taxpayers money, or to give the money that would have been spent on fighting the fire to those whose homes burned down.

You simple minded fool! Since Bush recently acknowledged the existence of climate change and the remote possibility that it may be our fault, he has implemented a far-reaching bureaucratic nightmare, that violates passengers privacy in the sole hope of increasing prices and discouraging travellers. This is even a multi-national effort as these new regulations also apply to flights that travel (but not take-off or land) in US airspace.

These new regulations should drastically reduce the US's carbon footprint and all you can do is complain. Typical. Wont someone please think of the children!

  6. Re:Labels Wising Up? on Yahoo Exec Says "Enough DRM" · · Score: 1

I think the labels (or at least some of them) have realized that they have to compete with the free music available on P2P. The first step in competing with free is to increase the value for customers, and DRM does the opposite. DRM reduces the value of purchased music, it limits how the music can be consumed (ie play for sure wont play on your iPod) and eliminates fair-use.

The challenge facing the labels (or Bands that decide to go it alone ala Radiohead et al.) will be how to continue making a living in a world where music can be downloaded for free on P2P networks.

What Happens If Office Updates Are Not Current and the Compatibility Pack Is Not Installed?

If neither the Office Update nor the Compatibility Pack is installed when users of Office XP or Office 2003 attempt to open a 2007 Microsoft Office system file, they will be notified that the file cannot be opened and they will be presented with the standard Microsoft Windows interface for handling unknown file types. By selecting the "Use a Web service to find the appropriate program" option, users will be directed to the Compatibility Pack download site that instructs them to first update Office with all the latest service packs and updates, and then install the Compatibility Pack. If the installation of Office XP and Office 2003 is current with security fixes and updates, Word, Excel or PowerPoint will direct the user to the download page for the Compatibility Pack. Office 2000 users will be directed to the Compatibility Pack download site as well.

when an old version of office opens a docx file it asks if you want to download and install the compatibility pack. click OK and its installed. It's very painless, and only requires a few clicks of next/OK buttons.

If the user doesn't have the privileges to install the file, then there is usually an IT department/guy who can and probably should install this for them.

Say what you will about the technical merits of docx, but MS had done a good job or ensuring the new file format works well with older versions of MS office.
