I had the effect too. I am quite sure it was because of Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta, or (not as likely) because of Norton Internet Security 2004. After two failed installations (I removed VMWare, Inc. registry tree from HKLM_something/Software/VMWare, Inc.) I finally disabled MS AntiSpyware and Norton. One reboot later I got VMWare working, however I coulnd't get MS AntiSpyware to work on my machine.
Maybe I will have to Remove MS AntiSpyware, remove some its's leftover registry keys and it's leftover configuration files, and reinstall to get it work right. That will be the project for later days...
Anyways, when you install VMWare or similar software that makes/modifies Network Adapters, you can be sure that all AntiSpyware, AntiVirus and Internet Security programs try to make it as hard as they can.
Big companies have resources to dominate, as they can easily squash competing small companies. For this I have one term: economies of scale.
However small companies have good competition with smaller and local markets, as they often are able to better respond to small and/or more specific needs.
Yes credit history is available, but notice that not your the whole credit card account information including transactions is not. I believe this was the point of previous poster.
Welcome to the representative democracy. I don't believe that concensus of the people of California could make any better legislation. I may be wrong though.

It's 2004 and you're still writing checks. At least in Finland we got rid of that by late 80's. Not that our taxes are nice, actually they're quite high.
IANAL, but would like to answer your question:
my question is how is it a crime to allow people to download?
That is called copyright infringement, you are not authorized to distribute copyrighted material you do not own, or have license to distribute. There are exceptions to this, you could copy material for close circle of friends, etc.
This is pretty certain a quote from Ed Foster's Gripelog:
My Norton Antivirus 2002 that came with my Compaq Presario expired recently. I was not in a position to renew the LiveUpdate contract at the moment. Every day, NAV would pop up a box "Your subscription is expired" with a "remind me in X days" box... and the box has only one option: one day. So every day it reminds me. I e-mailed Norton to ask how to turn off the reminder, or at least have it only do it once a week or so. Their answer? Impossible. The only thing you can do is either renew or uninstall. Sure, keeping current on virus definitions is important, but if I'm willing to take a chance, it should be my right to do so without being pestered daily, don't you think? They spin it as "protecting you" but it comes across as a combination of CYA (as in their "A") and marketing bordering on spam.
...Simply uninstall your Norton products (all of them), reboot, uninstall LiveReg and LiveUpdate from add/remove programs, reboot.
Then remove all directories named "Symantec" or "Norton" from your hard disk, especially the ones under C:\Windows\Application Data and C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data (Win 9x), or C:\Documents and Setting\*\Application Data (Win XP).
Then simply re-install your Norton product and you now have 1 year of nag-free virus protection.
To be fair (and legal) to Symantec, however, you should turn off your automatic virus updates once you've brought them up-to-date.
Coincidentally, this is the same method Symantec advises to cure many, many otherwise unfixable bugs with their products.
Legos gone bad these days. You just can't get legos from my childhood anymore, some 19 years ago legos rocked. Now, they are just specialty pieces that don't really fit any but one construction.
Considering MS has affects its competitors too. I think that some kind of _retalliation_ might be good for the industry as whole. --
when everyone gives everything,
I use flixging windows 98 for playing games, linux is not the platform to play games on.
And IMHO X servers (at least 3.3.x and 4.x of XFree86 series) suck at multimedia. Yeah. Try to play DVD-movie or decent mpeg2 video with audio on any *nix or *nix-like system.

when everyone gives everything,
A lot of news these days is what I'd call social porn. Lots of the worst kind just portray horrible events, without explaining the world behind these activities.
Is it just me, or do other people loath to see people drowning in tv. It is nice to have cameras, but do you have to shoot everything with them?
And when people have the horrible events on tapes, they are just shown in telly, with no background information (history) of what-so-ever.
If you work at a company that's abusing you, it isn't their fault for doing it, it's your fault for letting them.
So. If people do bad things to you it is basically your fault, because you didn't shoot them when they started doing those bad things?
I sense wrong values here. Even though I agree to some extent that at least some people can choose where they work at. Sometimes there isn't as much choise just because of families, or some other reasons.

when everyone gives everything,
Now that is an concept I really am not able to grasp. How on earth someone is responsible for anothers actions, if the another [person] has decided he will do something illegal?
Now if someone decides that he will do something illegal, there might be no stopping him from doing it. --
when everyone gives everything,
How do you think that [anyone] getting gang-raped is going to help anyone else, or even the person getting gang-raped?
Shame on you. Making people go to jail doesn't make the problem go away. Death penalties don't actually make less people murderers, they do infact make the problem worse in a way. --

The plane without the software should be a lot cheaper too.

You yourself have assosiated monopoly with monopolies via legistlation. However there are other kinds of monopolies too.
Maybe you should try a later version of Mozilla. You know the older ones have bugs that are fixed in later ones.

In most societies you are able to limit yourself with many agreements/contracts if you like that. Rightly so in the land of the free too.
So we have operators that don't sell phones. And phone dealers.
However TiVo/Replay thing wouldn't be unthinkable here. Consumers couldn't care less (as with DVD Region Code), but some others (including me) would.
Blah.
I am proud to be a pHinn...

We all have our share of rotten apples (politicians), you know.
