    Windows has a native 64-bit version but Intel have prompted MS to delay the release until they can come up with a competitive processor.

    Actually, the delay in Windows64 was trying to come up with a new prefix for all the hungarian-notaion in their code.

    I think they settled on the following for a 64 bit pinter to a string: pllpsexsfeString

    A system with only 128MB or RAM is NOT a server in today's world. Ten years ago maybe but not today.

    I have servers with 8MB - and they kick ass for what they need to do.

    They do the following:

    LDAP authentication.
    VPN.
    Fileserving.
    Repmote backup.
    Database replication and backup.

    Redundant disks only protect you from hardware failure. You still need to make backups to recover from human failure.

    RAID alos wont protect from...

    Viruses/Trogens that wipe the file-system.
    Bad memory sticks that cause file-system corruption.
    Flaky RAID controllers that randomly screw up a stripe now and then.
    A netowrk card that sends bad packets and causes the filesystem to bork.
    Bugs in your uber-filesystem that cause corruption. (NTFS I'm looking at *YOU*)
    Power spikes that go through tour surge protectory, into your power supply and through the 12v line that connects to the hard-drives and frys the controllers.
    New useres playing with the rm command.
    "What do you meand, the server doesen't have a 'Recycle Bin'?? !!? ?? "

    All the these things *have* happend to me.

    there is no notebook out there that can manage to have 7 months of uptime with a high cpu usage without burning out or hanging all the time ...

    We use old IBM thinkpads as remote database servers in some jobsites - The have worked quite well over the years under load.

    I'm pretty sure it was chosen for the people and not by the people.

    Even most desmocracies were set up by the powerfull and not the 'people' - usuall powerfull internal forces (the revolutionaries with big ideas and lots of guns) or by powerfull outside forces (the invading armby with big ideas and lots of guns).

    We can't have this much failure in the US Govenment!!!

    These security grades are obviously created by the MAN to keep their security grades up while making everybody else look BAAAAAAD.

    We need a newer test that encompases more to make it fair. I sugues we measure the following to determine if their security grades.

    Are their packet-filter inclusive?
    Do they secure Appletack, Tokenring or just Ethernet?
    To the set aside special days and allow special packets in?
    To they support 2 letter passwords, and not just the 8 letter ones that advantaged people can type?
    Do their proxy servers filter out gender discriminatory words like 'He' or 'Mister'?
    Do their computers have master/slave IDE systems?

    Just and example of how the curent test is biasedh

    OpenBSD on SUN hardware is even better: Sparc chips have built in executable protection.

    Sparc hardware nativly allows processes to set chunks of memory as "allow code execution, but don't allow self-modifying code".

    Unfortunatly curent x86 hardware lacks this feature without a lot of work.

    A computer is a tool, nothing more, nothing less. I've got no emotional attachment to it whatsoever.

    I actually had a fondness for my old TRS-80. It was a tool, but it was a *FUN* tool.

    Modern x86 Windows boxes arn't much fun - you just maintain them and if you're lucky, you can get some work done.

    Linux and Mac useres tend to actaully *like* their tools - sort of how a good woodworker likes his hand-made chisels.

    An easy way to wipe MS Office is to inform the BSA about all the piracy that goes on...
