    The recycle bin only works if it's a well-behaved GUI app.

    Do this...

    START->RUN->COMMAND and hit enter.

    type in

    DEL c:\*.* and hit enter.

    If you're asked any questions - say 'yes'

    Now.... Try to find your files in the "Recycle Bin."

    If a certain sequence of bits on the disk was originally 1011010010001011101001, and it got overwritten with 0110101101010010101111, how -- barring psychics, voodoo, and fairy dust -- can the original be recovered?

    By reading the slop in between tracks. The writes look more like layers, with little bit of data poking out from the edges, to a scanning electron microscope.

    Think of paint layers - at the edge, you can somtimes pick out the previous colors and the order that they were painted.

    Of course, this isen't for meere mortals. People like the CIA get to play with this stuff.

    That's a great theory. Too bad you're wrong.

    Crime in England and France and Germany is *HIGHER* than in the US.

    Here are Interpol 2001 crime statistics (rate per 100,000):

    * 4161 - US
    * 7736 - Germany
    * 6941 - France
    * 9927 - England and Wales

    Take the filesystem offline. NOW!

    Then use dd to copy the partition to another partion/disk. Then mess with the copy.

    A lot of silesystems do a good job at keeping files and their blocks in order. I've had luck with *BSD file-system by grepping for somthing at the begining of the file and grabbing a big chunk of data afterwords. This works great for MS Office Documents, JPEG or anthing that begins with a known preamble.

    This may not work for your filesystem.

    I only said you couldn't compare Geneva and DC.

    Given that it's impossible to create a true double-bline expriment - DC and Geneva are the best cities that I've been able to find.

    Of course that ignores a whole lot of other socio-economic factors. You really compare two very dissimilar cities.

    Both are medium sized cities filled with diverse populations. The median income is about the same in both.

    What are you implying?

    A great compairson between cities is

    Washington DC,USA: Guns are illegal. Crime is *VERY* high.

    Geneva, Switzerland. Gun ownership is *MANDATORY* for Swiss Armed Forces at home. Crime is *VERY* low.

    why can't you just ignore the GPL?

    As a user... you can ignore the GPL. You can use the software as you see fit.

    As a distributer of GPL'ed software - you have to get permission from the copyright holder to copy the software, or, if you'd like, follow the terms of the GPL.

    With an EULA, you have to get permission from the copyright holder to copy the software. (Fat chance). Or.... nothing. EULA's don't give you permission to copy software at all.

    Imagine a windowed UNIX-like, pre-emptive multitasking OS with all the goodies: swap files, networking, hot-swap devices, assembler, shell scripting, a pcode language.

    Running in 1982....

    On a $500 computer.....

    I'll let that sink in. OS-9 really was cool.

    You're in as root, no login required, and it even tells you how to mount local filesystems writable.

    I love my Mac, but Mac OS X is not a secure OS.


    All of the *BSD assume that if you have local physical access to the machine, that you should be able to reset the root password.

    You can fight this by encrypting portions of your file-system - at boot time, you unlock the encrypted filessystem with a pass-phrase. If somone reboots your computer, of turns off the power - they would have to get you to unlock the file-system, and even if they set themselves up as root, they woulden't have access.

    If you have a low account numbber under 1000 - you can still use slashdot's 1-800 dial-up number with your 300 baud modem. Besure to set your parity to 7 and not 8.

    TTY service to Slashdot has been down for the last year though...

    kind of like the windows server line - the basic license only allows 5 clients to connect at a time.

    Actually, if you have only one network card - you can't connect more that one computer at a time. Ethernet is a serial protocall - sure it switches really fast so it seems like everybody has a perment connection.

    So unless you have 6 network cards or do somtihng really odd - Any computer can only server one other computer at a time.

    Actually, we expected a lot of push-back from our suppliers, but they have migrated rather easily. A few of the smaller ones have ditched MS Office for their own work - they love the price and it "heads down keep working" productutivity.

    We just got tired of all the difering versions of MS Office documents and coulden't stomach another round of MS "Upgrades" - we took some of our money we saved and had a vendor appreciation party. Lots of free booze and a great meal makes everybody happy.

    The only thing we can't find a replacement for is Outlook - the scheduling bits of it are quite good. (The Email portion sucks, and we don't allow anbody to use Outlook for their email for securty reasons)

    All of our suppliers *must* use OO. No excuses. If they want our business, then they play by our rules.

    Now we do have a few MS Office copies around for our customers - we play 'nice' with them.
