    One of the Banks I go to, the one near my college, does EVERYTHING instantaneously. You deposit money, it is now in your checking account.

    Hah. I love how banks instantaneously deduct card transactions and even checks from your account, but you must wait at least few days for the portion of any deposit over $100 to kick in.

    If I didn't have direct deposit I'd ask you where you bank. Citibank dosen't count because they don't have meatspace tellers anywhere.

    I believe the majority of what you say is bullshit. You're thinking of the department of Homeland Security, specifically the ICE. But modern cops do tend to be clueless about electronic crime.

    I can't get at TFA right now (EFF slashdotted?!) but I suggest you read the actual PDF of the justification to grant the search warrant. The detective's so-called credentials (after he left land management) include a page and a half of fluffed-up 1-hour cybercrime seminars.

    The dorm room search stemmed from an investigation into who sent an email to a Boston College mailing list alleging that another student was gay.

    Lotta Catholics in Boston, and as we all know Catholics are among the most zealous and hypocritical of all the religious idiots. Pontificate and bash gays by day, homosexually molest by night.

    I bet the two were former lovers and had a bitter custody battle over the iPod after the relationship went sour.

    Since the few of you who have responded to my above post seem to lack a sense of association, let me explain why I mentioned Silverlight:
    • RIAA throws a lot of money at Obama, obama installs their lawyers in DOJ
    • Microsoft throws a lot of money at the Obama campaign, Obama campaign streams inaguration using Silverlight.

    Of course, that's common sense. Now let's hope this example is a sign of things to come:

    • Microsoft throws a lot of money at MLB, MLB uses silverlight to stream their games...only this time, it dosen't work out after they realize what a stupid move it was.

    The RIAA are beginning to have their asses kicked in court because more and more people are standing up and speaking out against them, thanks to the guidance of the EFF and Beckerman types. Obama could have installed them as a favor for campaign contributions, but how long they stay after that is fair game. And if they piss off enough people, they won't stay long. That's why we must keep fighting to have the ACTA revealed.

    RIAA lawyers are not necessarily the "cream of the crop", it's just that men will kill their own grandmas if you throw enough money at them. Look at the way Microsoft tries to shove Silverlight down our throats!

    Youtube is failing because all of the stuff worth watching was coincidentally all the stuff they removed for DMCA-related reasons.

    On top of that, the few videos that I like that they didn't remove are much harder to find using the new search system. When I youtube, I'm looking for something specific and I don't want to have to wade through hundreds of teenagers' insignificant opinions, cretinous hammy behavior, or unimaginative video collages.

    The "you" in Youtube will be the death of it.

    Some ATMs are designed to perform in this way - your card is not returned until you have completed whatever function(s) you began.

    So a person distracted with music or a cell phone takes their money from the ATM and for some reason runs off, leaving their card.

    Around these parts it used to be that way, now it's the opposite: you make your transaction, and the machine spits out your card and prompts you to take it before it spits out the money and/or receipt. YMMV.

    MS and / or Yahoo should be looking at Twitter seriously. It's the real deal.

    You're on the right track, but why should Microsoft or Yahoo buy Twitter while both of them have their instant messengers? Add a little paragraph to their EULA saying that all user content belongs to them(if they haven't already, and most people will just click through it anyway) and they have the equivalent of a million Twitters' user data and conversations to strip-mine to their heart's content!

    Consolidation of both userbases would be the only thing out of a merger which would make sense!

    No, I hope you're joking. Sun's bundling Yahoo Toolbar with java is bad enough. If Oracle were to buy Sun, it would be in their best interests to stop that immediately unless they don't want to be taken seriously. Choice rant from the link:

    ...software upgrades need to be elegant and streamlined. Bundling in a browser toolbar cheapens the whole experience because it starts looking just like so many other crapware applications that plague the PC industry.

    Right. I'm puzzled at why so many here are knee-jerkedly boo-ing the court's decision. Slashdotters are supposed to be freedom-loving folks who demand that law enforcement and prosecution play by the rules. I bet they'd be cheering the decision if it were Stallman or TBP's asses on the line. Overzealous law enforcement and prosecution is a BIG problem these days, especially since Bush took charge.

    It's time we slap their wrists and say "No! Bad lawyer! Bad Cop!" and make 'em sit in the corner for awhile. They don't play by the rules, they face punishment through the very laws they claim to be upholding. Sanction their asses.

    I'd rather see a few O.J.s or Ted Stevens go free than thousands of innocents jailed through miscarriages of justice!

    No way. This is not about "national security" in the sense of busting terrorists and preventing catastrophic damage. It's about control, plain and simple. There are no credible threats. Is this, busting some loser ice cream man after paying a shady informant a quarter-million bucks (commonplace even while many Americans are jobless and starving), the best that they can do?

    Sweeping powers like rampant warrantless wiretapping will always be abused. Why care if you're not up to anything? Surely you won't mind if I follow you around and read over your shoulder, or even follow your wife into the restroom to make sure that she's not doing anything illegal. Huh. You'd think that we would be better than to allow state-sponsored voyeurism. But it's for your own good - the terrorists and pedophiles are out to get you!

    Like Newsweek? I took these examples from the website but the print editions are worse - more than half the mag is dedicated to ads and pop culture BS. If they don't want the internet to eat their lunch then they should print a magazine worth reading. Sure, Newsweek isn't exactly the New Yorker or Foreign Policy magazine, but it's really went downhill from being the respectable news rag I read as a kid.
