  3. writing robust documents on Easing Compatibility Between OpenOffice, MS Office · · Score: 1

Not many people know how to write documents that survive re-paginations (eg, changing margins, paper size, moving from portrait to landscape), exporting to another format, etc. I still wonder if those who attended basic wordprocessor courses are being taught to use the right feature to achieve what was desired.

I used WordPerfect 5.1 long ago and it has trained me well on using the correct code (seen under reveal code) or features for the things I want. Like using Indent at the beginning of a paragragh (for indenting a paragraph), rather than using multiple [Tabs] at the beginning of all lines in a paragraph. Or, a Hard Page Break (still rememver it's Ctrl-Enter) to force a new page rather than multiple Hard Returns (to create empty lines to push text down the next page).

Once a person learns to use the correct feature, his document is definitely more robust and can withstand major reformatting.

  6. Know your enemy on Hilf Speaks About Linux Through Microsoft Eyes · · Score: 1

Well, there's this chinese saying (literally) "know yourself, know your enemy, win all the battles you fight". So, what MS is really doing is nothing new.

I think Linux has no problems penetrating further in the server space. However, Windows is slowly becoming like Unix, what with better command shells, scripts, use of XML as config for IIS. Maybe one day, the whole registry is one big XML file.

On the other hand, as a end-user workstation, Linux really needs something, to the extent of an Aqua-equivalent, a very consistent, across-the-board graphical interface. Current KDE or Gnome desktops still falls short. (Yeah, I know there are many different distributions, and that's the whole point of open source and Linux. But better consistency is needed for mass adoption. How about, as a start, a common menu structure across different distributions?)

Well, to me, there is nothing new MS has done this year. Nothing innovative. Resurrection of IE with tabs? Folding RSS into Windows/IE? Windows Live? I don't know. Is it yet another portal?
