  3. MS Office scroll lock peeve on What's A 'Scroll Lock' And Why Is It On My Keyboard? · · Score: 3, Interesting

It's always bugged me that Scroll Lock doesn't work in MS Word or in Visual Studio. (I know, I know.)

I'll be reading a document using the scroll wheel on my mouse, get tired of that particular method then switch to using the arrow key, which then jumps the view to the current cursor position, which is by now miles away from where I was reading.

Not exactly sure I'd remember to turn on Scroll Lock in the first place, but for read-only documents it might be a good default.

What if the only plug-in that was allowed was a TCL/TK interpreter? That's what Doyle's pet language is. I think he has a book published on it. Besides, the only other product that Eolas has ever marketed was a half-assed TCL/TK IDE.

At one point (not sure if still true) there were two Eolas companies in Chicago. (Both owned by Doyle) One was the company (Eolas.net) that held the patent. The other (Eolas.com) that was a TCL programming shop of about 5 people.

Every once in a while, though, they're right. Three years ago, I was having intermittent problems with my cable modem.

Call up tech support. One of the things she asks: "is the modem plugged into a surge supressor?"
    Me: "of course."
Tech:"Unplug, and plug directly in wall."
Me (dripping in sarcasm) "Oh, I'm sure that's the problem."
So, to humor her, I move a bunch of furniture (disconnecting the phone in the process). Low and behold, the sumbitch is fixed.

Now, previously I'd been rebooting by unplugging the adaptor from the back of the modem, so it wasn't a simple power cycle. Can anyone explain why this fixed it, or did she just get lucky?

I'm guessing the studios don't like the idea of this anymore than Internet content providers liked "framing" of their content inside others ads.

Actually, IBM wasn't the first to trademark the circle e symbol. They purchased the rights from eolas a small start-up in Chicago. eolas continues to use the symbol, and I'm guessing that the royalties from IBM are what keeps the company going. You may recall eolas is the company that claims patent rights on any executable started from a web page.
