Auditor is correct that md5 probably isn't as good as many people think it is (** for certain ways it's used) Auditor is incorrect in that crypt is not really a good alternative either.

Not like we didn't go through this before guys.. remember most dialup used to be like this.. then a company came around and said 'oh look.. UNLIMITED'.. then everyone went unlimited because they had to if they wanted to keep marketshare. Of course the problem is it was alot easier, and alot more choice, in Dialup.. basically, from my limited understanding, what Google in theory wants to do with Fiber (you have the pipe, who/what internet service you pick is up to you?).
Let the companies charge for usage I say. But also let people become infuriated by it! Maybe enough of them will standup, cause someone to notice and create Unlimited plans again, and the people that care can get back to 'Unlimited' access again for another 10 years before the circle comes back around.
Largely the same deal here.. we have: 1 garbage can (city bills it, but it's just simplified billing for a private firm that does the actual work), you pay for the size you order, collection is 1x week. (other cities in my state have HUGE cans, collected 2x week.. which just seems crazy to me) 1 'paper' bin.. pretty much anything except pizza boxes can go in it.. if you put pizza boxes, they will take them out and leave you note saying why you can't recycle those (put them in your garbage instead), and take the the rest. 1 'plastic, glass and metal' bin.. for pretty much everything else. all types.
Yard waste is collected for free.. I think they compost it or are going to use it to feed a biomass plant. They recently added a 'large item' curbside collection as well (old appliances, furniture, etc) and curb-side 'e-scrap'.
Our local area wanted people to actually recycle, so they made it fairly easy on us. That's the simple rule if you want customer buy in.. the added benefit is I get to use a smaller 'garbage' can because most of my waste can go in one of those 'free' bins.
^ This ^ Although we're a ISP grown from a Telecom.. so we have large DC plants at most of our sites anyway, so for us, it's just asking our vendors for DC options... most vendors DO have DC PSU options.. it's more of a pain to adapt to the annoying 21" 2-post telecom racks we have..:/
"Do we give them enough money to survive or do we do as the Libertarians suggest and let them die from the crime of not being useful enough?"
In your example, I think Libertarians would suggest he start his own business of hand-made furniture and charge 100x the standard IKEA rate for hand-quality work, also they would have suggested, if possible, he did something to save for retirement (or have his house paid off so minimal expenses.. so on)... note the 'if possible' part.. it's not possible for everyone.. this I know.
Assuming you're not interested in Film: check out DPReview.com, I think it's really a good solid place for things like $/performance. This is a recommendation, not an advertisement.
Wish I had mod-points for this.. I approve of this higher-level thought process. However, the OP left out his actual role in this process.. it's possible he's being given a Divine Mandate of how it's supposed to be done (that is: network backup)
Because they are both contemporary-era FPS shooters? You're allowed to compare things that fall into similar categories you know.. that doesn't mean they are the same or equal..
Sounds great until Andrew, not knowing the file exists (because he never looked apparently...) reformats his machine or the drive array becomes irrecoverably corrupted before you're able to setup a replacement, or Brian and you are on a camping trip and both die in the same rockslide. If you're going to jump through hoops to have your passwords passed on, you should at least make the system more robust.
A palette jack != forklift. Also, the palette jacks I've used probably weighed more around 35-60lbs or so . heavy for sure, and your point is still valid, just not as fantastic as you hoped (well it could have been moving 70-100lbs of equipment, that'd give you the 150lb weight)
That said, I need to get a BB removed from my forehead before I get slammed into an MRI..
"Google says people should consider things like the amount of gasoline saved when someone conducts a Google search rather than, say, driving to the library."
This is exactly akin to Software/Content makers saying that every piracy count is exactly one lost sale. If I had to actually drive to the library, I wouldn't actually DRIVE each time I was wondering about some trivial answer to a meaningless question.
All of that said, data centers use electricity.. if we want to do anything e- or i- (or o- or u-, and sometimes y-) we need to realize that. Google is well aware of how much it spends on electricity, and I'm pretty sure they take steps to try and minimize their expenses (such as using warm-boxes instead of cooling ambient air, etc..)
Um no.. Technology still has to be built.. in a factory.. using Labour and Capital, but it's true that not every job is a factory type job anymore, so to probably go with what you're thinking; Technology has just changed the nature of what people think 'Capital' is. Capital now are servers, hardware, and "The Cloud". Some entity/person still have to construct, maintain, and operate all of that infrastructure to let those bloggers (who are the 'new' labor) work, and said entity/person has that Technological Capital. Also, as much as I hate to say it, there is in fact 'Intellectual Capital' now.. Patents being 900-lb gorilla of that realm, and that goes very much with the idea that Marx and Company had regarding what Capital is.
> Now watch as the low UIDs to take over the discussion on this post.
Actually even just getting to this post it's been a low-ID-a-thon, and one that makes my paltry low-6er blush.. (although in my defense, I didn't register until I had something to say.. so long time reader before that anyway).
Regardless, it'll be interested to see if/. moves in another direction, what Taco goes on to do (if anything... hopefully he's been successful enough that he could just retire if he wanted to?), and so on.
'With the aid of a special component, the modulator, we turn the LEDs off and on in very rapid succession and transfer the information as ones and zeros.
I bet they had something to read the modulator signals on the other side.. an Anti-Modulator perhaps? They could come up with some cool acronym for this system.. MOAMO ? noo.. i'm sure there's something better..
That's pretty much due to how accurate the published data is. Some network operators have turn-by-turn directions of thier fiber paths in urban areas.. others only publish "it goes from pt A to B.. that's all you need to know".
Guam is a hub because it's a US Terrority centrally located in the Pac Ocean. It's not like the people in Guam have 1000-count fiber into thier houses, it's just a landing facility.. much like Re: SA->Africa: Someone(s) wanted it enough to pay/bond it.. so it got built.. *shrug*
Stop with your 3050 era stuff already.. I want low-tech Battle Tech (3025).. ..oh and LAMs.. definable need LAMs..
