As far as I know, they pushed back the deadline for requiring a passport to enter the US from the Canadian border (I live within 45 minutes of the border, and pass through the Champlain border a few times a year).
The last time I came through, I had gone up to Montreal to see Radiohead, sometime in July. Coming back, the border guard asked to see our passports, and we responded that we didn't think it was currently required in order to gain entry in the states (none of us had one, only drivers licenses). The guard sarcastically responded, "Oh, well, maybe you've heard of this thing, its called 9/11." He then handed us a pamphlet detailing the border regulations, and questioned us for about 5 minutes before letting us past.
So, we were able to get back in sans passports, without too much difficulty. Funny thing is, I was reading the pamphlet as we were driving down the interstate back home, and it didn't say anything about a passport being required.

These laws don't prevent YOU from smoking and killing yourself, they only prevent you from doing so IN (generally enclosed) public places and forcing (unfiltered!) carcinogens on everyone ELSE.
Unfortunately, our politicians have a pretty bad track record when it comes to siding with special interests/lobbyists/corporations over the private individual. The interests of our public are fleeting and fickle.
Yep. I can't help but feel we're entering an age of total surveillance. Both major contenders for US President voted in favor of FISA legislation - it's just one step in the incremental process of the decimation of individual privacy.
It was only the "left wing liberals" who stirred up much of a fuss over this, and everyone knows that they're nutjobs anyway. The majority of the American populace is uneducated or uninterested in these issues, and they're happy to sit idly by while their freedom erodes before their eyes!
You're referring to the Active Denial System. I remember watching that CBS special, and being disappointed with their conclusion: It's a shame that non-lethal weapons are harder to get approved than their lethal counterparts, for civilian use anyway.
I agree. Speaker for the dead made me think the series had some potential, but xenocide was a complete waste of time and I barely finished it. Having seen Card ruin that branch of the series, I don't see myself reading any of his other novels.
At times in her speech last night, I thought for sure she was going to announce an independent bid. Her rhetoric did imply that she would do what's best for her party, though she still seems to be pushing her claim that she is the stronger candidate...
I think ultimately, she's looking to muscle her way into the VP slot though. Party elders and more than half the party wouldn't forgive her for dooming the election when there's so much at stake..
"There is academic research that shows file sharing is a good thing for artists and not necessarily bad," said Merrill. "We should do a bunch of experiments to find out what the business model is."
Yes, they should run a bunch of experiments! Perhaps, they could even hire trent reznor and radiohead as outside consultants.
Anyone can run as an independent candidate, but the purpose of a primary is to gain traction for the party nomination. Without affiliation with a political party, there's no need for a nomination - and there's still a year to go before the actual election.
I call the big one "bitey"
Nice! Not only will i not fry my work laptop, now I can alt-tab out in time when the boss walks by!
I'm not your buddy, guy!

Uhhm.... What?
So did you become an aerospace engineer?

Music match was a bloated piece of shit 4 years ago - I'd hate to see what new "features" were added in that time period!
