    I've actually chose to sit near the planes engines recently, just to enjoy the increased din.

    People don't talk when the plane cabin is really noisy - they shut the hell up beacuse they have a hard time understanding each other, and I can get some sleep.

    Especually annoying are people who come form any country remotly close to the equator - for some dumb reason, all those cultures TALK REALLY FUCKING LOUD. WITH THEIR HANDS WAVING. And they jaber about stupid things - LIKE THEIR CHICKNENS OR THEIR LOWERED IMPALA. OR THEIR QUICKY MART.

    So for maximum enjoyment of your flight - sit right begind where the jets are attached, next to the skinny Iniut and the blonde Swede - If they do start blabing, at least it will be interesting.

    I second this - If I open up a 'white box' and I find a Sparkle in there - it gets replaced then and there. No sense in having to replace it later.

    Perhaps Sparkle has gotten better, I don't know or care. Their past reputation with me has earned them a permenent spot in my 'shitty hardware/software list'.

    Sparkle is right above MS BOB, and right below IOMEGA in the list.

    Strangly - I did this and on my first try I got a working Windows kernel: Just like the real deal, it just sits there doing nothing.

    Go is an interesting way to spend time - you can relax your anylitical mind and just let the tactical beauty of the game influance your next move. It's also not as comptetive as Chess - I remember chess wins and losses, but my games of Go are catagoriesed as either fun or bland.

    Chess, to me, is a General mashaling troops to battle. Go is like a child playing in the sandbox - having fun, exploring, trying new ideas, making castles.

    and they've even laid out most of the map/travel computer controls on the passenger side, so the driver isn't looking for restaurants while speeding through busy intersections.

    A lot of Japanese car equipment layout doesen't make sense untill you realise that their home market drivers sit on the right side of the vehicle.

    For example - a lot of Japanes cars have the climate-control mode switch on the left side, close and conveinet to an American driver. This doesen't make any sene for the American driver as you only change modes a few times a day - and the frequently fiddled-with temperature and fan controlls are on the far right.

    From a right-sitting driver, of course, this layout makes sense.

    For cars with a lot of production, Japanese companys do switch the layout for us left sided drivers.

    You've never met any french people, have you? The most macho, gay-bashing, intolerant men I've ever met. It always shocks me that americans insist on characterizing french men as being feminine.

    First of all, my post was a joke - written from the viewpoint of an idiot. It was a work of fiction, not my own viewpoint. Especially because I've had the fortune to spend two months (in total) driving around France and having a good time. Caragorising the 'Frech' as anything, is just a silly as catagorising 'Americans' as anyhting - they come in all stripes. The hearty people in the Basque region, too the gettoes of Paris - It's a diverse, and cool, country.

    As an aside, I never was treated rudly, curly or any way othere that nicly. I love France and especically her people, and have made friends there.

    Close off ports 137 and 138 on any WAN connections. Of course, any competent windows network admin already knows this.

    I can't find a port setting on my NT Lan Manager - what are you talking about?

    Are you useing that TCP/IP thing? That's for hackers on the internet.

    You should be useing NetBEUI - now that's a stable protocall, made by the fine folks at Microsoft. Not one of those "Internet" (read: hacker) protocalls made by one of those unwashed UNIX people.

    I've heard the MSN is going to move to NetBEUI - so I know it's the network protocall of the future!

    If you can't use NetBEUI - at least give Banyan Vines a try. Works great with our Windows for Workgroups!

    Stay away from OS/2 - thats bad Mojo. Amiga people like OS/2 so I know it's bad.

    There is a lot of fun to be had with 5.1 - it's a good gimic for SciFi flicks and the such. With popcorn in a bowl and some friends over - 5.1 with a cool subwoffer can't be beat.

    For pure audio, with the lights dimmed and all distractions removed - I just prefer my audio to come out of a good amp with two excelent speakers - or better yet - excelent headphones.

    Casettes broke and were non-random access. CD were vastly more reliable, and you could skip the filler tracks on most contract-bands. Oh, and they sounded better.

    My point being - what non-quality reasons are there for me to move to these new formats?

    I've already moved my mucic to a network: I can access all of my music anywhere there's a net connection and there are no jewel cases to lose.

    Be damed if I'm going back to physical media just to gain 'headroom' or for a third channel... .... Maby when I get a third ear, I'll need the third speaker.

    Interesting viewpoint- I'm kind of the opposite: I wish for file systems to become more database like. Especially transactions:

    I'd love to tell the os/filesystem to do the following in one atomic action:

    make world ; script_to_fungle_etc_files ; backup_to_some_other_server ; reboot

    and it would either complete fully or fail and rollback.

    I'd like to do this for my /home/mp3 folder:

    select files from /home/mp3 where doesent_suck(artist) | mp3_player

    and views would be cool:

    I could point my grandmother's file browser to open up the file system in a simplified view of the whole network.

    I understand your points and certainly agree: there is much abuse of poor MySQL - I just hope that MySQL or our file-systems can rise to the task.

    Study your tools a bit better beofre casting stones at one of them.

    What fetures of a "real DBMS" would have helped in this case? Transactions? Rollbacks? Inner-Joins? Sub-selects?

    MySQL is a fast psudo-database. It's fast. That's the point.

    If MySQL crashed under load, or failed in under load - none of the real ACID dataqbases would have fared better given the same resources.

    MySQL is perfect for this sort of suff - data that's not important, served quickly, and just because it doesen't meet the criteria for use in other endevours doesen't make it unsutable for this one.

    AFAIK - the Kernel and Darwin are C, but hey, I'd like to know if otherwise.

    I love C++, templates, and think nothing of derfrrencing a pointer to a vector of objects that are stored in a crazy containter that I cobbeled together last night while high on cough syrup and mountain dew:

    However -

    Objective C kicks ass for GUI apps. It's easy to learn, and hides some of c's rough edges, and it's fast to compile. Make no mistake - nobody's going to code the next operatig system in it - but for GUI apps, take this good tool and run with it.

    If you need a cheap motorised gyro - old IDE hard drives with metal platters are supprisingly good and strong. They do spin down quickly when their power is removed.

    The family members of someone "hiding" either know where the person is, or can contact the person.

    Fortunatly or unfortunalty, depending on your viewpoit at the time, Law enforcemnt people can't force someone to rat on their family felon.

    But It could give you a head start if you're good at 'persuading' people.

    Not high tech but it works.
